    RED HEART Soft Baby Steps:Cardigan: 1 (2, 2,

    3) balls 9800 Baby Blue A. Hat: 1 ball each 9800 Baby

    Blue A and 9935 Blue Earth B.

    Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7] and 5mm [US 8].

    Circular Knitting Needles: 4.5mm [US 7] and 5mm

    [US 8] 29.

    4 (5, 5, 6) Buttons diameter, 2 stitch holders, yarn

    needle, pompom maker.

    GAUGE: 18 sts = 4; 24 rows = 4 in St st with largerneedles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles

    to obtain the gauge.

    Special Abbreviations:

    ssk (slip, slip, knit) = Slip next 2 sts knitwise, one at a

    time, to right needle; insert point of left needle into the

    fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together from this

    position.

    K2tog = knit the next two sts together.

    NOTES

    Cardigan is worked back and forth in rows. Circular

    needles are used to accommodate large number ofstitches. Cardigan body is worked in one piece to the

    armholes, then divided to complete fronts and back

    separately.

    CARDIGAN

    Body

    With smaller needles and A, cast on 104 (108, 112, 124)

    sts. Work in Garter st (K every row) for 1. Change to

    larger needles and St st, begin K row, until 5 (6, 7,

    8) from beginning, end P row.

    Divide for Fronts and BackK26 (27, 28, 31) sts and place on st holder for Right Fron

    K52 (54, 56, 62) sts for Back; place remaining 26 (27, 28

    31) sts on st holder for Left Front.

    Back

    Next Row: P52 (54, 56, 62).

    Shape Armholes

    Bind off 5 (4, 4, 6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows42

    (46, 48, 50) sts. Work even until 9 (11, 12, 14) from

    beginning, end P row. Bind off.

    Right Front-Shape Armhole

    With wrong side facing, slip sts for Right Front from holde

    onto needle and attach yarn.

    Bind off 5 (4, 4, 6) sts at beginning of row, P to end21 (2

    24, 25) sts. Work even until 7 (9, 10, 12) from beginnin

    Shape Front Neck

    ** Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next row. Bind off at neck

    edge 3 sts once, then 2 sts 0 (0, 1, 1) time15 (17, 16, 17)

    sts. ** Purl 1 row even.

    Next Row: K1, ssk, K to end.

    Next Row: Purl.Repeat last 2 rows 2 (2, 1, 1) more times12 (14, 14, 15)

    sts. Work even until piece measures same as Back, end P

    row. Bind off.

    Left Front-Shape Armhole

    With right side facing, slip sts for Left Front from holder

    onto needle and attach yarn.

    Bind off 5 (4, 4, 6) sts at beginning of row, K to end21 (23,

    24, 25) sts. Work even until 7 (9, 10, 12) from beginning,

    end K row.

    Shape Front Neck

    Work same as for Right Front from ** to **.Next Row: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

    Next Row: Purl.

    Repeat last 2 rows 2 (2, 1, 1) more times12 (14, 14, 15)

    sts. Work even until piece measures same as Back, end P

    row. Bind off.

    Sleeves

    With smaller needles and A, cast on 25 (29, 31, 33) sts.

    Work in Garter st for 1. Change to larger needles and

    St st, begin P row, shaping sides by inc 1 st each end of

    every K row 2 (0, 0, 0) times, then every 4th row 5 (3, 2, 0)

    times, then every 6th row 0 (3, 5, 2) times, then every 8th

    row 0 (0, 0, 6) times39 (41, 45, 49) sts. Work even until 7(8, 9, 13) from beginning, end P row. Bind off.

    FINISHING

    Neckband

    Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing, smaller

    needles and A, pick up and K43 (43, 45, 45) sts evenly

    around neck edge. Work in Garter st for 1. Bind off

    loosely.

    Button band

    With right side facing, smaller needles and A, pick up and

    K40 (47, 51, 61) sts evenly along right front edge including

    neckband. Work in Garter st for 1. Bind off loosely.

    Buttonhole Band

    Place markers for 4 (5, 5, 6) buttonholes evenly spaced

    along left front, with rst and last from top and bottom

    edges of cardigan. Work same as for button band along

    left front edge, until band measures .

    Buttonhole Row: [K to marker, yo, K2tog] 4 (5, 5, 6)

    times, K to end.

    Work even until band measures 1. Bind off loosely.

    Sew buttons to button band to correspond to buttonholes

    HAT

    Earfaps (Make 2)

    With larger needles and B cast on 6 (7, 9) sts. P 1 row.

    Working in St st, shape sides by inc 1 st each end of

    next (K) row, then every K row 3 more times14 (15, 17)

    sts. Work even until earap measures 1 (2, 2) from

    beginning, end P row. Place sts on stitch holder.

    Main Hat

    With larger needles and B, cast on 10 (11, 11) sts, with

    right side facing K across 14 (15, 17) sts of rst earap,

    cast on 25 (28, 29) sts, K across 14 (15, 17) sts of secon

    earap, cast on 9 (11, 11) sts72 (80, 85) sts. Work evenfor 2 (3, 3), end P row.

    Shape Crown

    Row 1: K7 (6, 10), K2tog, [K6 (9, 10), K2tog] 7 (6, 6)

    For All Sizes

    Cut yarn leaving long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts

    and pull tightly, fasten securely.

    FINISHING

    With right side facing, smaller needles and A, pick upand K82 (91, 96) sts evenly around edge of hat including

    earaps. Knit 2 rows. Bind off. Sew back seam. Weave in

    all yarn ends.

    Twisted Cord Ties: Cut 2 strands ofA, each 31 in length.

    Bring the cut ends together and tie a knot close to the

    ends forming a large loop. Secure the knotted end to a

    stable surface or have a friend hold the end. Slip a pencil

    into the loop and hold the yarn just below the loop and

    the pencil. Holding the yarn taut, twirl the pencil, thereby

    twisting the yarn, until the entire length is tightly twisted

    and begins to twist back upon itself. Bring the loop end

    and the knotted end together. Tie with an overhand knot.Trim the ends. Smooth out the kinks so that the cord lies

    at and is evenly twisted along its length. Attach to wrong

    side of each earap.

    Pompom

    With A, make one 1 pompom (or desired size). Attach to

    top of hat.
