PEP-II

• Peak Luminosity– Run 5 record is 8.5*10**33 (was 9.2 in May

2004)– Rather smooth running (when trees don’t fall)

• Carnet des doleances– RF relialibility– Klystrons (no spare!)– Beam Position Monitors heating problem LER bunch lenght affected Plan for repair in Fall 2006

• October short down– PPS certification (Linac and Pep-II)– Replacement of Q5L vacuum chamber– DCH readout board replacement

Page 5: Babar: Stato e Prospettive

PEP-II Run Schedule 2005-08

• Collide steadily from April 2005 through July 2006 with a “one month break” in October 2005. (Present: October 3 through November 4, 2005)

• 2006 Down is August through November for BaBar, PEP-II, and LCLS upgrade work.

• Three month down in Summer-Fall 2007 for LCLS work.

• Collide through September 2008.

DCH electronics upgrade

• Motivation: – Reduce deadtime due to

serialization and shipping of data from DIOM to ROM

• Upgrade in two steps:– Phase 1 (summer 2004)

• Ship only 1/2 waveform information (3216 bytes) from frontends

• No change observed with data– Phase 2 (Oct 2005)

• Larger FPGA for feature extraction before transmission hardware change

• New boards in production

Come stiamo con la produzione di Fisica?

• A few comments from the Summer Conferences 2005– Even without new data (<17 fb-1 from Run 5 by July 1):

65 conference papers to LP05! More new results for EPS.• New channels added to high profile results

– KsKsKs( with one Ks->pi0pi0)00

• Much progress of Vub and inclusive b -> s spectrum• Discovery of a new & unusual heavy state at 4.260

GeV/c2 in ISR events• Expectations for Summer 2006

– Summer 2006 data samples will be comparable with Belle, given the long continuous run & luminosity improvements planned

• BABAR results for Penguin modes should be better than Belle (comparable if Belle analysis improved)

Page 16: Babar: Stato e Prospettive

Physics goals & expectations• Goal for 2005-2006: double current data set

– Delay in Run 5 can be overcome by summer 2006 with extended running period, with substantial reduction in errors on CP violation asymmetries in rare decay modes

– Error on average of Penguin modes should reach 0.06

• Goal for 2007-2008: double again to ~1 ab-1

– Individual Penguin modes with errors in range 0.06-0.12

– Suite of fundamental Standard Model measurements with substantially improved levels of precisionSensitivity to New Physics through rare decays,

CP violation and large data sample

Projected Uncertainties of UT Parameters

(two B-factories with comparable lumi )

-LHCb will need to run three years (design lumi) to achieve the 2008 precision-No future experiment will be able to measure Vub with comparable precision-For several NP models the deviations of the CP violation in b-> s penguin modes can be 20%.

Current planning calls for PEP-II to be operated until the end of FY2008 at the latest, and the Tevatron collider to be operated until

the end of FY2009. What factors or considerations might lead to stopping B Factory operations one year, or two years earlier than

planned? When would we be in a position to make such a determination and what information would be needed?

Conclusioni• Run 5 iniziato, stiamo accumulando

The missing channels

At one year from the installation 5 wires over 1552 are in a hospital PS at lower voltage.

Few other HV channel are connected in the hospital PS (no loss of efficiency).

The problem of the hospitalized channels can be in the HV distribution (cables, capacitors), indeed all the plateau are good: this can be investigated during the October shutdown.

Challenges of B Factory Restart

• Jan 21: Re-Start Plan for B Factory submitted for validation review

• Feb 24: Restart Validation Team recommends restart of B Factory complex– BABAR pre-restart conditions:

• Complete labeling of breaker panels required for startup

• Correct items from walkthrough list• Complete VESDA changes for BABAR

• Mar 24: Pre-restart items signed off and authorization to restart given

• Apr 15: First collisions in PEP-II for Run 5– Fast start interrupted by power failure, vacuum leak, and

difficulties passing 7x1033 peak luminosity so far
