Presentation of

autoimmune disease

Page 4: Auto immune disease

A disease in which the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues, leading to the deterioration and in some cases to the destruction of such tissue.

autoimmune disease

Page 5: Auto immune disease

include systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren syndrome, Hashimoto thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile (type 1) diabetes, polymyositis, scleroderma, Addison disease, vitiligo, pernicious anemia, glomerulonephritis, and pulmonary fibrosis.

Examples of autoimmune diseases

They are mainly two types

1. Systemic disorders2. Local disorders

Types of auto immune disease

Page 7: Auto immune disease

Systemic disorders involve autoantibodies that are not specific to antigens found on certain tissues. Examples include:

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) Goodpasture’s syndrome Sarcoidosis Scleroderma Rheumatoid arthritis Dermatomyositis

Systemic disorders

Examples of local disorders that are specific to a particular tissue or organ

Dermatomyositis  Psoriasis  Vitiligo  Alopecia areata Hemolytic anemia Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome Pernicious anemia

Local disorders

Page 9: Auto immune disease

Autoimmune diseases affect many parts of the body. The most common organs and tissue affected are:

joints muscles skin red blood cells blood vessels connective tissue endocrine glands

symptoms

Page 10: Auto immune disease

Diagnosed by clinical symptoms. Confirmed by detecting the auto Ab in the serum of the

patients. Autoantibodies are demonstrated by immunoflurescent Ab

test, haemagglutination, Complement fixation, immunodiffusion, Radio immuno assay, etc.

Diagnosis of Auto immune disease

Some autoimmune diseases are treated with medications that alleviate specific symptoms.

Haemolytic anaemia: Treated with Vit B12

Throtoxicosis: Treated with antithyroid drugs. Myasthenia Gravis: Treated with Choline estrase inhibitors Rhemotoid Arthritis: Anti-inflammatory drugs Lupes Erythematosus: Treated with immono suppresive or

antimitiotic drugs such as Corticosteoid,

Treatment

• Autoimmune diseases and conditions exist whenthe body produces abnormal cells, which attackthe body, itself• Most autoimmune diseases strike women moreoften than men• The causes of autoimmune diseases are notknown but some autoimmune diseases seem torun in families• Strike any part of the body, symptoms varywidely and diagnosis and treatment are oftendifficult• Medical science is striving to design therapiesthat prevent autoimmune diseases
