giving storytransforming treasures

In January of 2019, The Salvation Army in Texas City moved its Social Service operation from the temporary trailer that it had been in since the fires of 2012 to its new home at 4801 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway. Renovation of the building was in the future plan, but it was always assumed that Social Services would be able to continue operating in one portion of the facility while renovation was done in other parts.

When meetings with Kelso Construction began in preparation to start renovations, construction manager Lee Hughes made it clear that insurance and logistics would not allow The Salvation Army to operate on the property for the 6-8 months of the project. The desire to stay on the Mainland rather than utilize office space at the Galveston Corps was strong, but it was not feasible to incur cost for another office. A call for help went out to various groups of supporters and was answered by Women’s Auxiliary President Terri Cole. Terri approached Larry Neuhaus of Neuhaus Investment Company which owns an office building at 600 Gulf Freeway in Texas City and told him that The Salvation Army needed help. He did not hesitate to offer an office free of charge for Social Services to work out of during the period of renovation. The Salvation Army wishes to express great thanks to Mr. Neuhaus for this amazing gift and to Terri Cole for reaching out. Says Terri, “My motto is, it never hurts to ask!”

The Salvation Army Family Store, located at 601 51st Street in Galveston, is a top-notch resale store that serves as a source of funding for the local emergency shelter. Because it relies on donations from the public for its inventory, it should not be surprising that the unique and generous community of Galveston County provides some unusual and valuable items. Recently, the Family Store received a specially commissioned, one-of-a-kind art deco dining table. Every one of the six chairs contained its own different piece of art. Store Manager, Michelle Kilpatrick, knew she had something special. She has developed relationships with a number of art and furniture experts in the community who regularly shop in the store looking for special items, and she consulted with them to place a fair value on the dining set. She set a price of $1200 and waited for the right buyer to recognize the deal he or she was getting on this priceless piece of functional art. Many tried to talk her out of it, but she held tight until the day her special buyer walked in and fell in love. That $1200 can provide 160 nights of shelter or 600 meals to people experiencing homelessness. Or it can send five children to camp for a week. It’s a huge impact that started with one person changing the décor in his home.

The Family Store is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Donations are accepted until 5:00 pm at the rear loading dock behind the store. The Family Store carries quality clothing for the whole family, furniture, household goods and many other items. Currently Christmas in July items are 50% off. Check in often for changing weekly specials and for that one-of-a-kind item that can change a life if you take it home.

The Time to Prepare is Now!Texas Guard

Emergency Disaster Services staff and volunteers from The Salvation Army Galveston County participated in the Texas State Guard hurricane evacuation drill in June. This event simulates a disaster response effort and agencies practice in real-time preparing their personnel to receive, shelter and provide care to area residents in the event of severe weather evacuations. The airlift exercise participants included the Texas Department of Emergency Management, the Texas Military Department, the Texas State Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. The Salvation Army prepared and served meals to the exercise participants, one of the primary functions during any disaster response.

Jimmy Stanford, Texas Divisional Emergency Services Manager said, “This event provides The Salvation Army disaster response teams a chance to practice our support services alongside the first responders in a realistic environment. Collaboration between multiple agencies is crucial to the success of any disaster response and training events of this kind enhance the ability of our teams across the state to effectively respond, as and when we are needed.” To serve as an Emergency Disaster Service volunteer, visit Disaster.SalvationArmyUSA.org.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services in Texas continues to prepare for the 2019 hurricane season which runs from June 1 through November 30. The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season defied predictions of a relatively quiet season by producing 15 named storms, eight hurricanes and two major hurricanes – making it the third consecutive year of above-average activity. The 2019 hurricane season has been predicted to be “near normal” by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with nine to 15 named storms expected to form, and between two and four major hurricanes expected.

Salvation Army EDS teams throughout Texas stand prepared and ready to respond once again. Statewide, the organization operates a fleet of 32 mobile kitchens, six rapid response vehicles, two field kitchens with the combined capacity to produce 25,000 meals per day, a shower unit, one communications unit, and a command unit. “One of the strengths of The Salvation Army EDS structure is that it is rapidly scalable in times of disaster,” said Alvin Migues, EDS Director for The Salvation Army, Texas Division. “Our mobile kitchens are assigned to Salvation Army units around the state and can be mobilized very quickly to respond to an event. Additionally, The Salvation Army has its own disaster training curriculum and we have fully trained teams ready to deploy literally at a moment’s notice.”

Volunteer recruitment is ongoing. There is a canteen stationed in Galveston County for use by teams of trained volunteers to use for providing food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to survivors and first responders during local events in addition to large-scale disaster. Training starts by creating a volunteer profile at disaster.salvationarmyusa.org and completing the online video course Introduction to Emergency Disaster Services. Additional requirements include a personal interview, completion of Safe From Harm training and a background check. Those interested in driving the canteen must have a clear driving record and be on The Salvation Army’s approved drivers list. For more information, contact Holly McDonald at (409) 763-1691, ext. 75313 or [email protected].

The first disaster response by The Salvation Army took place in 1900 when a devastating hurricane destroyed Galveston, Texas, killing more than 5,000 people. The devastation was so significant that the National Commander at the time, Frederick Booth-Tucker, ordered Salvation Army Officers from across the country to proceed to the disaster site to provide spiritual and practical assistance.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas coastline on the evening of August 24, 2017, prompting the largest Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) relief efforts seen since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Salvation Army EDS teams responded immediately providing food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to survivors and first responders. At the peak of service 103 Salvation Army mobile feeding units were working in affected areas delivering more than 950,000 meals, 33,000 food boxes, 92,000 comfort kits and 15,000 cleanup kits in the months that followed.

If you want to be ready to help, now is the time to prepare.

Summer is a time for fun in the sun and vacations with family and friends. Summer is also a time of great need for The Salvation Army in Galveston County. As temperatures rise, the need for our services oftentimes rises as well, which means we need our community more now than ever. In each newsletter we publish, we will include current fundraising needs in this column to make you aware of those needs in case you’re able to help donate financially, in-kind, or facilitate some relationship building with someone in the community that could help us with the needs most pressing at the time. In addition to our ongoing need for operational funding for our shelter, feeding program, rental assistance, and utility assistance provided to those in need, below you will find a list of our most pressing needs at the time.

($50,000) – Our Family Store operates to help us generate more revenue for our programs to feed, shelter, and offer hope to those who need it most in our community. A functional box truck is essen-tial to our Family Store operations to ensure we can pick up large items and deliver them to our store. Our current truck is well past its mileage. A new truck will be our “billboard on wheels” as it moves around town, advertising our organization as well as any corporate sponsor that would like to grant us funds to purchase this vehicle. A new truck will allow dependable transportation for our Family Store operations, which changes lives in our community.

($6,000-9,000) – In order to be wise stewards of donor funds, we have a need for a commercial lawn mower. We maintain a lot of property in Tex-as City and Galveston and the mower that we use currently was not made for that type of service, leading to many costly repairs and extra staff time due to insufficient blade lengths. A commercial mower is an investment for the future.

($500-$750) – We are currently in need of a pro-fessional camera to use for our social media posts for the Family Store as well as any public relations and special events that take place at The Salvation Army in Galveston County. This equipment will al-low us to better tell our story and share the many successes we have throughout the year with our community.
