Why deploy WTX as a single transformation solution?1. Reusability

Reusability is at the heart of the benefits of SOA, and transformation is one of the most commonly invoked services. – WTX enables organisations to leverage and benefit from this reusability, rather than

incurring the costs and delays caused by using multiple transformation tools.

WebSphere Transformation Extender provides reusability of:– Artifacts - maps can be built once and deployed in many places.

• Same map that runs on a DataPower device could also run on WebSphere Message Broker, Sterling B2B Integrator or from JCL on a mainframe.

– WTX’s Type Trees are also highly reusable artifacts• Imposes a consistent shape and pattern for any data going through the

integration architecture. – Skills - developers can learn a single tool that can be applied in every situation rather

than having to maintain fluency with multiple different tools.


Why deploy WTX as a single transformation solution?2. Extend the utility of an integration platform.

WTX can add capability to an existing integration architecture:– Extends the range of an ESB (i.e. WMB, WESB)

• Include the data structures defined in WTX industry packs.• Eliminates the need to have a B2B gateway involved in internal transactions that

happen to include industry data.– Supports non-XML data

• In the case of WESB and WDP, there is no native capability to accept data in any form other than XML. WTX extends the range of WESB to be able to parse and process any kind of data.

– In the case of SBI, it has no metadata for HL7 -- an important world-wide data standard.


Why deploy WTX as a single transformation solution?3. Efficient division of labor

Every customer has an existing technical and political infrastructure that influences where certain tasks are performed and who performs them.

With the majority of IBM integration solutions (e.g. WMB, WESB, WDP) --transformations must be developed by integration developers because the tooling for transformation can not be divorced from the more general integration tooling.

WTX offers customers a chance to delegate transformation to people who are closer to the lines of business. – While we do not market WTX as a business analysts' tool, it should be clear that the

skill level required is much less than would be required by any other mapping technology we offer.

– It is therefore very accessible to a "technical analyst" -- i.e. someone who works for the line of business, but who has had some prior experience with some kind of declarative development tooling.

Ultimately, this translates into faster time to market because friction points between the line of business and the development organization are minimzed or eliminated.

WebSphere Transformation Extender has been developed and enhanced using the principle that it should not be necessary to resort to a scripting language to get passed the hard parts of a transformation requirement. – Everything in a WebSphere Transformation Extender map is defined in the graphical

tooling. – This results in a lower up front development cost, however the real value comes in

decreased maintenance costs.

Decreased Maintenance Costs:– There is no (hidden) code to sort through. There are no global variables whose value

could be changed by subroutines. The range of stylistic variances that can impede the understanding of function are significantly reduced.

– If you want to know why you're getting a bad result at a certain spot in the output data, there will always be one and only one place in the map where that can be happening, the rule that is assigned to that data object.
