HOUSING NEWSInge Shurmer of Gutheridge Crescent housing officehas been out and about on the ‘Looking out for youVisits’ and about the new tenant visits. I have found that the chanceto go out and meet some of the tenants has beeninvaluable, just being on the end of the phone doesn’treally give you an incite into how people are reallyliving and coping. It helps them to know who they canturn to and it helps us to understand more. If you oranyone you know could do with either some advice orsome befriending, then call in or phone us. Thenumber will be in your pack. Tel. 252 7007Inge also told us about the Choice based letting'sscheme which was launched on 20th April. “You willnow need to register, get a password and to bid in to aproperty which suits your needs” “you will either needto go online to our new web site or you can visit ourletting's shop to have a look at what is available forrent.” this is not a new idea as there have been somehousing associations using this method before, itworks though, so we did lots of consultation and weare now up and running with it. Thanks to referrals from b-working andothers we’ve had over thirty people contact us and we are supporting a dozen potential new businesses.”

Barbara added, “We have organised individual help, group training sessions and haveexperienced business people providing mentoring and advice.” Sam and Barbara said thatthrough Enterprise for a Life people are getting a good start in operating sustainable

businesses. They cited three examples businesses that intend to offer services in Braunstone. We told you in a previous edition about resident, Janine Hough’s ambition to start a Reflexology business. She toldus, “I’ve now got a base to work out of. It’s in Angel Sourced Holistics on Hinckley Road. I’m working hard to getpeople in and I’m doing voluntary sessions. It’s a good start... it keeps me focused and enthusiastic. Through Samand Barbara I’ve learned about pricing and promotion and I’m getting help from a business mentor, Marian, who isexperienced in running a reflexology business. T he message this summer is be Green - be Clean. Looking after the Braunstone environment is a big dealfor the Clean Up Braunstone team. Never ones to settle, the team has already planned a year of cleaningand their next big target is the Clean Up for Summer 2010.

The clean up team is made up of local residents from theNeighbourhood Management Board and workers such as parks, police, housing, councillors and b-inspired. They have looked at thesuggestions from residents, and have come up with some plans forthe coming season! Many residents have reported Bendbow Spinney an eyesore and theteam found out that the council are working with Riverside Collegeto restore the site.In the six streets area, particularly the jittys and the pocket park are

of concern too. We found out that Leicester Housing Association haveplans to get a graffiti project under way, hoping to make the area nicerand the jittys are already being targeted by council workers, cutting backthe weeds and clearing out the litter. There are some planters on the bottom of Hockley Farm Road, next toMeadwell Road, and these need clearing out. The council will be askingthe probation service to clear these out and b-inspired have organisedfor some trees to be planted in this area. There is an ongoing debate about what to do about the underpasses on

Bendbow Rise and Gallards Hill. Councillor Cooke is going to liase with Highways and theclean up group have offered to help with the clearing up.

After the success of last years Big Clean Up, the team have organised a new date, this being Tuesday 1st June, from 10am to 1pm on Braunstone Park! Come with your wellies and help out, it’s great fun and is followed bya lunch at the stable block. For more information ring 0116 223 2256

Due to popular demand we are still promoting the message “Bin thePoo!”. One way to keep the streets and public spaces clean is to letyour dog use your garden, then you can just put it in your own bin.

When you walk your dog always carry a bag to pick up any mess. Thereare dog bins all over Braunstone so it’s easy to dispose of the bag. Youcan buy dog bags, use baby nappy sack or recycle small carrier bags youget when shopping. Reports are that more and more dogs owners do cleanup after their dogs, but we urge every dog owner to be responsible. As wecome up to the summer holidays we want the streets, parks and play areasto be clean and safe for local children. (Thanks to Andy V for the cartoon)

PLAZA PERKS PARK

Early on the the New Deal programme and through the long Sports Action Zone consultations it was clear thatBraunstone Park was important to residents, but many reported that they did not feel safe on it. It felt isolated andas one person put “there’s no-one around to help you if anything happens.”

Talking to residents, there was the feeling that if it was busier on the park then they would be more likely to use it. A fewdays after our walk saw the official opening of the ‘Pool Plaza’ in what used to be the paddling pool. Hundreds of peopleturned up at the fun packed event.During this we spoke to residents of all ages about the park and the facilities. The response was overwhelmingly positive. One woman said, “I come and sit here most days. It’s lovely watching the kids using the place, they started telling meall the skating terms... they are having fun and getting fit. I love the outdoor gym and I’ve had a go myself.” Another said,“The kids keep the skate park clean. I saw them coming to sweep it so I said they could store the brushes in my shed.”One adult skateboarder said, “This is brilliant, my mum lives just round the corner, so it convenient. It’s a good site.Sometimes people come and mess it up a bit at night but we clean it up so we can avoid people getting hurt.” Someyoung men reported that they used the gym equipment almost every day. Some people agreed that they felt safer on

the park when it is busy and they enjoyed seeing childrenbeing involved in activities.Sally Davis, is very pleased with the way the park looksand the big increase in use. “On the sports side most ofthe work is done and equipment in place. For the futurewe’ll be looking at how to help people get the best use.I think the need is to have mentors and coaches aroundto show how to use the equipment and facilities to besteffect.” We look forward to it!

CARNIVAL NUMBER TENThis year celebrates the 10th Anniversary of BraunstoneCommunity Carnival. Over the years the event hasgrown and grown now attracting over 17,000 peoplethroughout the day. The event brings the communitytogether and lots of hard work is put in by local groupsand individuals to make the event a success. This year we are working hard fundraising to enable tothe event to go ahead, we are getting great supportespecially from our local singing and dancing groups, helping out to raise funds.Angie Wright from b-inspired, the Event Manager toldus “This years Carnival theme is ‘Celebration’ and wereally intend it to be a BIG Anniversary celebration forthe event itself and many of the local groups that set-upall those years ago to bring us our colourful processionand brilliant live stage performances. I would really liketo urge people to be proud and be involved in yourCommunity Carnival.”Tracy Renshaw from Gold Events Management said “Irevived the carnival after a 20 year gap back in 2001as part of the BCA events team and I can’t believewhere the time has gone. I am thrilled to be still part of

organising the eventand want to thankeveryone who hastaken part over theyears and those whoare helping out toraise funds for thisyear’s event.”We want more groupsto take part in theprocession this year,so if you think you

COLIN CLICKS!

Many people want to learn about computers withoutformal learning. That’s why the B-connected teamand us ran Computing for the Terrified course

last year. We were happy to hear about more residentslearning about computers in a very informal, buteffective way.Calling themselves the ClickChicks, the group has beensinging the praises of thecourse at the Grove. Annsaid, “What we want is togive credit to Colin Roadnightwho helps us. He’s one ofthe best and he should berecognised for it. The wayColin is, nothing is too muchtrouble and we learn at our own pace... plus its fun.”Other Click Chicks echo Ann’s opinion. Mary said“I wanted be able to use a computer without all theformality. I don’t want to a certificate and the formalclasses. I just want use the computer and to learnat my own speed.”Colin is very happy with the way the group hasdeveloped. “The group is in its second year. The ideacame from Streetvibe and LCC .The idea was to getyoung people to help older residents to develop theircomputer skills. Jack Smith, Robert Walker and FreddieManship are the young men who regularly help out.”Other members told us that there is one phrase Colinis famous for. According to Carolyn “If you are tryingsomething and say, “I can’t do this.” Colin is straightback with “Oh yes you can!” He’s quite sneaky, henever shows you or tells you what to do. He says“What do you think you could try.” Really he’s helping

us see that we cando it.”Colin says, “There’sthings I don’t knoweither but we canall learn just by trying. My focus is oninformal educationand a positive

outlook. We’ve got hotmail and facebook accounts,Ann’s been internet shopping, Felicia’s sending emails,Clare and Carolyn are using learning programs.”While they are learning at their own pace the membersare clear that there is a specific reason for theirsuccess “It’s our Colin... he makes it easy to understandbut its also great fun... we love it!”

CARRY ON CREATING

After the overwhelming success of the “Learning fromthe Past, Building for the Future” project, and thesubsequent exhibition, what’s next for the B-Creative

team? More of the same, it would seem, as the Watercolourand History groups are continuing with the team’s support.Lisa told us, “The groups are so passionate about what theyhave been doing, theydon’t want to stop! They still meet weekly, and pay £1 eachsession to coverrefreshments, and anyfuture projects theywant to do.”In fact, the historygroup is currently working towards a smaller exhibition atthe Civic Centre in Braunstone Town, which opens on 4th

June until 7th June.Meanwhile, Lisa and Zoe will be working with children atFolville Junior School on a history project, which will alsoinvolve members of the history group in story-tellingsessions. “This is a great opportunity for the older residentsto share their knowledge with the younger generation, andget them excited about where they live.”

Do you need help Fundinga project or group? We aspire to regenerate neighbourhoods throughvibrant, sustainable initiatives that make a positiveimpact on communities.

We offer small grants of between £50 to £5,000 tosupport our local residents and communities.

Transforming

revitalising

Hi everyone it’s Dr Nana here! I hope you are

enjoying the good weather! Let’s hope it stays thatway and hope the summer is better than last year. There have been a few changes at Hockley Farmmedical practice which I’m sure some of you areaware of. We now have a new practice managerLorraine Baker and a new doctor Dr Shaista Khanand the practice would like to extend a warm welcometo them both. Today, I would like to answer somequestions relating to prescriptions. There is a lot ofconfusion with how to get prescriptions on repeat andsometime a lot of frustration from patients when aprescription is not given. I hope I can answer some ofthose questions today and make the process easy foryou.I have run out of my tablets today and need themurgently. Can I get them? The best way is to put in a repeat request early soyou do not run out. If you have run out of your tabletsand need them urgently, the practice will doprescriptions urgently depending on thecircumstances. For example, if you had asthma, epilepsy or angina and needed the tablets urgently, the prescription can be done the same day but cantake a few hours to process so you will be asked tocome back later that day. For tablets which are noturgent such as antidepressants or other routinemedication, the repeat prescription will be processedas usual and be available to collect after 2 workingdays. How do I order my tablets that the doctor has puton repeat for me?When a doctor puts a medication on repeat, he or shewill tell you. With the initial prescription, you will getanother piece of paper listing all your repeatprescriptions along side it. One week before yourtablets run out, you should tick the tablets you needon the piece of paper and put in the black prescriptionbox at the surgery or hand it to the receptionist.Always use your latest repeat request form as it willbe the most up to date. If you lose the form, don’tworry. Just write down what you need on a piece ofpaper and hand it in. The prescription will take at least2 working days to process after which you can pick itup at the surgery. If you would like it posted, pleaseleave a self addressed envelop with the repeatrequest. If you have made arrangements with apharmacist to pick it up, we will keep it until thepharmacist picks up the prescriptions which is oftendone at set times on certain days.

We want to use the fair as anopportunity to sample the different types of food thatcould be on offer here.”Chris and vicar Chris Burch have been working withb-connected and local volunteers to make the eventsomething special.
