Overview

We propose adding AVID Elementary (AE)

into 2 elementary buildings in FSD145 next

year. We propose starting AE in the 4th

grades of those buildings.

3

Page 4: AVID 4th Grade · –Add 2 buildings per year for next 3 years until all 6 elementary buildings are AVID sites •Vertical Expansion –Grow down into younger grades in established

Overview

In following years, we propose that (a) the first

two buildings add AE in other grades and/or

(b) new buildings in the district add AE.

Eventually, we foresee a complete district wide

AVID College Readiness System implemented

in grades K-12.

What Is AVID?

…A structured college preparatory system

working directly with schools and districts

…A direct support structure for first-

generation college-goers, grades K-16

…A schoolwide approach to curriculum and

rigor

WICOR

Through WICOR strategies, students become more able to access rigorous content and think critically.

WICOR strategies can be used to support all of our district’s initiatives, such as 21st Century Learning, Project Based Learning and Student Centered Practices.

Students Learn to Use

Notes• Students take notes to define key terms,

provide examples, and explain steps in the

process. Students can add to their notes in

different colors over time.

• Students learn to refer to their notes while

completing assignments.

10

Collaboration and Inquiry

• Students are taught to identity, generate, and answer higher level questions

• Students participate in organized discussions using strategies such as Philosophical Chairs and Socratic Seminar

Potential Expansions

• Horizontal Expansion

– Add 2 buildings per year for next 3 years until all 6 elementary buildings are AVID sites

• Vertical Expansion

– Grow down into younger grades in established AVID Elementary sites

• Long Term

– Implement with fidelity to all 3rd grade classrooms

– Investigate potential of K-2 expansion

– K-2 expansion requires different AVID training due to differences in developmental level of students

26

Page 27: AVID 4th Grade · –Add 2 buildings per year for next 3 years until all 6 elementary buildings are AVID sites •Vertical Expansion –Grow down into younger grades in established

Measures of Success

• AVID Elementary Assessments

– Part of Certification Process (continuous

improvement)

1) Organization Assessment – Teachers assess

2) 2/3 Column Notes – Teachers Assess

3) Levels of Thinking – Students Assess

• Increases in students choosing AVID elective

• Higher retention rates in AVID elective classes

27

Page 28: AVID 4th Grade · –Add 2 buildings per year for next 3 years until all 6 elementary buildings are AVID sites •Vertical Expansion –Grow down into younger grades in established

Training & PD

• We have 3 AVID Certified Trainers that have done trainings across the country for AVID

• We have trained 5th-8th grade teachers in both MS buildings

• All trainings are WICOR based using research proven best practices of teaching

• Many trainings can be provided at no cost to the district

28

Page 29: AVID 4th Grade · –Add 2 buildings per year for next 3 years until all 6 elementary buildings are AVID sites •Vertical Expansion –Grow down into younger grades in established
