The news will be a relief to Holden fans, especially after speculation TeamVodafone could be poached by a rival manufacturer. Nissan was the first manufacturer to confirm joining Holden and Ford in the V8s, with American brand Chrysler also expected to join. Whincup to race in Clipsal V8 SUPERCARS champion Jamie Whincup says he will compete in this weekend’s season-opening Clipsal 500 meeting despite mourning the death of his father. Whincup’s father David died on Sunday after a short battle with lymphoma cancer. ‘‘Last week was without a doubt the toughest week of my life,’’ Whincup said. ‘‘Dad rode the motorsport wave with me every step of the way, which I plan to still be the case right into the future.’’ Kenseth wins Daytona 500 MATT Kenseth capped a crazy 36 hours for NASCAR by winning the first postponed Daytona 500 in 55 editions of the marquee event in Florida. Kenseth held off Dale Earnhardt Jr and Roush Fenway Racing teammate Greg Biffle over a two-lap finish. Australian former V8 Supercar driver Marcos Ambrose ran as high as second during the first half of the 200-lap race but finished 13th after being involved in a late incident. Ricciardo must prove he can fill Webber’s shoes DANIEL Ricciardo has been told he needs to prove he has a wow factor if he is to succeed Mark Webber at Red Bull. Ricciardo will begin his first full Formula One season with Toro Rosso at next month’s season-opening Aust- ralian Grand Prix. He and French rookie Jean- Eric Vergne, 21, have been in- stalled in Toro Rosso’s two cars after Swiss driver Sebas- tien Buemi and Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari were dumped. Red Bull owner Die- trich Mateschitz said his main aim was to elevate one of the Torro Rosso drivers to the Red Bull team. ‘‘Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne are highly talented and have great poten- tial, but the question will only arise if, for example, Webber stops at the end of 2012,’’ Mateschitz said. Webber plans to continue in 2013 but, in any case, Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost says Ricciardo or Vergne are like- ly to need more than this season to show they are suit- able for Red Bull. And, Tost says, they will have to display ‘‘the right stuff’’ and ‘‘a wow effect’’. ‘‘When we talk about the right stuff for Red Bull Racing we are talking about a double world championship-winning team, which means the drivers who get elevated there must have the same ab- ility to win races and cham- pionships,’’ Tost said. ‘‘I would say that this wow effect is not so easily manage- able in a first season — but it definitely has to be delivered in the second season. Both have done extremely well in all the series they’ve raced in before entering F1 and they showed potential at the test (in Spain recently).’’ Tost said Ricciardo, with 11 races for HRT in F1 last year, has the edge over Vergne, but he expects both to improve. Aussies ride Coast waves to perfection Stephanie Gilmore won her Roxy Pro quarter-final at Snapper Rocks yesterday and will now face fellow Australian Sally Fitzgibbons in the semi-finals Picture: SCOTT FLETCHER LOCAL hero Joel Parkinson scored the competition’s first perfect 10 to reach the quarter-final of the men’s world surfing championship event on the Gold Coast. The women’s event saw the elimination of the world and defending Roxy Pro champ- ion Carissa Moore, as all four semi-final places were filled by Australians. After being beaten in a non- elimination round early, a steely-eyed Parkinson came out firing. Not even the pain of a bluebottle sting could dis- tract him as he grabbed the 10-point wave with five min- utes remaining to leave fel- low Queenslander Julian Wilson with no hope of catch- ing up. Parkinson’s memory of the ride was patchy. ‘‘I couldn’t remember exac- tly how many turns I did and I heard the commentator say what score do you want to give it and I was like, ‘I’ll give it a 10’,’’ he said. ‘‘I feel nice and relaxed and on that last wave I felt like some aggress- ion finally came out, and that’s what I wanted to feel.’’ Parkinson comes up against Jordy Smith in the quarter-final in what could be a lively meeting — in their last meeting at Snapper Rocks in 2011 the South Af- rican eliminated Parkinson from the event in Round 5. ‘‘That’s what makes for healthy competition, they’re the ones you live for and you’re happy to get involved in a real rivalry,’’ Parkinson said. The other quarter-final heats pit Gold Coaster Josh Kerr against the red hot Kelly Slater, Owen Wright against Brazil’s Adriano De Souza and Taj Burrow against fel- low Aussie Adrian Buchan. In the upset of the day, Tyler Wright pulled off a stunning coup, eliminating Moore, with Laura Enever, world No. 2 Sally Fitzgibbons and local favourite Stephanie Gilmore all winning their heats to make the semi-finals an all-Australian contest. Moore’s elimination also means she loses her world No. 1 ranking. Fitzgibbons will meet Gil- more in the semi-finals. With conditions deteriorat- ing, a decision will be made early this morning whether to put both events on hold, with competition un- likely to resume before the weekend. INDIA have blasted their way to 3-321 in 36.4 overs for a stunning bonus-point win over Sri Lanka to prolong their Australian tour until at least Friday. Needing the improbable target from 40 overs to earn a bonus point win at Bellerive and keep their tournament alive, Virat Kohli smashed 133 off 86 balls to lead the In- dians to the most extraordin- ary run-chase witnessed on Australian soil. Kohli, who hit 16 fours and two sixes, put on 115 with Gautam Gambhir (63 off 64) and 120 with Suresh Raina to blow the Sri Lankans away. In an incredible 35th over, Kohli and Raina took 24 off Sri Lankan pace spearhead Lasith Malinga (1-96) to erase any doubt that India would reach the target within the 40 overs. The Indians’ next assign- ment will be the couch on Friday, when they will hope to watch Australia beat the Sri Lankans so they can pro- gress to play the home side in the best-of-three final series. India may yet salvage something from a horror tour, while batting great Sa- chin Tendulkar, who helped generate the momentum for his side with 39 off 30 balls, may not have yet played his last game in Australia. Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag (30 off 15) smashed 50 off just 33 balls to have the Indian fans believing a mir- acle was possible. They were right and the 3467 fans went home knowing they wit- nessed something special. On a drama-filled evening, a power failure delayed play between innings for nearly an hour.
