NEW YORK CITY'S LONG-AWAITED DEVELOPMENT, FINALLY A REALITY
BACKGROUND
Plans for the area dateback to the mid-20thcentury, when real estatemogul, WilliamsZeckendorf, Sr., had plansof building the world'stallest skyscraper on theproperty, which would siton the hudson,
overlooking New Jersey
BACKGROUNDDespite his other successfulventures (he owned theChrysler Building and thefamed Astor Hotel in TimesSquare, and also had a handin development of theUnited NationsHeadquarters and Chicago'sMagnificent Mile), theproject was too expensivefor the banks, and the plannever came to fruition.
BACKGROUND
Years later, othersconsidered the primelocale as a site for a sportsstadium, but it wasn't untilthe city considereddeveloping the area for the2012 Olympics that theprocess became serious.
BACKGROUND
Although New York lostthe bid, MayorBloomberg suggestedthat the plan shouldcontinue, and that thearea should bedeveloped for otheruses.
