Autumn 1 - Thorney Island

Autumn 1 Our topic this half term was ‘Journey’. We used the adventure-filled picture book by Aaron Becker and well-known fairy tales to inspire our own journey stories in English. In science, we took part in lots of hands-on, enquiry-based science lessons to learn all about light and reflection. We also found out about why light is symbolic in R.E. this term by learning about Hinduism and Diwali. Through reading and acting out the story of Rama and Sita, we learned all about the first Diwali, as well as why and how it is celebrated today. We made our own Diya lamps by creating thumb pots and decorating them with bright colours. At the end of term, we had our very own Diwali party as a celebration of our learning.

Autumn 1

Our topic this half term was ‘Journey’. We used the adventure-filled picture book by

Aaron Becker and well-known fairy tales to inspire our own journey stories in English. In

science, we took part in lots of hands-on, enquiry-based science lessons to learn all

about light and reflection.

Autumn 2

This half term, our topic was ‘Healthy Heroes’. We received a letter from Agent Steel who wanted our help to make his superheroes fit and well

again! We tasted different healthy foods and made pizzas in D.T., we also learned all about our bones and a healthy, balanced diet in science and wrote about all of this in a set of instructions in English. Agent Steel was

so impressed that he made us all honorary superheroes!

Finally, we graduated as honorary superheroes!

Some healthy foods were tastier than

others!

We chose our favourite ones to put on our pizzas.

Spring 1

We did lots of fun, hands-on science this half term to understand magnets

and forces for our topic: ‘May the Force Be with You’. We even got to

investigate magnetic slime!

We worked in teams to investigate friction by testing how far a toy car

travelled on different surfaces. Everybody in the team had a different role.

As well as this, we became newspaper reporters in English. We read The

Iron Man by Ted Hughes then reported on the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon

landing on earth! In D.T., we made and launched bottle rockets and in

R.E., we found out about the importance of water in faith. The padre gave

up his time to talk to us about how water is used in baptism at the church.

We greatly improved our gymnastics this half term, especially our

balances and sequences. First we practised on the floor then we applied

our skills to apparatus and sequences with a partner.

Spring 2

This half term, our topic was Welcome to the Jungle’ and a lot of our

learning was linked to Brazil and the rainforest. We all dressed up as

explorers on the first day. Our classroom turned into an aeroplane, we

flew to Brazil to explore and got to taste some tropical fruits!

We did lots of drama in English to help us understand both sides of the

deforestation debate so we could write our own discussion texts.

We visited Staunton Glasshouse to support our geography and science

learning. The glasshouse allowed us to experience what it would feel like

in a tropical rainforest and we got to see how plants can adapt.

We were even lucky enough to meet a couple of creatures that can

be found in rainforests around the world!
