Messier-Bugatti-Dowty opens new production unit in Canada’s Mirabel

Messier-Bugatti-Dowty (Safran), inaugurated the company’s new landing gear production facility at its plant in Mirabel, near Montréal. The inauguration represents the culmination of more than a year of construction, and to-tal investments of C$58m. The company has received significant support from the Quebec government for its expansion and moderniza-tion program, through the Quebec Ministry of Finance and the Economy and from Inves-

tissement Québec, which allocated a non-refundable grant of C$7.4m. The Canadian government, via Canada Economic Develop-ment, granted an interest-free C$3m loan. The progressive increase in production rates has brought impetus to significant investments within the plant. Two new machining lines are now being installed, along with major indus-trial machinery and equipment, including nu-merical control (NC) machine tools and systems for special processes. According to Stéphane Salvignol, general manager of the Mirabel plant, “We supply structural landing gear parts for the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350, as well as for the Airbus A320, A330 and A380. This expansion has become necessary to meet the growing needs of our customers.”

B/E Aerospace posts first quarter 2013 results

B/E Aerospace announced first quarter 2013 financial results. First quarter 2013 revenues of $842.2m increased $94.9m, or 12.7%, as compared with the prior year period. First quarter 2013 operating earnings were $153.6m, an increase of 18.3%, and oper-ating margin of 18.2% increased 80 basis points as compared to the prior year period. The growth in operating earnings and the improvement in operating margin occurred primarily as a result of operating leverage at the higher revenue level and ongoing operational efficiency initiatives. Operat-ing earnings and operating margin, both adjusted to exclude acquisition, integration and transition (AIT) costs, were $157.7m and 18.7%. First quarter 2013 net earnings were $89.9m, an increases of 30.7% as compared with the prior year period.

MTU Aero Engines’ revenues up 35% in first quarter

MTU Aero Engines Holding AG started the financial year 2013 with a 35% surge in rev-enues, which amounted to €944.7m in the first quarter 2013, compared with €698.0m in the first quarter 2012. The group generated an operating profit of €89.3m (1-3/12: €91.4m), which corresponds to an EBIT margin of 9.5%. Earnings after tax amounted to €54.5m, compared with €56.9m in the first three months of 2012. The rise in first-quarter revenues is mainly attributable to strong growth in the commercial engine business, where revenues increased by 65% from €296.8m to €488.4m. The key revenue drivers in the commercial engine business, including spare parts sales, were the V2500 engine for the Airbus A320 family, the PW2000 for the Boeing 757 and C-17, the GP7000 for the Airbus A380, and the GEnx that powers the Boeing 787 and 747-8. The highest growth rates were achieved for series production for the GP7000 and GEnx widebody programs. MTU’s revenues in the com-mercial maintenance business grew by 20% to €352.0m (1-3/12: €293.2m). The main source of these revenues was the V2500 engine, which powers the Airbus A320 family. MTU’s earnings in the commercial maintenance business in-creased, with adjusted EBIT rising by 20% to €29.2m (1-3/12: €24.3m). The adjusted EBIT margin remained unchanged at 8.3%. Adjusted EBIT in the OEM segment amounted to €59.1m compared with €68.8m in the first quarter of 2012. “This decline is the result of a shift in the revenue mix between series production and spare parts,” explained CFO Reiner Winkler. The adjusted EBIT margin for the OEM segment was 9.8% (1-3/12: 16.7%).

Etihad Airways and Jet Airways of India released that the UAE na-tional carrier has agreed to subscribe for 27,263,372 new shares in Jet Airways at a price of INR754.74 per share. The value of this equity investment is $379m and will result in Etihad Airways hold-ing 24% of the enlarged share capital of Jet Airways.

Etihad Airways’ wider overall commitment to Jet Airways includes the injection of $220m to create and strengthen a wide-ranging partnership between the two carriers. As part of this Etihad Air-ways paid $70m to purchase Jet Airways’ three pairs of Heathrow slots through the sale and lease back agreement announced on 27 February 2013. Jet Airways continues to operate flights to Lon-don utilising these slots. An amount of $150m will be invested by Etihad Airways by way of a majority equity investment in Jet Airways’ frequent flyer pro-gram “Jet Privilege”, subject to appropriate regulatory and corporate approvals and final commercial agreements which are expected to be completed within the next six months.

Under the strategic partnership, which will be subject to full regulatory and shareholder ap-proval, the airlines will gradually expand existing operations and introduce new routes between India and Abu Dhabi, providing an ever wider choice to the trav-

elling public. They will combine their network of 140 destinations, with Jet Airways establishing a Gulf gateway in Abu Dhabi and ex-panding its reach through Etihad Airways’ growing global network.

In other news, Etihad president and CEO James Hogan spoke last week at the Airneth Lecture in Amsterdam about the surge of ‘evolv-ing economies’ on the global air travel map, which, he said, is being “redrawn as growth rates slow in traditional markets and surge in evolving economies including India, Africa and Latin America`’.

He went on to say that “legacy markets are growing, but at a slower pace. Emerging markets are surging. Traffic patterns and demographics are changing. Traditional air transport hubs are declining in prominence, with growth constrained by inadequate

infrastructure and ingrained political resistance to change.

“The Arabian Gulf – the geographic centre of the world – is now evolving as the globalcentre of the air transport industry, with the number of passengers passing through Gulf hubs outstripping industry growth rates.”

The airline industry was, he said, en-tering a new phase of consolidation, as no “single carrier could satisfy the global growth in passenger traffic. He said a new hybrid business model was emerging, in which minority equity al-

liances were bridging the gap between full mergers and legacy alliances”.

Etihad Airways and Air Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a commercial cooperation agreement that will enhance travel services between the United Arab Emirates and Canada. While the two carriers currently have interline agreements in place for passenger and cargo services, Eti-

had Airways and Air Canada intend to offer customers through-checked bags, reciprocal codeshare services and frequent flyer ben-efits. The MoU provides for reciprocal code-share services to Etihad’s Abu Dhabi hub and select points in North America served by Air Canada via its Toronto hub. The two parties have commenced discussions to finalize de-tails with the objective of introducing code-share services in the third quarter 2013.
