LETTER FROM THE EDITOR – Mandy Oxlade
Dear All
Welcome to the autumn edition of the club newsletter. I hope you are all keeping well.
The dry sports team has grown in size and we took the biggest team we have had in a while to Wamsad games this year. There were 16 team members. They have also had a successful time in each of the games they have attended. The team took part in the Rushmoor games on the 17
th July
and returned as team champions. We had second place finishes in 5 out of the 6 categories.
Away from the sports field the club have had their annual coach outing which was changed from Brighton to Eastbourne on the day of the trip due to an event going on in Brighton.
I would like to thank the members for their continued support over what has been a difficult time for the club.
The committee would welcome suggestions from the members at to what they would like to do on our social evenings.
Please remember that this is your newsletter and in order for the club to make each edition as interesting as possible we need your items. All items can be sent in the usual way.
Items can be sent or emailed to:

HELP NEEDED Carole Bennett really enjoys coming to swimming and it is very helpful for her. At the moment her family are unable to bring her to swimming due to illness in the family. Carole lives in Station Road, Stoke Mandeville. She needs to bring her wheelchair with her but can manage to get in and out of a car. If you feel you could help her get to swimming, even if it is not every week she would be very grateful. She can be contacted on 01296 612337 Thank You
*************************************************************************
From time to time members do need some help and we do not always know about it. Also some members may be willing to offer help to other members. If you would like to offer help or ask for help (not necessarily transport) via the newsletter please send a typed piece on A5 paper (if possible) to Mandy the newsletter editor. Details on how to contact her are in the newsletter.

DO YOU ENJOY SEWING?
We need someone to make the club some “Drawstring Feely Bags”! These are used for a game we play at socials. It involves different size of bags (about 20, they do not all have to be different sizes, several of each size will be fine). Then different everyday items are put into the bags (by the person running the social) and competitors have to guess what is in each bag. Not as easy as it sounds! The club will supply the material and advice on sizes. We need them for the February social. If you feel you may be able to help please speak to Lin Smith. Thank You.
*************************************************************
This could affect you...please read! If you change your phone number
(especially your mobile number), address or
MEDICATION please let us know.
Also, if anyone would like to be contacted by
email, please let us have your email address
and let us know if this changes in the future.
We cannot help you without the correct
information. Lin Smith

A DAY AT THE SEASIDE – 13 AUGUST 2011
After boarding the coach we were advised to avoid a „gay‟ day in
Brighton with an expected crowd of 100,000 plus. The majority
decided on Eastbourne as an alternative.
As usual we left in the rain and, as usual, we arrived in the sunshine albeit a bit windy. The helpful driver missed most of the busy roads by arriving from a different direction. When we arrived, we discovered there were the annual Air Show so many more people than usual.
We all went our different ways, and we decided, after a shopping spree on the pier, to get on the bus to Beachy Head. Our companions, Bill and Patricia, wanted to go on the top deck! After almost being blown away we got off and had lunch in the Beachy Head Restaurant – very enjoyable. When we walked across the road to catch the shuttle bus back, you very nearly saw us ‘wing-walking’ as we were practically on level with the planes! What a view though. After the bus brought us back down into the town via Birling Gap and a tour of the South Downs we tried to get into the Victoria Tea Rooms for a drink – it was so busy they suspended service so we crossed the road and had tea and coffee in the Pier Hotel, very comfortable and a good view of the last of the air display.
At the end of the very enjoyable day, the coach was waiting and with not much traffic on the roads got us home in record time.
Our thanks to Lin for her impeccable organising even down to the sunshine again. Perhaps next year, Lin, you could do something about the wind – if you’ll pardon the expression! We will look forward to that!

THE DAY WE WENT TO BRIGHTON Eastbourne!
Saturday morning we boarded the coach ready to go on the club trip to
Brighton BUT THEN Mike announced there was a parade going on in
Brighton which meant a lot of people and problems parking and holdups getting there. After consulting everyone on the coach it was decided to go
to Eastbourne. When we got there we discovered there was an air
show that weekend, an added bonus. Thanks to our great driver Steve, we got parked easily and all set off for a day by the sea. The weather was very kind to us and everyone seemed to have a good day. Comments made about the day: “We had a great day, thanks to the committee for all their hard work in organising it” M and P.
“I had a wonderful day, thanks to Lin helping me and for arranging such a well run day” D. W. Thanks for a lovely day. Eastbourne was great, lovely to breathe the sea air. Looking forward to next year. J.W. The day was good, the weather nice and the planes awesome. L.B.
Everyone seemed to have a good day. Thanks to everyone who passed the sweets round the coach. Maybe next year you may join us on a good day out.
IMPORTANT SWIMMING NOTICE
Jim has agreed to take responsibility for the swimming
on Wednesday evenings. However, if you encounter
any problems that Jim cannot solve, please speak to Lin
Smith or Mike King. Meanwhile the committee thanks
Jim for taking charge of this important element of club
activities.
MEMBERS CHOICE – NOVEMBER SOCIAL
It was decided at the last committee meeting that it was
high time the members had more say in what they want
from their social evenings.
With this in mind, we have not yet organised an activity for
the November social. Instead we want you, the members
to let us know (beforehand please) what you would like us
to arrange.
Check out what we have in store for you in September,
October and December and then drop us a line, by note or
email with your idea for November 3rd
.
Lin Smith, Secretary.
Joke from John White
A man went to the doctor‟s with a carrot in his right ear, a cucumber in his
left ear, and a banana stuck up his nose. “What do you think‟s wrong with
me”‟ he asked. “Simple” replied the doctor. “You‟re not eating properly”.
RUSHMOOR SWIMMING GALA
If there is anyone interested in competing in the above event
please let me know as soon as possible. The gala takes place on
Saturday 15th
October.

Happy Birthday
Three club members are celebrating “Mile Stone” Birthdays soon.
Chris Brown was 65 on Monday August 22nd and retires at the end of the month.
Katie King will be a teenager when she celebrates her 13th Birthday on September 17th.
Viv Barrett will be enjoying her 50th Birthday on 18th October.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THEM ALL.
JIM COUZA’S BBQ
On Saturday 20th
August a group of 10 members attended the above
event. We had a lovely time enjoying the surroundings and the lovely
music. John White, Chris Baker and I had a successful day with the
raffle. We won 12 prices between us. I would like to thank Karen and
John for lovely day.

Interesting History
There is an old Hotel/Pub in Marble Arch, London, which used to
have gallows adjacent to it. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after
a fair trial of course) to be hanged.
The horse-drawn dray, carting the prisoner, was accompanied by an
armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the
prisoner if he would like “ONE LAST DRINK”.
If he said “YES”, it was referred to as „ONE FOR THE ROAD‟.
If he declined, that prisoner was „ON THE WAGON‟.
England is old and small and the local folk started running out of
places to bury people, so they would dig up coffins and would take
the bones to a bone-house and re-use the grave. When re-opening
these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks
on the inside and they realised they had been burying people alive.
So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, thread it through
the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.
Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the
graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus someone could be,
„SAVED BY THE BELL‟ or was considered a „DEAD RINGER‟.
Now, whoever said history was boring!

ANOTHER JOKE FROM JOHN WHITE
“I‟m suffering from terrible constipation” said the patient to his doctor.
“What have you been eating?” asked the GP. “Snooker balls” replied the
patient. “I had two reds for breakfast, three blues for lunch and ten browns,
a pink and a black for dinner”. “I think I know what the problem is” replied
the doctor. “You‟re not eating enough greens”.
