A great place to live, raise a family, enjoy life! Aurora is a “perfect balance” City. We decided years ago to have a balance between residential, business and industrial areas and the preservation of open space, not to be

fully developed, but to leave space for parks, recreation and leisure living. Reducing stress is what we are all about!

We offer a wonderful quality of life here. Great public schools, one of the finest in the State of Ohio, world class shopping and the charm of feeling like a small village but with services at your finger tips.

The City of Aurora is proud and delighted to partner once again with Image Builders Marketing to present the Aurora Magazine and Community Guide. In showcasing many of the people and businesses who make up our town, this unique magazine captures the essence of our community, while serving as a handy reference guide of important contact information for city services and local organizations.

This complimentary magazine, which has been mailed to every home and business in town, emphasizes the best we have to offer, including interesting profiles on some of the people who help make Aurora the wonderful community it is. Please keep it handy to share with friends, relatives and visitors. — Mayor Lynn McGill City of Aurora

in order to appreciate our bright present and future in Aurora, we must take a look at our recent past. The City of Aurora has increased in population, according to the official US Census, 70% over the past twenty years. In 1990, the population was 9,192 and today it is 15,548, a gain of 6,356. Over those 20 years, 2,702 housing units were built in the City. How did we manage this? Growing the City at that rate without major problems required skill and a plan.

When we joined Council in 1990, a plan was adopted which produced much “good fruit.” The foundation of the plan had this credo “current residents of the City have already paid for infrastructure improvements. If expanded or new infrastructure is required by a growth in the City, then the new infrastructure construction should be paid for by new businesses and new residents.” This has worked wonders within the City — we have “state-of-the-art” facilities and have not overburdened

The City of Aurora “A bright Future”

our residents with cost. In fact, our residential real estate tax of 56.12 mills is 25% (14 mills) lower than the average millage in the communities of Hudson, Solon and Chagrin Falls.

In the past ten years, serving as Mayor, we have been able to more than double our local government investment by applying for and receiving grants from Federal, State, and other agencies

for over $21 million for projects within the City. We have positioned our City well, with many new improvements, and thus expect a very bright future.

The plan includes a balance of how we develop the 16,000 acres of property within the City. Our zoning code is outstanding with residential, commercial, industrial and open space striking a great balance. The plan proposes that we not develop all the property but preserve many acres for the enjoyment of our residents. What a legacy for our present and future generations! With the acquisition of the historic Spring Hill Farm of 153 acres, our City residents now own 1,568 acres. Additionally, the State of Ohio has 880 acres and the Audubon Society owns 440 acres. A grand total of 2,888 acres are conserved and preserved in Aurora!

The City of Aurora is also in sound financial condition. We have just received the “AAA” rating from FITCH Ratings,

which is the highest rating attainable. Their rationale for the rating is:

n Conservative budgeting practices over the past ten years

n Maintenance of strong reserve levels

n City’s ability to reduce expenditures in light of declines in tax revenue

n Low debt levels and future capital needs are manageable

This is a remarkable achievement considering the current economic conditions. Over the past two years, Cleveland Magazine ranked Aurora #6 in 2009 and #5 in 2010 in their rating of the best suburbs. Certainly a strong component of the rating is the Aurora Public School System. It is ranked “Excellent with Distinction,” making it one of the top school systems in the State of Ohio. The Aurora School System continues to achieve scholastically and administer a fine public school system. Their expenditure per pupil is low compared to other schools, the number of administrators per pupil is one of the lowest in northeast Ohio and academic performance continues to reach new heights. We couldn’t be prouder of our public schools.

Is it any wonder why our population continues to grow? Great schools, sound local government, open spaces... Aurora is a great place to raise a family!

Aurora City Schools & Community:

building tomorrow togetherthe Aurora City School District, known and respected throughout the region as one of the premier school districts in the State of Ohio, has a history of high performance, coupled with low-cost and efficiency. The Ohio Department of Education has ranked the Aurora Schools 11th out of the 613 Ohio school districts in academic performance. The school district provides this top-rated educational opportunity at a relatively low cost to the Aurora community. The district was just recognized in a report by Ohio Education Matters, a subsidiary of Knowledge

Works, as efficient in their spending. Superintendent Russ Bennett said, “I’m proud to report that Aurora is one of the few districts in Ohio that was noted for their high efficiency in spending dollars.” Aurora School Board President Gerald Kohanski explained that we “spend taxpayers’ dollars efficiently and we’re proud of that.”

The district’s high academic achievement is not only directly related to the staff, administration, and volunteers in our school district, but also to the parents and Aurora community. Our community support has been instrumental in being able to achieve this success. “I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Aurora community for supporting so many initiatives that allow our school system to continue to rank as one of the top school districts in Ohio,” said Bennett. Once again, our school district earned the Ohio Department of Education’s highest ranking “Excellent with Distinction.” They have maintained the “Excellent” distinction for the past 10 years! Bennett explained

Superintendent russ bennett

that, “we could not have achieved or continue to maintain this distinction without the strong and consistent support shown by our community members.” The district was just recognized by the College Board as one of only 25 districts in Ohio for its efforts to enhance the Advanced Placement (AP) program by expanding student access to AP exams. Nationally, only 388 districts earned this recognition!

In 2008, Aurora residents once again showed their support of the school system by passing a 1.91 Mill Bond Levy for the purpose of construction and renovation of school buildings. These renovation projects included many needed improvements to the buildings. These upgrades and enhancements were completed in 2010 and introduced at a Grand Re-Opening Ceremony last year. It is the goal of the district to constantly improve the learning experience for all Aurora students. With the completion of the many new and upgraded school building

improvements, the district will be able to accommodate our growing community in a greatly enhanced and safer environment for many years to come.

A survey of community members was conducted at the end of 2010 by the Aurora Schools. This random-sample telephone survey was conducted with help from the Kent State University. In total, 322 community members made up of parents and non-parents responded to 33 questions with invaluable feedback for the district. The district received high marks from the community. This information will be used to help in the completion of the district’s five-year strategic plan. Bennett stated, “These survey results will be instrumental in helping our district place emphasis on the educational areas that the community finds important.”

The Aurora community and the Aurora City Schools have created a partnership that has culminated in numerous programs and projects that have benefited both. Senior luncheons, American Red Cross blood donation drives, charity collections, school building renovations, the Aurora High School artificial turf project, are just a few of the countless ways in which the two connect. Aurora is a unique place where the community and our schools truly are “Building Tomorrow Together.”

Aurora City Schools Superintendent, russ bennett, has chosen brian Katona as this years’ recipi-ent of the national association of secondary school principal’s Leadership award. “brian is truly an accomplished and special student. He has made an impact on our school in so many ways and he has a gift of service greater than any student i can recall in my 26 years as an educator,” expounds Superintendent bennett.

brian is a leader and a role model student at Aurora High School. He is a member of the national Honor Society and a national Merit Scholar finalist; he is an outstanding student, earning above a 4.0 GPA, and he works diligently to achieve his success. what sets brian apart from other students is that he is extremely active in many areas and he possesses a heart for service. He is engaged in numerous school and community organiza-

tions including membership in the AHS Pit orchestra for musicals, the Philharmonic orchestra, the AHS Jazz band, the French Club, Quiz bowl and the school marching band as well as many other activities in and outside of school. brian has served as the President of the national Honor Society, a mentor in the Freshman Mentor Program as well as being a member of the Key Club and the AHS leadership team.

brian’s most distinguished accomplishment is his dedication to the Aurora buddies Club. this club is an organization that helps students with special needs integrate socially into the Aurora School System. brian has been committed to providing a helping hand and heart to these students. His character is an example to all; he is humble, gracious and truly dedicated to serving others. Congratulations Brian!

AurorAM A G A z i n e l Aurora Senior Program

Building serves as the nucleus of a wide range of programming available to seniors in Aurora. Some events, such as bingo, art classes, dulcimer lessons, computer classes, book discussion groups, the knitting group and card playing are ongoing, while others, such as theme parties, and trips to area attractions vary from month-to-month. The city-owned 24 passenger recreational bus provides our seniors the opportunity to visit many interest-ing cultural points of interest in the Northeast Ohio area and beyond, such as theatre productions, lunch outings, amusement parks and the orchestra. Pre-registration is required for all trips and departure is from the parking lot of City Hall.

The Aurora Senior Program also offers a variety of exercise and wellness programs, including Tai Chi, Arthritis Foundation exercise class, Gentle Yoga, walking video, line dancing and chair volleyball. Several “Lunch and Learn” programs are scheduled throughout the year, with guest appearances by area physicians and other medical professionals. Additional speakers offer information on topics relevant to senior living. Also offered are health screenings, podiatrist visits, manicures and pedicures, massage and healthy cooking classes. There is something for everyone! The Senior Program welcomes residents and offers the opportunity to enjoy the activities of your choice with friends, old and new.

Browse the website at http://parks.auroraoh.com and click on the Senior Programs tab to view our complete schedule of activities and current newsletter. To register for activities, or for more information, contact Patty Harrington at 330-995-9148 or visit the Walker Building weekdays between 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Beautiful Music

AurorAM A G A z i n el Arts in Aurora

At the Grand opening on November 8, 2003, no one could have predicted that the Aurora School of Music would be the success that it is today. With 650 students and 30 instructors, music instruction for children as young as 3 years old, adults and music teach-ers, they have the most diverse music programs available in the Cleveland area.

“I remember telling Jennifer Natale of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce of my dream to open a music school,” states Vera Holczer, the Founder and Director. Vera’s background as a 26-year-old Hungarian pianist teaching 98 students at a time touched Jennifer’s heart. Aurora School of Music soon became a reality for Vera and received a warm welcome from residents. A town that gives its best when it comes to children, community and education combined with a music school that gives its best when it comes to teaching exceptional lifetime music standards

to students through world-class teachers, is a winning combination.

Today, ASM attracts students from the surrounding

communities of Twinsburg, Solon, Hudson, Chagrin Falls, Bainbridge, Macedonia and Streetsboro, as well as Parma, Akron, Chardon and

Cleveland Heights. It’s not only ASM that makes

commuting to Aurora so worthwhile, but also all that

our quaint town has to offer.Eight years after opening, we see public and private

schools delighted, as their orchestras and bands have great players to work with. Community Theatres select children and adults with vocal training from ASM for their shows. Colleges, universities and conservatories all over the U.S. are pleased to receive ASM’s well-prepared students with scholarship offers. Professional youth ensembles such as the Cleveland Youth Orchestra, the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony, Akron Youth

Symphony and many more have all enjoyed numerous ASM students in their groups.

Thank you Aurora! We bring you the gift of music. Now our music students are not only playing recitals, chamber music concerts, rock concerts, jazz events, summer camps and WCLV Radio broadcasts, but they also play for our local nursing homes, preschools and daycares, Aurora Community Theatre’s holiday show, Relay for Life, Mobius Nature Center, Chamber Events and City Events.

Music helps us build relationships with family, friends and the community… let’s spread the word that Aurora possesses beautiful music and will for many years to come!

Aurora Parks and Recreation offering Fun for The entire FamilyThe City of Aurora Division of Parks and recreation offers excellent programs, events and services to residents and businesses in Aurora. Their mission is to enrich the lives of individuals of all ages, families, and the community by providing a wide range of recreational programs and clean, safe parks. The Department also strives to preserve the cultural, historical and environmental resources of the City of Aurora.

Each year, over 1,100 residents participate in a variety of community education classes offered to people of all ages. Over 1,675 youth participate in sports programs including recreational soccer, basketball, flag football and summer sports camps. There are also over 1,000 runners that participate in the various runs and races held throughout the year.

In addition, the Summer Music Concert Series, July 4th activities, Truck Day, Classic Car Show and Fall Festival are just some of the many community events that help make Aurora unique and a great place to live. In 2011, the July 4th fireworks will be launched from the center of the city at the West Pioneer Trail baseball fields. This location helps reduce the costs of the event as well as provides residents and businesses many opportunities to view the show.

With over 1,250 acres of parks and natural lands owned by the City, residents have some great opportunities to enjoy fresh air, exercise, play with friends and family and experience nature.

The community garden that opened in 2010 provides over 60 residents opportunities to get their hands dirty and hopefully see

the fruits of their labor. Groups reserve pavilions or gazebos for their family

reunions, birthday parties, graduation parties or other social functions.

Based on the revised Parks and Recreation Master Plan completed in 2010, we look to continue improving programs and facilities in the next few years. Some of the these projects include improvement and expansion of the current hiking trails, a new softball field at Kiwanis-Moore Park, a multi-sport outdoor field complex at the Hartman property, a 4-season building and concession stand at Sunny Lake Park and improved volunteer opportunities.

We hope to see you at a program, event or in the park in the near future! For a specific list of programs, activities, or to make park reservations, call 330-562-4333 or check out our website at www.parks.auroraoh.com
