As Mayor of Lorain, I would like to welcome you to our great city. This year, I began my first year as Mayor. In

the few short months after taking office, we have taken steps in order to restore the image of the City of Lorain and to rebuild it. With an energized city council and a dedicated team of city employees, we are making strides in keeping Lorain safe, improving the infrastructure and housing stock, and making Lorain attractive for investment and, ultimately, sustainable growth.

In terms of safety, the dedicated and hard-working police officers of the Lorain Police Department have brought an innovative, 21st century approach to fighting crime. This approach has paid off in 2012. The Police Department has apprehended several individuals this year that were long-suspected of being a driving force of crime in our community.

Regarding infrastructure, the City is trying to leverage all the state and federal dollars available for roadway repair and rehabilitation, while also conducting a pilot program for chip and seal on some of our unimproved streets. Furthermore, the City has put forth a plan to complete 20 million dollars in roadway repair in a 2 to 3 year time frame while allocating more money to roadway maintenance. This plan’s implementation will require city voters to approve a ½ of 1% income tax increase on this November’s ballot.

With respect to our city’s housing stock, city council and I worked aggressively with Lorain County to establish a land bank, which will provide the City with more revenue and

options to deal with vacant, decrepit and abandoned houses. In addition to the land bank, the City of Lorain’s Building Department, Community Development Department and the

Health Department have joined forces to proactively cite property maintenance code violations, which have

plagued our city for years.

Lorain and its community partners are working hard to bring recreation and entertainment to the City. On the City’s lakefront, beautiful Lakeview Park, maintained by our wonderful Lorain

County MetroParks, is the premiere spot in town to view a sunset. In late June, the International

Festival, which is held every year at Black River Landing, celebrates and embraces Lorain’s rich diversity

and history with traditional dances and dishes from several nationalities.

This first annual Lorain Magazine and Community Guide will allow you to learn more about what makes Lorain special. This magazine, published in partnership with Image Builders Marketing, will serve to keep you informed about Lorain and is not published at taxpayer expense. A City Poised for GreatnessIn the 1970’s and 1980’s, Lorain was a thriving community

supported by the steel and automotive industry. But, in the 1990’s and 2000’s, those industries’ labor forces were downsized or transferred due to outsourcing and national economic downturns. Lorain suffered as the pillars of our community were not able to support the local workforce. However, in 2012 the steel and automotive industries are strengthening and the City of Lorain is poised to make a comeback.

In the first quarter of 2012, Republic Steel announced an $85 million dollar investment into its Lorain plant in order to build a new arc furnace. With this investment, Republic Steel will be able to increase its capacity by one million tons of steel per year, as well as $1 billion in economic output to northern Ohio. In order to achieve this capacity, Republic Steel will be hiring for 449 new jobs in its Lorain mill while retaining 100 jobs. Also, U.S. Steel, which has a mill in Lorain, has seen orders increase. In regards to the automotive industry, Lorain is home to Camaco, a manufacturer of metal seat frames and seatbacks. Camaco’s seat frames and seatbacks are used for the seating in cars for Ford, GM and Chrysler. With the revival of the American automotive industry, Camaco has seen a substantial increase in orders for their products. With increased demand, Camaco added 75 new employees to its payroll and a third shift to its operations.

Even as Lorain is ranked Ohio’s tenth largest city, it still appeals to those looking for a small-town feel. With recreational leagues and festivals, Lorain offers its residents activities and entertainment. The International Festival serves as the City’s featured summer event, as several thousand people visit Lorain to participate in different nationalities’ native food and dance. Lorain’s summer season is also highlighted by the Port Fest, Taste of History, the Black River Landing Concert Series

and Music Under the Stars, which is coordinated by Lorain County MetroParks at Lakeview Park. In addition to these events, “Light Up Lorain” is a magical event featuring rides, parades, stories, music, Christmas lights and fireworks. The City of Lorain has coordinated and aided several recreational leagues, such as Adult Softball, KickIt Lorain (kickball league) and Lorain Youth Baseball.

With a hopeful future, due in part to the recent successes in the steel and automotive industries and improvements in our recreational activities, Lorain is poised to make a comeback. The leadership of the City is dedicated to bringing more jobs to the area and providing new and exciting activities for the residents of Lorain by focusing on the core competencies of local government such as safety, housing and infrastructure, that ultimately drive business and investment. In doing so, the City of Lorain wants to become the destination of northeast Ohio.

Downtown Lorain... Alive and Growing!The Lorain Port Authority, the Lorain Arts Council, the Palace

Theater and the Lorain International Festival are just a few of the organizations working to lead the effort for preservation, economic sustainability, and continued evolution of the historic district as the heart of the Lorain community. Lorain’s historic

shopping district leads to the Lake Erie Waterfront with views of the iconic Lorain Lighthouse.

The Downtown district is adjacent to the Black River Landing, a beautiful riverfront

site that is home to several festivals and events, as well as the Jet Express. The

Lorain Palace Theater, which opened in 1928, continues to operate

today as a highlight of the Downtown area. The premier

summer event, the Lorain International Festival, entices residents and visitors with a week-

long festival of food and fun

International City with over 70

different nationalities residing here. The winter holidays are no exception to festivities as the community looks forward to the annual Light Up Lorain event. This phenomenal holiday program displays the most dynamic, explosive, and exciting decorations along Broadway in decades, and most likely, in the history of Lorain. In three short years, the Light Up Lorain program has become the best holiday kickoff celebration in a four county area.

Lorain has a growing interest in the arts and the Lorain Arts Council is investing in the future of Downtown Lorain, to help it grow and add to the already present variety of unique retailers and restaurants. Downtown is designated as a live/work area that encourages a creative mix of residential and commercial uses within the same space. Downtown Lorain is alive, as is evident with people moving in at the Gardens of Charleston, 28 charming condos with indoor common areas, fountains, remote chip keyed entry, underground parking and rooftop balconies, with a barbecue and hot tub area for enjoyment. Lorain’s organizations work on many projects and events to promote Downtown Lorain as a destination; a place to shop, dine, entertain, explore, or just to relax by the waterfront.

In Defense of Art

Strange title when speaking of Art but that seems to be the condition of Art these days in our area. Mankind has used the

arts to chronicle and identify itself since the beginning of man’s existence on earth, yet many people do not understand it. Art has always been many things to those who enjoy it, practice it, create it, but it has also been one of the first tools of communication. When humans did not yet have a written language, cavemen made carvings in caves they inhabited to tell their story, perhaps to leave a legacy for future generations. It appears they wanted to leave a message of their existence here on earth. Such fundamental use of art seems to be lost, forgotten in these times of crisis and economic instability. Over the centuries, the arts have given many societies identity and an understanding of self,

of who these people were. Thanks to the arts we know of the daily life, love and difficulties of past generations.

Today, in other areas, such as Tremont in Cleveland, the arts continue to prosper and bring economic stimulus to those that employ the arts to re-invent themselves. The arts, thankfully, have a following of enlightened patrons that frequent them. It would be safe to say that most of the time, communities incorporating art as a vehicle for renovation have seen a marked improvement in the level of activities within their community. That is to say, without activity such as foot traffic, few investors would consider investing in a town. Communities that make an effort to be artist-friendly have always attracted investors

who have taken the chance to open new businesses such as restaurants, upscale coffeehouses, etc. The Lorain Arts Council is one of the new businesses that are investing in this bright future of Lorain.

Antonio Barrios, President of the Lorain Arts Council, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico but grew up in Lorain after his father was recruited by National Tube Co. (US Steel) in the 1950’s. Antonio has lived all over the world, serving our country as a Marine in Vietnam, working as a fashion model in NYC and Europe (for over 20 years), studying & teaching photography as well as learning the art of film/videography in Rome, Italy. Today Antonio has his own photography/video company called FrameWorks in Lorain and his latest vision is to help and give back to the town that raised him by creating a giant Mural Project to bring visitors and tourists to downtown. Downtown’s Dazzling Focal Point

For over eight decades the Lorain Palace Theater has been a gathering place for the community hosting first and second

run movies, performance arts, live theater, and community events bringing thousands of people to downtown Lorain every year.

From 1944 on, the Palace was almost exclusively a movie theater. It gradually suffered the same decline of other entertainment palaces around the country, but one thing was different….Lorain’s Palace never closed. With the threatened demolition of the Palace Theater, the Civic

Committee felt this historic building could and will always be the focal point for the “rebirth” of downtown Lorain.

In 2011 the Palace Theater upgraded to 3D digital technology. This year the exterior of the Palace has undergone renovations to preserve the facade of terra cotta and elaborately cut stone, while the inside, reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance, has been restored and enhanced. Both the inner and outer lobbies boast ornate sculptured ceilings elegantly painted in soft shades of turquoise and coral, and highlighted in gold. The graceful domed ceiling of the main auditorium features an exquisite three-quarter ton crystal chandelier.

Today the Palace Theater is a state-of-the-art digital 3D movie theater with the largest near I-MAX screen in Ohio hosting first and second run movies, national touring musical, comedy, and live theatrical acts, while still preserving the community civic center that our forefathers intended – family-friendly entertainment at low prices that is accessible to all.

The students in Jami Little’s Business Management class, with help from their Junior Achievement volunteer, Angela Anderson-Greiner from Key Bank, wrote a book, The History of Lorain City Schools. The book was originally started by a group of people from the Black River Historical Society. The students finished writing the book and published it. The book was the main product the students sold as part of their Junior Achievement company, Titan Enterprise. The students also sold travel mugs, calendars, and videos, and they held an event, “Showcase of the Past, at Black River Landing” in April for the book’s premiere.

The Lorain City School District continues to build on its tradition of community and excellence to be the school

of choice for the children of Lorain. Multiple academic and extracurricular opportunities provide a well-balanced curriculum to a diverse student population.

Student OpportunitiesThrough a rich and varied curriculum, many options are available to prepare our students for success. Academic, college readiness, vocational and special needs coursework are the building blocks for developing the citizens of tomorrow. The Gifted Program offers a challenging and supportive environment for students in second through sixth grades. Lorain High school students can earn college credits via Advanced Placement and Post Secondary Enrollment Options, as well as enroll in College and Professional Pathway programs that offer work experience in conjunction with core classes. The Early College High School located on the campus of LCCC provides a unique opportunity for students to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and an associate degree. An after school program offering academic enrichment and recreation programming is available at no charge to students attending all district elementary and middle schools and Lorain High School. These programs offer students additional academic support, as well as character education, health and fitness activities, and mentoring.

FacilitiesLorain citizens were one of the first communities to approve a building program in conjunction with the Ohio School Facilities Commission. Over the past decade, the district has replaced all elementary and middle schools with state-of-the-art, technology-rich, and environment-friendly buildings. Extensive planning and management resulted in projects being built on time and under budget. In October 2012, the district will be awarded the “Chairman’s Sustainability Award” from Energy Ed.

The final phase of the building project begins in the fall of 2012. A groundbreaking ceremony is being anticipated for the new Lorain High School that will be built on the site of the former Lorain Admiral King High School. With a current projected completion date of 2015, the students of Lorain will be attending

Financial ResponsibilityThe 2012-13 school year brings many changes to the district, and securing additional funding for the district is a priority. With a commitment to fiscal responsibility, consolidating schools and reducing expenditures to increase efficiencies have been implemented. The cost reduction plan will continue to demonstrate to the community that we are using our dollars wisely.

Community Engagement/PartnershipsLorain City Schools is committed to engaging the community in the coming years. A Five-Year Strategic Plan process will begin this year; and parents, community members, business leaders, and staff will be invited to participate to set the course for our schools. The district is reaching to businesses, community organizations, civic organizations and social agencies to work together for the betterment of the community.

With a busy year planned, LCS is committed to transparency and engagement of the community. The key to our success is having all partners collaborating and working together for the children. We invite and encourage everyone to be part of the process.

Using computer-controlled cooling units, specially trained physicians and nurses slowly lower the body temperature of cardiac arrest patients to 89-93 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of 24 hours. This process helps slow down their metabolism, thus reducing further damage to tissue. Approved and recommended by the American Heart Association, Therapeutic Hypothermia has been shown to help patients retain neurological function after a cardiac event. New Life HospiceSupport and Guidance for Families

After the Death of a Loved OneHospice…it can be among the most misunderstood aspects

Despite a recovering economy, house prices and sales are rising. According to the National Association of Realtors,

home sales increased more than 2% in July and more than 10% as compared with 2011.

Ohio sales increased more than 13% in July, making it the 13th consecutive month with a home sales surge. Howard Hanna Real Estate Services has seen this trend during our summer months. June closed home sales volume was $816 million, the highest ever in the company’s 55-year history.

Additionally, there is an increase of average home prices up 4% in Northeastern Ohio over 2011, according to Howard “Hoddy” Hanna, III. “Our first-time buyer segment continues to be extremely strong,” added Hanna. “The increase in rental prices over the past three years, and all-time low interest rates continue to encourage the first-time buyer to purchase a home rather than rent.”

Newest MetroParks’ FacilitySlated to Open in January

Lorain County MetroParks will unveil its newest facility, the Mercy Recreation and Health Center, in January! The

facility, located at 47160 Hollstein Drive in Amherst, will provide Lorain County residents more access to recreational activities.

Mercy Recreation and Health Center, a 50,000 sq. ft. facility, will feature aquatics and dry land activities. The aquatics portion of the building will house an 8-lane swimming pool and slide, observation deck, therapy pool, birthday party room and locker rooms. Dry land offerings include aerobics activity, spinning, a 3-lane walking track, and more than 50 pieces of nautilus equipment. The facility will also include a multi-purpose room, cafe and sensory room for children with disabilities. Throughout the country, hospitals and park systems have collaborated to build and operate recreation facilities. Recreation centers are often busiest in the early morning hours and in the evenings after 5 p.m. and weekends. Mercy Health Systems will offer a full range of rehabilitation, occupational and therapy services. Mercy patients will utilize the facility during the “down time” (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Memberships to the Mercy Recreation and Health Center are as low as $33.33 per month. Lorain County residents can opt for an annual or 3-month membership. In addition, anyone can upgrade their membership with a fitness package. Water and land fitness classes will be offered by Fit For Life instructors, Mercy professionals, and Lorain County Metro Parks. Swimming lessons will also be available for members and non-members. Safety FirstThe Lorain Fire Department has been serving the citizens of the City of Lorain since March 22, 1883. Currently the Lorain Fire Department protects Lorain’s 65,000 citizens, covering 24.3 square miles. The mission statement of the department is: “To protect the lives, property, and environment of the citizens of the City of Lorain from fire and other emergencies.”This mission is accomplished by the 82 members of the fire department who respond from four stations. This approach has led to highly effective fire response times and high levels of service for a wide variety of emergencies. The Fire Department is led by a fire chief, three assistant chiefs, three captains, and twelve lieutenants. The fire prevention bureau consists of the fire marshal and a fire investigator, and the training division is administered by the training officer.The Lorain Fire Department continually strives to be an efficient and effective department while providing the highest level of service that is possible for the citizens of Lorain. Lakeview ParkA day at the beach is one of the best ways to enjoy beautiful

Lake Erie! Lakeview Park Beach, Lorain County MetroParks’ first lakeside recreational park, offers 20 acres along the north side of West Erie Avenue in the City of Lorain. This nearby neighborhood park is known for its historical rose garden, spectacular sunsets and views of the Lorain Lighthouse. Visitors of all ages can participate in a wide variety of recreational opportunities, from swimming and sunbathing to lawn bowling, beach volleyball, picnicking, and much more. Amenities include: a sand beach, bath house/changing rooms, snack bar, lifeguards, restrooms, showers, picnic areas, grills, picnic shelter and gazebo available to reserve, playground equipment and seasonal recreational sports leagues.

The Rose Garden at Lakeview Park was originally dedicated on May 30, 1932. Seventeen community organizations, including

the Lorain Rotary Club, sponsored the garden. The shape of the garden is of the Rotary Club emblem, a wheel with 8 spokes. Approximately 2,500 roses are planted in 48 beds with connecting walkways.

Located next to the historic rose garden, the Rose Café at Lakeview Beach is Lorain’s newest jewel on the lake. Visitors are invited to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner along with a spectacular view of Lake Erie. The Café is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 8pm with Sunday Brunch from 10am to 2pm. The Café may be reserved some nights for private parties so call ahead if you plan to enjoy dinner at the Café at 440-245-7673. The Café closes at 2pm during winter hours and is completely closed in January and February.

The Lorain International Festival and Bazaar is the premier event of the summer for Lorain, Ohio. The week-long festival begins the last full week of June every year, with numerous separate events taking place in the downtown Lorain area. Various nationalities, cultures and our community are celebrated with the sharing of gifts from our many homelands through food, music, costume and tradition.The three-day bazaar takes place along the scenic Black River and features a multitude of foods with a wide variety of ethnic cuisine to sample. There is also entertainment throughout the weekend, including on-going live performances. Stop by the different cultural booths that feature crafts and items from many homelands.
