where we are, we always notice the change of seasons. And four times a year we are

faced with this inevitable fact of life.

The human body is especially susceptible to the nostalgia and emotion caused by a

shift in the weather. So when the weather changes abruptly and reminds us that we

are growing older, even the small things arouse our strongest emotions. No matter

where we are, we stare up at the same autumn moon. We watch the same springtime

sun set in a warm sky. They are the constants that prove to us we are alive and yet

hint at our mortality.

At this time of year, we sometimes feel a simultaneous longing for the past and

sorrow for the present. But of course, we couldn’t return to our past without

sacrificing all that we have in the present.

The Good Shepherd Harvest Appeal 2012

Our Harvest Appeal this year will be in aid of ‘The Mother’s Union Relief

Fund’ which offers emergency support to families all over the world who

have been affected by natural or man-made disaster.

In South Sudan, floods have led to a massive loss of homes, crops and live-

stock. In the Democratic Republic of Congo internal displacement has been a

major issue. Many vulnerable people such as women, children and the eld-

erly have been massacred - thousands of people killed, many others injured,

many women raped and infrastructures destroyed.

Vital support from the Mothers' Union Relief Fund has meant that emer-

gency food supplies of rice, beans and oil, and household items such as soap

and salt, have been distributed to over 250 displaced families.

With your support this Harvest, we can continue to support families around

the world who are facing adversity. You can make a real difference in their

lives. Thank you!

Parish News

Bonfire Night

Friday 9th Nov.

Come and celebrate this sparkling

night with us at The Good Shep-

herd. Enjoy the bonfire, fireworks

and a baked spud. The fire will be

lit at 6pm in the vicarage garden.

Summer Activities

It’s been a busy Summer at The

Good Shepherd. Our Festival Week

in June was a big success, involving

many of our local children and peo-

ple within the parish and beyond. In

July, many of our families spent a

great weekend away at Knowles

Tooth. Over a hundred people at-

tended our annual ‘Hymns and

Pimm’s’ event in August. Check

out the website for the photographs!

Autumn Discussions

This Autumn, we will be discussing

various topics and themes of current

interest. We will look to see what the

Christian perspective is on these and

consider what guidance our scriptures

give us. The topics include:

Eating habits and fasting

Yoga and meditation?

Gay marriage

Old Age and care in later life

Multicultural and Interracial issues

Our discussions will start on Wednes-

day 10th October. Please check the

website or speak to a member of the

clergy for further details.

Charity Giving

Each year at The Good Shepherd

we focus our attention on a local,

national and international charity.

This Harvest, we will be raising

funds for The ‘Mother’s Union Re-

lief Fund.’ At Christmas we will be

supporting The Chestnut Tree Chil-

dren’s Hospice and The Children’s

Society. Please give what you can.

Our Web Site: www.goodshepherdbrighton.org.uk. Find out what we do at

The Good Shepherd online. As well as accessing the weekly service sheet,

rotas and committee agendas, you can also download the Good Shepherd

magazine and keep up to date with church and community events.

Time for God

‘Time for God’ services resume on

Sunday 8th Sept. This is ideal for

young people and their families to

praise God in a relaxed setting. Please

come and join us!

Pastoral Care

Are you housebound, unwell, in hospi-

tal, feeling lonely or unable to come to

our services regularly? Would you like

someone from The Good Shepherd to

visit you? If you feel we might be able

to help, contact Fr Felix on 882987.

Cooking for

Children!

As part of the Brighton and Hove

Food Festival, which takes place

throughout September, free work-

shops will be held which encourage

children to have fun with their food,

explore new tastes and smells, and

even learn some new recipes! With

lots of other hands-on things to do for

budding foodies, plus a host of excit-

ing workshops, this is an unmissable

family day out. This event takes place

on 8th and 9th September at The

Brighthelm Centre.

National Suicide Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is

observed on September 10th each

year to promote worldwide action

to prevent suicides. Various ac-

tivities will be held to raise

awareness of the issue and to help

to lower the suicide rate through-

out our city, which is the second

highest in the country.

scheme can help you save money

on heating bills. Free booklet:

‘Keep Warm Keep and Well this

winter’ available from Brighton &

Hove council.

The Pavilion Ice Rink

The popular Royal Pavilion ice-rink is

back for a second year! Take a twirl

against the magical palace backdrop

or simply soak up the atmosphere

from the ringside restaurant. Listed by

the Financial Times as the number

two Christmas rink in the country last

Walk for Health

Regular walking can benefit your

health, but also can reduce the risk

of certain cancers. Brighton &

Hove is one of ten cities chosen by

ITV and the Dept of Health’s

Change4Life campaigns to mark

this special walking day this year

on Sunday September 23rd 2012

from 10.30am. People of all ages

and abilities (and their dogs!) are

welcome to help raise funds for the

new Sussex Cancer Support Centre

at the Royal Sussex. The walk be-

gins at the Peace Statue and each

walker is asked to donate a mini-

mum of £1.
