Dear Readers,
New forms of technology, innovations and – last but not least – highly motivated and well qualified employees: the-se are important preconditions for business success. These factors are what medium-sized companies stand for. Such companies put a major emphasis on creativity and the spirit of invention. This has been demonstrated once again by the ‘Top 100’ awards, given to the most innovative companies in the medium-sized category. This year the RÖHM group succeeded in carrying off this seal of quality for the second time in succession. We react with exceptional speed to new market developments, and offer the best kind of processing solutions for all exciting challenges in the world of clamping technology. Just ask us to show what we can do!
But RÖHM not only stands for innovation, it also represents tradition. These two features are not mutually exclusive, but complement each other in an ideal way in our company – as has been the case for more than 100 years. Our portfolio covers an extraordinary variety of fields of application – ran-ging from RÖHM’s micro technology, which is perfectly suited to the processing of the tiniest workpieces, to our large-sized chucks, which can be used for the processing of pipes and sleeves used in the production of crude oil and natural gas.
This issue of our customers’ magazine will tell you what addi-tional novelties we have recently developed. And you can also learn how RÖHM is getting on in Brazil and China by adapting itself to the market demands of the two countries.

Under the heading of internationalism, it is also worth men-tioning that the global economy is currently showing a signi-ficant decline in incoming orders in some quarters, as well as diminishing optimism in relation to future forecasts. We re-main convinced, however, that we are able to make our way on the basis of our cost-efficient and long-lived products, as well as the innovations I mentioned earlier, even in times of increasing economic difficulty.
We are also hoping for numerous positive impulses to emerge from the most important trade fairs in the industry – the IMTS in Chicago, the AMB in Stuttgart and the JIMTOF in Tokio.
In the confidence that we enjoy an excellent position, both nationally and internationally, we are looking optimistically to the future and hope you will find plenty to interest you in this edition of RÖHM News!
Yours sincerely,
Michael Fried, Dr.-Ing.

They are characterised by an excellent spirit of invention and ex-
emplary innovation processes, and they are successful in bridging
the gap from the bright idea to market success. That is what the
most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany are like.
On 22 June in Friedrichshafen, Ranga Yogeshwar handed over
the certifi cates for the Top 100 seal of quality. RÖHM was one of
the companies to receive the award.
Far-sightedness pays off. That has been the experience of RÖHM – a
company specialising in clamping technology. With 1255 employees
in Germany, RÖHM produces machine components for the holding
and positioning of tools and workpieces. Ahead of all other suppliers,
the company recognised the potential of energy-effi cient solutions at
an early stage. And although in the fi rst instance there was no sign
of interest for a new product generation of this kind, RÖHM started
to develop it. ‘Our gut feeling told us that the future belongs to this
technology,’ recalls CEO Michael Fried. And in fact success was not
long in coming. ‘Our “green” components have given us several years’
head start on the competition,’ says Fried with satisfaction.
RÖHM is a tradition-based company, going back to 1909. A particular
feature of innovation management at the company is the execution
of self-tests. On the path to serial maturity, new developments are
not just tried out in the test laboratory, they must also stand the test
of practice at our own production plant. Only then can the ‘market
maturity’ tag be affi xed to the product. ‘After all, laboratory tests can
never duplicate use in real conditions 100 percent,’ explains Michael
Fried. And he goes on to point out another advantage of such an
approach: ‘In this way our customers can get an impression of the
reliability of the machine components directly on site.’
Important partners in the fi eld of innovation marketing are the univer-
sities, with whom RÖHM conducts research into the fundamentals. A
current project is the integration of sensors in clamping tools. There is
no technology for this to date, but the management is confi dent that
the market will adopt this solution in future.
Professor Nikolaus Franke and his team at the Vienna University of
Economics and Business scrutinised the innovation management of
281 medium-sized companies. The best of them were given the Top
100 seal of quality. CEO Michael Fried is delighted about the award,
and emphasises that it was a team effort. ‘I see this seal of quality
as a mark of honour to our employees. Their enthusiasm and their
efforts are our number one innovation factor. At the same time we
have established the right processes to enable this creativity to unfold
in a productive way. These two things together are what makes us
successful.’

RÖHM has just launched on the market a new synthetic gripper
with individually adaptable jaws. To produce the gripper so it has
a perfect fi t, all you need is a 3D model of the workpiece.
Whether it is a matter of round materials, prismatic workpieces or
free-form surfaces, the RÖHM RRMP synthetic gripper can be produ-
ced in very little time to meet the customer’s individual requirements.
Innovative manufacturing methods are what makes this possible.
In practical terms, the RRMP makes an impression with its extremely
light weight and proven durability. The synthetic gripper is put to the
test at RÖHM on a daily basis – in the Extra-RV drill chuck assembly
line, for example. Here absolute reliability and stability are indispensa-
ble. The breakdown of a single component would result in the entire
assembly line’s coming to a stop. Joachim Hander, manufacturing fo-
reman responsible for drill chuck assembly, says: ‘On our production
line, the RRMP is used to handle something like 16,000 drill chuck
sleeves every day. Where in the past maintenance had to be carried
out after two million lifts, the synthetic gripper just keeps going wi-
thout any problem. It has now carried out more than eight million
gripping cycles, without any maintenance and without any wear and
tear. That adds up to a considerable gain in terms of productivity.’
For unlimited, multiple turning, the RRMP can also be used in combi-
nation with a threefold air distributor. The signal of the limit switches
is transmitted by way of a rotary transmission leadthrough.

RÖHM presents innovativeproducts
High-tech in a minimum compass is offered by RÖHM’s
individual clamping solutions. For the processing of
delicate microcomponents like watch housings, bezels,
cogwheels, pushers and many other clock and watch
parts, we supply the tools that are needed.
One example is the new KFG-90/8. With its 8 jaws, it is
capable of exceedingly sensitive processing without any
risk of deformation – and that with a diameter of just
90 mm.
And when it comes to medical technology as well,
RÖHM also has exciting clamping solutions. Dental
implants for example, as well as implants for hip and
knee joints, are manufactured with RÖHM’s clamping
chucks, centric clamping units and microspindles.
The products of the RÖHM micro technology are shown
at our exhibitions in its entire width. You are cordially
invited to be convinced!

RÖHM micro technology:clamping technology for the smallest workpieces
The latest power chuck from RÖHM is notable for the rapidity and
extreme simplicity with which the jaws and clamping units can be
changed. Without any need of taking the chuck off the machine,
mandrels like Absis and Agilis, collet chucks and face drivers can be
changed in the shortest possible space of time.
This chuck is particularly suitable for processing operations where the
clamping units have to be changed frequently, as in this case only the
clamping inserts need to be changed and this is easily handled by the
rapid change system.
Moreover, the Duro-NCSE Flex offers a high degree of clamping
accuracy and great clamping strength. When the jaws are simply trans-
posed, turned around or changed, the accuracy of the chuck remains
quite unaffected.
RÖHM’s sophisticated rapid jaw switching system does not need any
additional piston lift to uncouple the clamping piston. The wedge hook
connection remains fully engaged at all times.

F-senso pull-in force measurement device
F-senso pull-in force measurement device.
The F-senso pull-in force measurement device enables you to check the pull-in
force of your tool clamping system. The regular monitoring of the pull-in force
makes it possible to detect changes in the clamping strength before they have
an effect on the quality of processing.
Coming with a suitable attachment for HSK, PSC or steep-angle taper, the
measurement device is pulled into the spindle taper of your processing unit and
so measures the pull-in force exactly. As the pull-in force of the tool clamping
system has a crucial effect on the processing quality as well as having implications
for safety, we recommend regular checks. Only in this way can changes in the pull-
in force be detected at an early stage and countermeasures taken accordingly.
The benefi ts at a glance:
- Interchangeable attachments for HSK, PSC and steep-angle taper
- Exact tool contour supports automatic change of tool by the tool
changing system
- Revolving ring with gradations for simulating the tolerances of tool and spindle
- The last displayed readings are saved, and are shown when you switch
on again
- Automated switch-off
- Long operating times thanks to optimised electrical components and 9V
block battery
- Compact design
- Ergonomically designed handle

RÖHM’s revolving tailstock centres have been reengineered in
function and design. Due to the new features they are even better in
daily use and offer additional advantages. New splash water grooves
for example, as well as improved lubrication and a closely-tolerance
bearing seat, help to prolong service life. The housing has also been
redesigned in a slimline version, so as to minimise potential obstruction.
In addition, with a view to facilitating rapid understanding, the
names of the different types have been changed. The numerical
combinations have now been replaced by clear appellations like
‘Basic’, ‘Slim’ or ‘Speed’, making it possible to assign the revolving
tailstock centres to the right category at a glance.
Perfectly adapted for multiple applications RÖHM provides the

On the road to the non-hydraulic machine, RÖHM is consistently
expanding its range of electrically operated clamping systems.
RÖHM’s electric cylinder combine the strengths of precision
mechanics with those of the most ultra-modern control
technology and electronics.
The original range, comprising the EHS 37/50 and EVS 50
models, has now been expanded with the addition of the
EHS 67/68.
Power savings of 13,800 kWh per year!
That is equivalent to the power consumption of 4 small-family
households. Electronic clamping systems from RÖHM make it
possible to achieve signifi cant cost savings.
In view of the improved energy effi ciency they offer, more and
more companies are turning to electromechanics. So RÖHM’s
electrical clamping systems of the e-Quipment series are making
an important contribution to the sustainable improvement of
energy effi ciency in mechanical engineering.EHS electric cylinder
Sample calculation for energy savings with an electric cylinder:
The above assumptions have been based on a standard manufacturing process in three-shift operation, and may vary depending on the application involved. Where greater efficiency is achieved in the processing (e.g. by getting the best possible match between the cylinder and the process, or through shorter lift times), even more energy can be saved by indirect means.

At the beginning of July RÖHM dedicated its new branch in China. The official opening was attended by more than 50 visitors, including representatives of highly regarded machine manufacturers and end customers.
The branch had already started its business activities a few months before. ‘Given the strong growth in the Asian economic region, we think there is a lot of opportunity for growth in this venture,’ said CEO Michael Fried.
At the same time the Eastpo trade fair took place in Shanghai. Here RÖHM was represented by a stand measuring some 40 square me-tres. As well as RÖHM’s wide standard assortment, magnetic clam-ping chucks and clamping tools for the mechanical engineering and automotive industries were on view.
The positive feedback of the visitors shows that RÖHM is well ac-quainted with the requirements and expectations of the different regi-ons – and is also in a position to offer the solutions that are needed.
In the following interview Ünal Celik, Managing Director of RÖHM China, describes the challenges facing the Chinese branch.
RÖHM opens new branch in Shanghai
The RÖHM trade fair stand at the Eastpo in Shanghai.
RÖHM’s branch in Shanghai has only just been founded. At
the same time, China is anything but undiscovered territory for
RÖHM – isn’t that so?
Ünal Celik: Yes indeed, RÖHM has been active in China through its
sales agencies since as long ago as the
eighties. Our having been a presence in
China for years creates the foundations for
a successful future.
The new branch in Shanghai was foun-
ded with a view to serving the steadily
growing market in China and meeting the
requirements of our customers in the best
and most reliable way. With 23 million in-
habitants, Shanghai is one of the biggest
cities in China, as well as being the most
important industrial centre in the country.
Where are the challenges of daily business located?
They consist in the need to supply solutions to customers and dealers
that are exactly tailored to their requirements. The steadily growing
market expects us to provide the best possible clamping technology
solutions, as well as customer-friendly service and above all the flexi-
bility that is required if we are to adapt to local conditions. These are
challenges that we are very happy to take on. Our extensive range
of products related to all aspects of clamping technology puts us in
touch with customers in a wide variety of industries. We work in the
railway, aviation, wind power, oil, energy and craft sectors – and of
course also in rapidly growing areas like the automotive industry.
What is the most exciting thing about the Chinese market?
China has developed to become the world’s biggest sales market for cars and machine tools. This has had the result that production sites are becoming more and more widely spread out, and we must ad-just our operations accordingly. For instance, important projects are being realised in China today in regions like Xingjiang in the west, something like 5 hours away from Shanghai by air. This means we have to do pioneering work in these regions, to give such projects our technical support right from the start.
I think there is still a whole lot of potential in China, which is one of the world’s most important growth markets, coupled with the stea-dily increasing demand for our products. The Chinese market offers
RÖHM numerous opportunities.

RÖHM opens new branch in Shanghai
What are the most important tasks facing RÖHM Brazil, at the
moment and in future?
Silvia Malahodky: We are hoping to work
harder at expanding our existing markets
and opening up new ones. Given the ra-
pid economic growth in Brazil, we have
the best possible conditions for this.
We are also aiming to work more closely
together with RÖHM’s German branches.
Their expertise, especially in connection
with complex clamping technology tasks,
is an indispensable support for us.
What is special about RÖHM on the Brazilian market?
RÖHM has been a presence in Brazil since as long ago as 1959. So we
are very well acquainted with the special requirements of the market.
Our customers in the machine tool and automotive industries, the
metal-processing companies and the trade generally all have a high
regard for our services – which can extend, when needed, to the
complete commissioning of our clamping tools on site.
What further challenges are you faced with?
We hope to work even more closely with our customers, so as to
establish sustainable business relationships built on mutual trust. One
way we are aiming to do this is by employing more field staff in São
Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo; another is by attending mo-
re trade fairs. In October, for example, we will be represented by a
stand at the Mercopar trade fair in Caxias do Sul.
The qualifications of our employees are another important point. We
make sure that these are constantly up to the minute, by organising
further training courses and seminars for our staff.
As you can see, we are well set up and are looking forward to the
challenges of the future.

modern design to make drive systems that are both economical and
environmentally friendly. Another application involves the clamping of locking cylinders for complex five-sided milling and drilling opera-tions. This can be challenging, as Head of Production André Stäger explains: ‘We guarantee our customers extremely short delivery times for all orders in batch sizes from two to 1500 parts. This means flexi-bility is essential.’ And finally, the turning and milling experts from the ‘triple A’ canton of Argovia are manufacturing intelligently designed
aluminium supports for a revolutionary LED lighting system develo-
ped by a Swiss inventor.
Chiron had positive experience with RÖHM
The mechanical engineers at Chiron recommended RÖHM for
the workpiece clamping in connection with their machine, which they supplied to the customer’s specific requirements. The Tuttlingen company had had positive experience with the clamping technolo-gy experts in Sontheim, who besides had a branch of their own in Switzerland not far from Veltheim. Deputy Managing Director Da-miano Casafina came over from Herzogenbuchsee to find out about Werder’s special requirements right from the horse’s mouth. ‘It soon became clear to me that only a customised solution would be able to provide the necessary flexibility,’ Casafina emphasises. Based on the customer’s requirements, and working in close cooperation with
RÖHM’s designers in Germany, a suitable solution was developed.
This has finally given rise to the combination of a standard clamping
device with some extra specifications.
Based in Veltheim, Switzerland, the Werder company is a valued
partner to its customers all over the world when it is a matter
of precision turning and milling. Because Werder not only offers
quality but is also meticulous in adhering to delivery schedules,
companies are happy to place orders with the Swiss family busi-
ness even in times of unfavourable exchange rates. A Chiron
processing centre has now just been set up to provide greater
flexibility in connection with special orders. Customised clamping
solutions from RÖHM make it possible for the Argovian turning
and milling experts to achieve the desired flexibility and pro-
ductivity in making parts for turbochargers, locking systems or
revolutionary LED luminaires. By consistently asking questions
and coming up with a solution that fitted all the customer’s
requirements exactly without going beyond budget, RÖHM’s
Swiss branch succeeded in creating a win-win situation for all
those involved.
‘We were even more delighted with the new machine when we saw
how well these chucks met our requirements,’ Claude Werder recalls.
‘Thanks to the comprehensive questions that RÖHM’s specialists put
to us,’ the Managing Director of Werder AG continues, ‘we now have
the customised solution and the flexibility that we wanted.’ A brand
new Chiron FZ 15 Magnum processing centre with attached FlexCell
Uno, capable of operating three shifts, can now make bearings out
of special brass for the turbochargers of big diesel engines with ma-
ximum precision and reliability. These are to be used in ships of ultra-

Modified standard products with a perfect fit
Today workpieces for the manufacture of cylinders are clamped using
pneumatically powered KZSP 160 centric clamping units, which make
it possible for five-sided processing to be carried out. The basic jaws
have finely serrated edges and a tongue and groove interface. The-
se effect a lift of 3.2 millimetres and make it possible for Werder’s
own clamping jaws to
be mounted on the
unit. ‘This was another
request on our part,’
says Head of Produc-
tion André Stäger. Mo-
reover a connection for
oiled sealing air with its
own pipework has be-
en incorporated in the
body of the clamping
unit. The chuck is fa-
stened securely on the
machine’s round table
by way of a connecting
plate and connected to
the pneumatic feed.
For the manufacture of
the axial slide bearings
in special brass and the
luminaire mounts in aluminium, Werder makes use of a Type PKF 150
pneumatically operated precision power chuck from RÖHM. This too
has been modified to meet the customer’s requirements. Not only
does the chuck clamp with extreme precision, the clamping force
can also be finely adjusted so that thin or fragile workpieces can be
securely fixed in place for processing without any risk of their losing
their shape.
Furthermore, here too a pipe connection in the body of the clamping
element allows for the passage of oiled sealing air, so facilitating the
clamping and release. The adapter plate has been designed in such
a way that it will also fit the larger PKF 160 variant of the precision
power chuck.
Reliability makes ghost shifts possible
Four specimens of each chuck were supplied to Werder. At the milling
centre each workpiece has two pairs of chucks set up on a swivel ta-
ble. On two of these the necessary milling and drilling operations for
the axial slide be-
arings are carried
out, everything
being completely
automated, while
on the other two,
during primary
processing time,
the half-finished
workpieces are
turned around so
the reverse side
can be processed,
and new work-
For a bright future
pieces are got ready for processing. This is accomplished by the Fanuc
robot, again in a completely automated way. All the components
work so reliably that unmanned ghost shifts are possible.
After the table has been swung out, making two processed work-
pieces accessible, the robot first clears the workpiece of chips wi-
th a blast of air before it is released by the chuck. Now the part is
extracted and the chuck
itself is aerated to remo-
ve any chips adhering.
Workpieces that have
been processed on the
front side are turned
around and clamped in
the chuck once more.
Completely processed
workpieces are depo-
sited by the robot on
the pallet provided.
The robot then fetches
another blank. If all the
spaces on the work-
piece pallet are taken,
the robot pushes them
into a paternoster sto-
rage system and pulls
out another pallet with
unmachined parts and
empty delivery spaces. ‘Above all the reliability with which the chucks
work makes it possible for us to carry on production in unmanned
shifts and so adhere to delivery schedules, even when dealing with
large item quantities,’ Werder’s Head of Production declares.
Adherence to schedule secures competitive advantage
This becomes particularly clear in the processing of aluminium lumi-
naire supports. Something dreamed up by a Swiss hobbyist is being
turned into a reality by the Werder company’s precision mechanics.
LUXLIGHT LED lamps and luminaires from Switzerland are currently
taking the European market by storm. In view of their low power
consumption and long service life, but above all because of their in-
tense luminosity, they are in ever greater demand. ‘This is already re-
sulting in orders running to batch sizes of 2500 or more, which have
to be delivered promptly,’ Claude Werder remarks.
As the orders are frequently intended for major construction projects
like shopping centres, warehouses or automobile dealerships, you
can understand the quantity and the urgency involved. ‘With first-
time installations or conversions our LUXLIGHT LED products, when
integrated with new or existing fittings, can achieve energy savings of
up to 70%, with a service life of as much as 50,000 hours and consi-
derable CO2 reductions,’ the founder of LUXLIGHT reports.
Besides the LED technology, the innovative element is to be seen in
the luminaire support. This comes with a connection system which
makes it possible for the luminaires to be connected and replaced
with ease. To support the luminaire, grooves have to be milled in the
aluminium ring and deburred. This is where RÖHM’s PKF precision
power chucks come into their own, working with extreme delicacy
but still securely and with maximum exactitude. Two indentations on
opposite sides of the surrounding ring are milled in each workpiece.
Pneumatically operated PKF clamping chucks from RÖHM maximise flexibility and productivity.Loading and unloading of the swivel table takes place during primary processing time.
Innovative luminaire support with connecting sys-tem. Clamping without risk of deformation brings about the desired milling results.

Advantages of the pneumatically operated PKF chuck:
- Low maintenance, in view of oil mist lubrication
- Radial and axial runout accuracy < 0.003 mm
- Special clamping piston design with transmission
of force on both sides
- Operating range from 2 to 10 bar – optimises the
fi ne-tuning of the clamping force, e.g. for the clamping
of bushes and rings liable to risk of deformation
- Self-inhibiting, giving a high standard of safety in
case of pressure failure
- Long service life
- Versatile range of jaws
Then deburring is carried out with a brush. Care must be taken so
that the thin aluminium ring will not be pushed out of shape. The
automation of the entire process is currently in preparation. It should
be possible in future, if required, to dispense with human intervention
altogether.
Designing parts with the manufacturing process in mind
The project is a showcase illustration of the skills of Werder’s precision
mechanics – as in this case reliable manufacturing was not the end
of the story. The Argovian specialists initially designed the part based
on their first talks with the customer. ‘An ideal scenario,’ Stäger sa-
ys, ‘as it enabled
us to design
the workpiece
while bearing
the manufac-
turing process
in mind. That
simplifies the
production at a
later stage, and
lowers the costs
incurred by the
customer.’ And
Werder adds:
‘The sooner the
customer gets
us involved in
the process, the
better the impli-
cations for the subsequent production costs and so for the bill.’ With
almost 60 years of experience behind them, Werder’s specialists also
have the necessary equipment available. ‘And if our tailormade solu-
tion can contribute in the same way to a success story in future, we
will be willing to listen again next time round and happy to share our
experience,’ Casafina promises. Claude Werder is pleased to hear it:
‘The partnership with Röhm has turned out admirably.’ So it’s a win-
win situation all round.
The RÖHM chuck clamps the workpiece with maximum precision. The clamping force can be fine-tuned, so that even workpieces susceptible to deformation can be securely held in place.
The basic jaws with finely serrated edges and tongue and groove inter-face effect a lift of 3.2 millimetres, allowing Werder’s existing clamping jaws to be mounted on the unit.
