Short background story…
AW139 ‐ exceptional statistic;‐ 99.8% on time performance4 delays ‐ 1700 flights – 6300 takeoffs‐ Helicopter availability – 98.8% includingscheduled and unscheduled maintenance‐ Customized flexibility for every flight;2 till 15 pax version, VIP, cargo, sling
‐ 1 AW139 in operation the first year –only 7 days backup due to 1 year check
On Saturday 27th November 2010,our AW139 helicopter experienced aLightning Strike during an offshoremission.
Weather was snowy and nothunderstorm activity in the area.
During cruise, the pilots heard a loudbang outside followed by a CASmessage HEATED WINDSHIELD FAIL.
Pax went back to sleep again – so hefelt as comfortable as the pilotsthemself.
The helicopter flew further 20minutes to the platform and landedwithout noticing any problems.
A lightning strike in the North Sea
After landing our Bel Airtechnician noticed damages onthe tail plane and on four MRBlades.
The helicopter was AOG on theplatform.
We contacted AW 24.7 FleetOperations Centre and additionalmanpower from Bel Air was sendto the platform right away.
As a natural solution, otherhelicopters was leased to fulfillthe continous flight schedule forMaersk Oil.
AOG on the platform...
Bel Air employees started thepreminary lightning strikeinspektion on the platform withsupport from Agusta – MaerskOil employees, the Bel Air pilotsand Bel Air engineers was agreat team in this thoughenvironment.
Everybody still remember workingin windy and snowing weatherconditions with a chillfactor of ‐18degrees Celcius on the platform.
Working in very hard environment...
A lot of tests was performed onthe platform – they were allsatisfied – no fault found; HUMS and FDR download – all
parameters normal All possible selftest performed DCU download performed MGB upper deck inspected Flight controls Electrical system functional
checked Avionic system tested Detailed inspection of the tail
and tail boom
Test and inspections on the platform...
We were almost in hourly contactwith AW 24.7 support operationcenter to get the helicopter backonshore for inspections.
On 29th November, a ferry flightto our maintenance base wasgranted by AW Engineering team,having replaced the four MainRotor Blades on a cautionarybasis and after a lot ofinspections on the platform.
On the following day four newMain Rotor Blades were shippedby AW, direction North Sea.
Bel Air need of AW 24.7 support…
On 30th November the newBlades arrived at the Esbjergoffshore harbor, ready to bedispatched by a Maersk vessel.
The vessel was able to deliverthe four Blades on 2ndDecember, after the weatherconditions became acceptablefor crane operations offshore.
On 3rd December EASAapproved the Ferry Flight andthe aircraft left the platformand landed safely at our Bel Airmain base one hour later.
A team‐working experience
Inspections, a lot of inspections…
7 days inspections was made dayand night by our 12 engineers: MR Head (fully disassembled) MGB IGB removed for inspection Fuselage Tail boom Flight controls Hydraulic system Aft floats Avionic system‐ in cooperation withAgustaWestland.
Back in flight again…
…the aircraft was finally releasedinto service on 10th December,having replaced: Tail plane 5th MR Blade MR Duplex Bearing MGB, for AW investigation
... back into service for Maersk Oil ‐ only 2 weeks after the strike.
There have been no after‐effectswith the helicopter due to thelightning strike.
Fantastic helicopter and great teams …
Bel Air conclusion;
The AW139 helicopter is a fantasticmachine ‐ able to continue flightoperation after being hit by lightningstrike without the pilots andpassengers noticing it.
The AW 24.7 Fleet Operations Centreand the whole team behind did afantastic job together with a verydedicated Bel Air team – everybodywas working day and night to get ourhelicopter airborne again.

New generation is the future …
New generation helicopter‐ due to the high certification standard ofthe AW139 it was possible to safelycontinue flight after the lightning strike.
