Batavia City School District Batavia Highlights News From the Principal’s Office FEBRUARY 2020 Dear BHS Parents, Parenting is hard. I live that reality everyday as do all of you. When it comes to parenting teens we are trying to teach them to be young adults while still setting expectations and guidelines along the way. Our job as a parent is our most important work. We all fail sometimes but it is a job worth learning from our failures. I have a few thoughts below for you to consider. Say yes as much as possible to healthy activities. Encourage a school sport, music activity, or club. Encourage healthy volunteer efforts as well as community and/or church activities. Say no even when that is a word your child doesn’t want to hear. You have a right to know where your children are and what they are doing. Teenage brains are not fully developed until they are into their 20’s. Also, as adults we have acquired experience and wisdom that teens have not fully developed yet. Looking back, I am glad from some of the times my parents told me no on things I wanted to do. While I was angry about their rules as a teenager, I am now thankful that they were able to protect me from making poor choices. If you are concerned about choices your child is making and you would like some assistance, our administrative team and counselors at BHS are here to help. We can assist in finding resources that will help you with our hard and most important job: Parenting. Thank you, Paul D. Kesler Principal

Dear BHS Parents, Parenting is hard.

Freshman Class The start of 2020 can be a great time to reflect on the successes and challenges of the first part of the school year. We are at the midpoint of the year and hopefully students have a good idea of their

academic standing in each of their classes. It is important for students to continue to work hard in all of their classes and take note of any areas that need improvement.

For the freshman parents, the emotional and academic divide between middle and high school can be daunting. More is expected of high school students and there is less hand-holding by teachers. Encourage your child to connect with their teachers and school counselors to discuss scheduling, school activities, and after school academic help. In addition, get your child involved in a positive activity...but don’t overextend. Research says that students who are involved in healthy activities are much more likely to have a positive high school experience and get better grades than students who are not involved.

Make sure that your child is challenged and taking courses today that will help meet future goals. School counselors will begin the process of course selection for the 2020-21 school year in the next few weeks.

Mr. Batavia will be held on Friday, March 27th @ 7p.m. in the High School Auditorium. Tickets will be $8 and sold the week of the show and any left will be sold at the door. BHS National Honor Society sponsored the annual Turkey Trot at the high school. The food drive gathers food that is donated to the Salvation Army. As an incentive to students Mr. Kirkwood, Mr. Weicher, and Ms. Przybysz competed to collect the most canned goods. Ms. Przybysz collected the most avoiding the dressing as a turkey. As for Mr. Kirwood and Mr. Weicher they spent Tuesday dressed as turkeys. NHS would like to thank the staff and students that generously donated to the food drive.

SURVIVING THE STUDENT DROP-OFF/PICK-UP LANE Here are some helpful hints for navigating the student drop off/pick up lane. The daily AM and PM drop off times cause anxiety and stress for many. Parents should use designated parent drop off/pick up lane only. Refrain from using the State Street lot and Staff parking for dropping off and picking up students. Please do not create a 3-car-wide lane as it is unsafe and causes more delays.

Follow these tips to increase efficiency and decrease frustration: 1. 7:40 to 8:00 AM is the heaviest traffic. Try dropping off between 7:15 to 7:40 AM. 2. Available space. Pull through to use All entrances and unload at the curb closest to the school. Avoid stopping at the main, “awning” entrance if there is room to pull up. Unload at “Mr. Weicher’s” entrance, or consider dropping off at the music wing. 3. Quick escape. Students should grab and go as soon as the car stops to unload. 4. Never park in the drop off/pick up lane. Use the parking lot if you need to come into the building.

What are the BLUE LIGHTS_above the outside doors at BHS? The BLUE LIGHTS are an indicator that NO visitors can come into the building

and NO students/staff can leave. These lights are used during drills and emergencies.

This includes parents. During a BLUE LIGHT EVENT parents are NOT able to release or

pick-up students. We understand that this might effect scheduled appointments but there can be NO exceptions. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We take the security and safety of our

students and staff very seriously. Thank you for your understanding.

Attendance Procedures

Batavia City School District Board policy states that each student shall be required to remain in attendance until the last day of session in the school year in which the student becomes seventeen (17) years of age. PARENTS SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY APPROVE OF A STUDENT’S ABSENCE AND HAVE NOTIFIED THE SCHOOL, BY NEW YORK STATE LAW AND BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY, SOME ABSENCES MUST STILL BE MARKED ILLEGAL. Parents are asked to notify the Attendance Office by calling 343-2480, ext. 2007 of a student’s absence. If no call is received, School Messenger will call the parent. The student is required to bring a written ex-cuse from his/her parent within 5 days of the absence to the attendance office. Phone calls do not make your child ’s absence or early release legal. This note should include: The students name, the date(s) of absence, the reason for absence, the parent/guardian’s signature, and parent/guardian contact information such as name and daytime phone numbers. Failure to return with a note will result in disciplinary action as that absence will be considered unexcused.
