From The Editor Firstly for those of you who like your football, wasn’t the World Cup great? Even with England failing to get out of their group (which my dad correctly predicted would happen back in March) the tournament threw up wonderful moments. Germany thoroughly deserved to win and could dominate the world-game for quite a while. The Wayland Players are starting to plan for their next production. Play-Readings are taking place on August 5th and 12th. Coming up in July is the Butterfly Conservation’s ‘Big Butterfly Count’ survey, which takes place between 19th July—10th August. AUGUST: THE BOY TOM I recon when yu are a readin this them old combines will be a’goin. I hev seen one a’goin already (2nd week July) but that were cuttin sum oil seed rape. When thas ready they’ll be a gettin inta the winter barley and arter that the wheat. I hev been asked how farmers know when the corn is ready t’cut. Fustly that ha’a changed colour from green to gold/yella all the way t’the ground, then yu should be able t’rub the grains outa the head by hand und check that the grain is hard by a biting it with yar teeth. Yu ha’a be suffin careful a doin this cos yu can break a tooth; I did several year ago. Afor the com-bine go the farmers test that the moisture level hev dropped down to 16% or lower, any higher than this und they ha’a start the crop old drier up und that’ll cost money. Years ago yu could tell when barley were gettin fit cos when the grains in the head became hard und dry the weight would bend the grain head over und this action would cause the neck to break or crack. On a still warm day yu could stand a’side a field o’barley und hear the necks o’barley a crackin over. There hev bin a’lot in the pearper und on the TV leatly about parents bein fined for takin their younguns outa school durin term time. I were a talkin to my Brother about that tuther day und we recon that would a’cost our Father a lot o’money hed that rule been in when we were at school. Cos we always hed a family holiday afor harvest started we recon that we hardly ever attended the last week o’the summer term. Another thing our Father said was “allus to go away when yu on holiday cos if yun don’t they’ll cum arter yu for suffin”. Once years leater when I were a Farm Foreman I started my holiday on the Saturday morning but did not go away. About 11 o’clock on the Saturday night the Boss rung up sayin there were a cow a calvin with twins und could I go und help the vet get um out. Acoos I went und helped. At about 2am on the Sunday morning while I were still a’helpin I remembered what my Father hed said. I hev been a watchin the World Cup football. I got suffin savage when I saw then play-ers a rolling about pretendin their hurt. I say t’the Missus “ they want t’be kicked by an old Highland Cow, that’ll meake um roll about a’bit”. The trouble is the younguns see um a’doin that und copy um when they play. The Missus und I hev bin to the Hampton Court Flower Show. We hed bin a thingkin about a goin to the Chelsea Flower Show but the Missus recon,if we went, she’d see if she could leave me there with them old Chelsea Pensioners. We hed a good look round at the Hampton Court Show. My hart they must’a spent a rare lot o’time a gettin them gardens & plants ready. I hed a good look but I could unt see a weed any where. They were showing a master crop of vegetables on one o’the outside plots which hant bin attacked by pigeons or slugs. We din’t buy anything cos if we did the Missus would ha wanted t’buy one o’them little barra things to cart the plants around in all day: the only colour they did um in were pink Fare ye well t’gether und du yu keep a’troshin.

Thank you to all who helped, provided for, or supported our Carbrooke Village Festival, inspite of the weather, we all had a great, community time together and over £1500 was raised between the different organisations taking part. ‘Carbrooke Young Believers worked hard as usual at putting on a lovely play and running the service on Sunday 29th. The weekend ended in much needed sunshine – (although a little late!) and ‘Songs of Praise,’ with our favourite hymns chosen by the congregation. Breckland Council is calling on local artists to get in touch to take part in the 2014 Breckland Art Trail. Following the success of the 2012 and 2013 Trails Breckland Communities Officer, Sam Patel, has started work on the 2014 event to recruit local artists and create a class and demonstration programme - a new edition to the art trail this year. Last year saw a fantastic range of exhibits on show from over 70 local artists including paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, textiles and sculpture; organisers are hoping for a similar range this year. With 850 visitors calling in at studios and exhibition spaces over the nine days in 2013, resulting on over £4,500 worth of art sales, being part of the Trail last year was very worthwhile for participating artists. One artist commented that the Trail had brought her more visitors than Norfolk Open Studios and that most of her visitors were planning to visit all the venues in the leaflet. Breckland-based artists have until 26 August to get in touch with Sam to find out more and to register to take part. Although Breckland will publicise the event by producing and distributing a brochure featuring all participating artists, the onus is on participating artists to promote the Trail and their work. The dates of the Trail are 8 - 16 November 2014. Artists who are interested in taking part should email [email protected] to request a registration form. Message From Carbrooke Parish Council: At July's Parish Council meeting we said goodbye to our clerk Tom Thurston who has provided us with excellent support over the past 3 years. Tom is retiring and is hoping to spend a lot more time with his camera! To help him on his way the Council presented him with a voucher to spend at the Norwich Camera store WEX. We were also joined at the meeting by our new Clerk Frances Needham – one of her first jobs was to take this photograph for us!

Review of the year at St Peter and St Paul CE VC School By Courtney, Ezara and Hannah (Year 6)

St. Peter and St. Paul CE VC Primary School are proud to present to you the thrilling events we have witnessed this year! From Community greetings to school athletic record beatings, we have had pleasure every step of the way. Enjoy! First up, we shall explain which Values have guided us through the year: Courage, Respect, Compassion and Hope. Courage taught us to not hold back with being the best we can be, giving us confidence for our path that lays ahead. Respect helped with treating everyone how they themselves would like to be treated; our Golden Rule. Compassion set us on track with being polite to others and helping others out. Last but not least, we have Hope, talking about the fact that there is a light at the end of every tunnel. Twinning with Bakoteh Lower Annex School in Gambia, definitely was one of the highlights too! We’ve had generous gifts sent to us from the twinning school about what it is like to live there. Did you know that they grow fantastic fruits, such as mangoes and bananas? Well, if not, you do now… From the exciting trip to Eaton Vale to travelling back in time to Gressenhall, the Year Fives had enjoyed just about everything that entered their classroom. At Eaton Vale, they experi-enced abseiling on the 7 metre tower, even some people tried out the 10 metre tower! Most of the Year Fives enjoyed it; others were just a little scared of the height. When the Year Fives started paddling on the river, the two instructors, Alex and Aaron, kept on splashing them with water, which they called ‘liquid encouragement.’ Moving away from adventurous school trips and onto the World War 2 trip to Gressenhall; imagine a day as a World War Two evacuee, because that’s what the Year Fives did on Wednesday the 14th of May, this year. They even got to dress up! Before any of these fun events, there was an exciting occurrence here at St. Peter and St. Paul Primary School. As one of the Year Two’s topic they got to have 5 extra cute ducklings in their classroom. It wasn’t just the Year Twos that got the ducklings; every class got a peek of the ducklings. Having the ducklings in the school brought a warm smile on everybody’s face. From this year, the Reception’s favourite part of their big step into primary school, is actu-ally the start of their school life when they could make new friends. Another thing is, going on their class trip to Banham Zoo. They met lots of different wildlife on that trip. To con-clude the Reception’s highlight of the year is that they basically enjoyed all of this year. As well as the Year Fives going to Eaton Vale the Year Six’s joined them. The Year Six’s accompanied the year Fives on the trip to London as well. Seeing the Crown Jewels pleased both of the classes. They represented our school perfectly. There were Beefeaters as well! All over this year, many of things and people entered and exited each classroom filling our heads full of important information for next year. Soon we will be saying goodbye to our wonderful Year Six’s. Each and every one of us over this year has had their ups-and-downs but over all we all have had wondrous fun!

Minutes of the Annual Carbrooke Parish Council held on Monday 14th July 2014 in Carbrooke Village Hall

Present:: D Muller (Chairperson) S Dunn, J Nind, E Buscall, P Sampher, N Webster, M Wormall. Also present. F Needham (Parish Clerk) J Rogers (District Councillor) There were no members of the general public present. 1) Apologies: None. 2) Declaration of Interests: Councillors Nind, Sampher & Wormall; any matters relating to Blenheim Grange 3) New Parish Clerk: It was agreed to appoint Frances Needham as Parish Clerk. It was also agreed to appoint Frances Needham as the Parish Council’s representative in dealings with the solicitor AshtonKCJ. The meeting was suspended whilst a pres-entation was made to the retiring clerk Tom Thurston. 4) Minutes of meeting held on June 9th 2014: It was resolved to approve these minutes as a true & correct record of what took place at the meeting. The minutes were duly signed. 5) Matters Arising: Parking area dispute on Blenheim Grange - Councillor Wormall reported that the resident has spoken to Taylor Wimpey who will be writing to all parties to explain the situation. If the situation is not resolved by this, the Parish Council could offer to mediate between the parties involved. Defibrillator - Councillor Muller will contact the school to discus the siting and fund-ing of a defibrillator. Dog bins at Blenhiem Grange - Councillor Sampher reported that the dog bins have been put in place and are now in use. 6) Suspension of meeting for Public Interest: No members of the public present. 7) Planning Applications: None. 8) Correspondence: Service Agreement from Veoila with new charges. AGREED to renew contract. Councillor Muller has been informed of notices placed on the bins saying they are for use by the Village Hall only. It was agreed the clerk will write to the Village Hall committee to remind them that the Parish Council have just signed a new contract and pay for the bins for the use of the village hall, Millenium Green and Pre-School.

Invoice for £600 from Ashton KCJ. Councillor Muller has forwarded the invoice to Taylor Wimpey who, with Oasis, are paying the legal costs associated with the land at Blenheim Grange.

10) Blenheim Grange Update, (Heads of Terms & Play Area Equipment): Meeting. George Freeman will be holding a meeting at Blenheim Grange on Friday 19th Sep-tember, 2.30-3.30pm which will look at all the recent issues associated with the estate. The following will be attending: SureStart, Mathew Project, church repre-sentatives, the police. George Freeman will be inviting Taylor Wimpey. Councillor Sampher will invite the EDP. Councillor Muller will attend for the Parish Council. George Freeman will be setting the agenda and chairing. He will send the draft agenda to Councillor Sampher who will circulate it to all councillors for their com-ments.

Summer events - Various events are planned at Blenheim Grange for the summer including a picnic on 19th July, a fete on 30th August, a library book treasure hunt and possibly some SureStart activities

11) Representatives Reports: Village Hall Committee - The AGM has been held, new trustees have been appointed and officers will be elected at the next meeting.

Millennium Green - Councillor Webster reported he would be meeting with Alun Gibbs to sort out tools for maintaining the paths.

Village School - Councillor Sampher reported that the school is going to become an Academy as part of the Diocese Academies Trust. The school would like to thank the Parish Council, Millenium Green and village hall committee for their help with the circus visit.

attended and the deregistration of patients from the Watton surgery was discussed, particularly the lack of consultation, lack of clarity and poor communication. Breck-land Council is having a meeting on 16th July about this issue. District Councillor Rogers said that part of the problem with Doctor recruitment at Watton surgery stemmed from issues with to do management of the practice Pre-school - Councillor Nind reported that there are plans for work on the pre-school garden/playground over the summer holidays. Funds need to be raised and volun-teers found. Councillor Nind has advised the pre-school to advertise in NPN for prac-tical and artistic help. Patronal weekend - Councillor Dunn reported that the Patronal weekend went well despite the poor weather. District Councillor Rogers reported that everyone now needs to register individually to be eligible to vote. 12) Future Agenda Items: The clerk will write to Bob Tash of Oasis to ask for an up-date on the open spaces at Blenhiem Grange, particularly the trees, and to ask him to attend a PC meeting. Carbrooke Heritage Group

At our last meeting on 9th July, we were delighted that Betty Roberts (nee Page) joined us. Betty was born in Carbrooke in 1926 at Caudle Springs Farm, where her father was a tenant farmer. Her mother’s family lived at the other end of Carbrooke, at what is now Bullens Farm, but was then called Broadmoor Farm, (there were 2 Broadmoor Farms!).

Daniel Bullen, Norfolk’s oldest working farmer who we have mentioned before, was Bettys Great Grandfather. Daniel is seen here pictured on his 100th birthday, in 1949, with Janet Rodgers, who is believed to have been Betty’s daughter Although Betty moved away from Carbrooke aged 2, as her father took up farming positions at Breckles, Tottington and Merton, she continued to visit Carbrooke and Broadmoor farm. Betty told us of her Carbrooke memories and what the village was like in former times. We would love to hear from anyone else who also has memories of Carbrooke.

Wayland Heritage Project has received funding for a World War 1 project covering the effects of WW1 on the whole of the Wayland area. This will be launched by an event and display at Watton Christian Community Centre on 4th August. We are in-vited to bring along any WW1 memorabilia, photos or stories, which do not neces-sarily have to be local at this stage. On Wednesday 10th September, Helen Riley will be giving another fascinating talk entitled ‘Carbrooke Commanderie and the Knights Hospitallers’. This will be at 2pm in the Church, for anyone who was unable to attend the last one, or who prefers a daytime event. All welcome. No charge Next meeting: Wednesday 3RD September 7pm in the Church. A MESSAGE FROM TREETOTS PLAYGROUP After an exceptionally busy summer term, Treetots Playgroup is currently on 'Summer Leave'. We had an amazing trip to The Dinosaur Park at Lenwade to end the term and reinforce our knowledge of Dinosaurs. Special thanks must go to Ian Forkes and Calvin Potter at Semmence Coaches for providing the coaches at a reduced rate, and for Lee Ketteringham and Ray Ketteringham for donating their time free of charge to drive the coaches there and back.

Without such generosity, it is doubtful that our trip would have gone ahead. We must also thank Adcocks in Watton for donating a new flat screen TV and DVD player to the setting. It is heart warming to know that in a small community such as ours, community sprit lives on. Treetots will be holding an Open Day on Tuesday, September 2nd from 1030 until 1400, why not pop along and see what we have on offer for you and your child? We are registered for 2 year old funding as well as 3 and 4 year old funding. Our OFSTED rating is 'good' and we have a qualified and experienced staff team. Message From Blenheim Residents Association Three dog wait bins have now been up up on the Bleinham grange. By now you should have all see the new red dog bin around the estate. We would like to say a bid thank you to Cabrooke Parish Council for agreeing to pay a private company to empty them. Thanks also go to the Blenheim Residents Assocation for donating £100 and to Taylor Wimpey for donating £100 and agreeing to put them up. The bins are located: 1 on the green opposite the Taylor Wimpey sales office. 1 Near the Play Area & 1 next to the Cabin on the main road up the estate. A reminder for all local residents that it is an offence to not clean up after you dog. Plus it’s harmful to the children and can cause illness. So please bin your dog mess!

Watton Radio Model Club, Celebrating 40 Years, 1974 – 2014

Back in 1974, a group of like minded flyers, got together and formed the Watton Radio Model Club. They flew on the Griston side of Watton Airfield, thus the name. Eventually access was made difficult due to glider flying, so in 1995. the Club leased a 3 acre field off the Carbrooke/Shipdham road.

The Club grew very quickly and soon had a membership of over 90! So a further field was sought, and in 2006 we adopted a second field, this time between Car-brooke and Ovington. During the summer between 6.00pm and 8.00pm on Tuesday evenings, we hold training courses for beginners and for those who may have got 'rusty' due to their commitments in the recent past We provide the models, fuel, transmitters, buddy-box and instructors – all for £2.00 per flight!! On Wednesdays, and into the evening there are usually experienced flyers available to help those who have their own models. We can also offer advice on the type of model that is most suitable for training and good advice is always available at our local model shop here in Watton (talk to Ian or Chris, two of our members). Hobby Stores 01953 884665. We are affiliated to the British Model Flying Association who provide insurance cover and a host of other benefits for a very reasonable sum and it is a condition of our Club membership that everyone is a member of the BMFA. Weather permitting, there is flying most weekends, after which we have our own 'in house' BBQ vendor, and for a small fee you can stay for tea!!! We have special events throughout the summer, BBQ day, Fly for Fun day and Scale day. Regular Club meetings are held on the field during the summer, and in the local village hall during the winter months. A big THANKYOU to everyone who supported my charity open garden in aid of Encephalitis. We raised an amazing £375 which would not have been possible without my fantastic volunteers that helped make the day run smoothly.

The quality and quantity of homemade cakes that were donated was truly unbelievable and we had lots left over so decided to take them to the local care homes to enjoy with their cup of tea! Also, I would like to thank the people who generously gave items to sell or raffle and Zafran in Watton who kindly donated a voucher. Last, but definitely not least, the visitors who weathered our great British summer weather to make the day a great success. THANKYOU

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE CARBROOKE VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE AT 7.30pm on Tues 1st July 2014

Those present: 15 people were present Apologies for absence: Gemma Long ,David Thomas, Angela Weatherill & Johnathan Fowler Minutes of the AGM held on 21st May 2013: were distributed, agreed as a correct record and signed by the outgoing chairman. Minutes of the EGM held on the 20th August 2013: were distributed, agreed as a correct record and signed by the outgoing chairman. Chairman’s Report: John Fowler reported that he had become a trustee at the EGM because he was concerned that the hall was about to close. He listed the improvements that had been made including the installation of a new central heating and hot water system , full insulation of the roof space ,renovation of the bar area and a committee room . The purchase of a TV and licence allowed users to plug in laptop computers and smart phones . He listed future projects and concluded by saying there was a possible new hall at Blenheim Grange but hoped the existing hall will continue be in use for the whole village community. The full report will be filed with the minutes of the meeting. Brian Wells and Richard Dunn both thanked John for all the hard work he has put into the hall since becoming chairman. Financial report: John Fowler reporting for the Treasurer gave the bank balances at September 2013 as Community accounts £1,668.72p, Business saver account £7267.55p. Heritage Group: Brian Wells read to the meeting another report from Angela Weatherill stating that the group met every one to two months and had stated logging the footpaths in conjunction with the UEA. They were working with the Wayland heri-tage group on the effect of WW1 and would like to here about stories or anecdotes. Watton Radio Model Club: Brian Wells reported that an email from David Thomas had said that they wished to continue the monthly meetings in the hall for the Autumn and asked for details of the costs.

Martial Arts: John Fowler said that they have 2 clubs , Juniors at 3.30pm and Seniors at 6.30pm with a total of about 40 members . The group sometimes uses the hall on a Saturday morning . They welcome new members from 4years to 65 years old. They also run self defence classes . Bar: Guy Reynolds stated that the bar now has an efficient stock check in place and the present profit margin is about 40%. There is now a regular pipe cleaning regime in place . He said if Friday evenings were not better attended they may not be able to take place every week. Millennium Green: Nigel Webster reporting said that the recent visit by the circus had not been without problems , resulting from the short 14 day notice that had been re-ceived . He said that the group would continue to maintain the green . He thanked John Fowler for installing the additional dog waste bins . Dance Club: Brian Wells said that the recent article in the EDP had resulted in a few more members but its future was not secure , more members would be very welcome . Pre-School: Mel Findon thanked the hall committee and John for the installation of the central heating and hot water system . Their event at the recent Village Patronal day had raised £600. During the summer vacation they hoped to redecorate the hall and have an achievement tree painted at the back of the stage and construct a free flow garden at the rear of the hall . A MESSAGE FROM TREETOTS PLAYGROUP After an exceptionally busy summer term, Treetots Playgroup is currently on 'Summer Leave'. We had an amazing trip to The Dinosaur Park at Lenwade to end the term and reinforce our knowledge of Dinosaurs. Special thanks must go to Ian Forkes and Calvin Potter at Semmence Coaches for providing the coaches at a reduced rate, and for Lee Ketteringham and Ray Ketteringham for donating their time free of charge to drive the coaches there and back.

Without such generosity, it is doubtful that our trip would have gone ahead. We must also thank Adcocks in Watton for donating a new flat screen TV and DVD player to the setting. It is heart warming to know that in a small community such as ours, community sprit lives on. Treetots will be holding an Open Day on Tuesday, September 2nd from 1030 until 1400, why not pop along and see what we have on offer for you and your child? We are registered for 2 year old funding as well as 3 and 4 year old funding. Our OFSTED rating is 'good' and we have a qualified and experienced staff team. Carbrooke Heritage Group

At our last meeting on 9th July, we were delighted that Betty Roberts (nee Page) joined us. Betty was born in Carbrooke in 1926 at Caudle Springs Farm, where her father was a tenant farmer. Her mother’s family lived at the other end of Carbrooke, at what is now Bullens Farm, but was then called Broadmoor Farm, (there were 2 Broadmoor Farms!).

Daniel Bullen, Norfolk’s oldest working farmer who we have mentioned before, was Bettys Great Grandfather. Daniel is seen here pictured on his 100th birthday, in 1949, with Janet Rodgers, who is believed to have been Betty’s daughter Although Betty moved away from Carbrooke aged 2, as her father took up farming positions at Breckles, Tottington and Merton, she continued to visit Carbrooke and Broadmoor farm. Betty told us of her Carbrooke memories and what the village was like in former times. We would love to hear from anyone else who also has memories of Carbrooke.

Wayland Heritage Project has received funding for a World War 1 project covering the effects of WW1 on the whole of the Wayland area. This will be launched by an event and display at Watton Christian Community Centre on 4th August. We are in-vited to bring along any WW1 memorabilia, photos or stories, which do not neces-sarily have to be local at this stage. On Wednesday 10th September, Helen Riley will be giving another fascinating talk entitled ‘Carbrooke Commanderie and the Knights Hospitallers’. This will be at 2pm in the Church, for anyone who was unable to attend the last one, or who prefers a daytime event. All welcome. No charge Next meeting: Wednesday 3RD September 7pm in the Church. attended and the deregistration of patients from the Watton surgery was discussed, particularly the lack of consultation, lack of clarity and poor communication. Breck-land Council is having a meeting on 16th July about this issue. District Councillor Rogers said that part of the problem with Doctor recruitment at Watton surgery stemmed from issues with to do management of the practice Pre-school - Councillor Nind reported that there are plans for work on the pre-school garden/playground over the summer holidays. Funds need to be raised and volun-teers found. Councillor Nind has advised the pre-school to advertise in NPN for prac-tical and artistic help. Patronal weekend - Councillor Dunn reported that the Patronal weekend went well despite the poor weather. District Councillor Rogers reported that everyone now needs to register individually to be eligible to vote. 12) Future Agenda Items: The clerk will write to Bob Tash of Oasis to ask for an up-date on the open spaces at Blenhiem Grange, particularly the trees, and to ask him to attend a PC meeting. The following will be attending: SureStart, Mathew Project, church repre-sentatives, the police. George Freeman will be inviting Taylor Wimpey. Councillor Sampher will invite the EDP. Councillor Muller will attend for the Parish Council. George Freeman will be setting the agenda and chairing. He will send the draft agenda to Councillor Sampher who will circulate it to all councillors for their com-ments.

Summer events - Various events are planned at Blenheim Grange for the summer including a picnic on 19th July, a fete on 30th August, a library book treasure hunt and possibly some SureStart activities

11) Representatives Reports: Village Hall Committee - The AGM has been held, new trustees have been appointed and officers will be elected at the next meeting.

Millennium Green - Councillor Webster reported he would be meeting with Alun Gibbs to sort out tools for maintaining the paths.

Village School - Councillor Sampher reported that the school is going to become an Academy as part of the Diocese Academies Trust. The school would like to thank the Parish Council, Millenium Green and village hall committee for their help with the circus visit.

F Needham (Parish Clerk) J Rogers (District Councillor) There were no members of the general public present. 1) Apologies: None. 2) Declaration of Interests: Councillors Nind, Sampher & Wormall; any matters relating to Blenheim Grange 3) New Parish Clerk: It was agreed to appoint Frances Needham as Parish Clerk. It was also agreed to appoint Frances Needham as the Parish Council’s representative in dealings with the solicitor AshtonKCJ. The meeting was suspended whilst a pres-entation was made to the retiring clerk Tom Thurston. 4) Minutes of meeting held on June 9th 2014: It was resolved to approve these minutes as a true & correct record of what took place at the meeting. The minutes were duly signed. 5) Matters Arising: Parking area dispute on Blenheim Grange - Councillor Wormall reported that the resident has spoken to Taylor Wimpey who will be writing to all parties to explain the situation. If the situation is not resolved by this, the Parish Council could offer to mediate between the parties involved. Defibrillator - Councillor Muller will contact the school to discus the siting and fund-ing of a defibrillator. Review of the year at St Peter and St Paul CE VC School By Courtney, Ezara and Hannah (Year 6)

St. Peter and St. Paul CE VC Primary School are proud to present to you the thrilling events we have witnessed this year! From Community greetings to school athletic record beatings, we have had pleasure every step of the way. Enjoy! First up, we shall explain which Values have guided us through the year: Courage, Respect, Compassion and Hope. Courage taught us to not hold back with being the best we can be, giving us confidence for our path that lays ahead. Respect helped with treating everyone how they themselves would like to be treated; our Golden Rule. Compassion set us on track with being polite to others and helping others out. Last but not least, we have Hope, talking about the fact that there is a light at the end of every tunnel. Twinning with Bakoteh Lower Annex School in Gambia, definitely was one of the highlights too! We’ve had generous gifts sent to us from the twinning school about what it is like to live there. Did you know that they grow fantastic fruits, such as mangoes and bananas? Well, if not, you do now… From the exciting trip to Eaton Vale to travelling back in time to Gressenhall, the Year Fives had enjoyed just about everything that entered their classroom. At Eaton Vale, they experi-enced abseiling on the 7 metre tower, even some people tried out the 10 metre tower! Most of the Year Fives enjoyed it; others were just a little scared of the height. When the Year Fives started paddling on the river, the two instructors, Alex and Aaron, kept on splashing them with water, which they called ‘liquid encouragement.’ Moving away from adventurous school trips and onto the World War 2 trip to Gressenhall; imagine a day as a World War Two evacuee, because that’s what the Year Fives did on Wednesday the 14th of May, this year. They even got to dress up! Before any of these fun events, there was an exciting occurrence here at St. Peter and St. Paul Primary School. As one of the Year Two’s topic they got to have 5 extra cute ducklings in their classroom. It wasn’t just the Year Twos that got the ducklings; every class got a peek of the ducklings. Having the ducklings in the school brought a warm smile on everybody’s face. From this year, the Reception’s favourite part of their big step into primary school, is actu-ally the start of their school life when they could make new friends. Another thing is, going on their class trip to Banham Zoo. They met lots of different wildlife on that trip. To con-clude the Reception’s highlight of the year is that they basically enjoyed all of this year. As well as the Year Fives going to Eaton Vale the Year Six’s joined them. The Year Six’s accompanied the year Fives on the trip to London as well. Seeing the Crown Jewels pleased both of the classes. They represented our school perfectly. There were Beefeaters as well! All over this year, many of things and people entered and exited each classroom filling our heads full of important information for next year. Soon we will be saying goodbye to our wonderful Year Six’s. Each and every one of us over this year has had their ups-and-downs but over all we all have had wondrous fun!

Breckland Council is calling on local artists to get in touch to take part in the 2014 Breckland Art Trail. Following the success of the 2012 and 2013 Trails Breckland Communities Officer, Sam Patel, has started work on the 2014 event to recruit local artists and create a class and demonstration programme - a new edition to the art trail this year. Last year saw a fantastic range of exhibits on show from over 70 local artists including paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, textiles and sculpture; organisers are hoping for a similar range this year. With 850 visitors calling in at studios and exhibition spaces over the nine days in 2013, resulting on over £4,500 worth of art sales, being part of the Trail last year was very worthwhile for participating artists. One artist commented that the Trail had brought her more visitors than Norfolk Open Studios and that most of her visitors were planning to visit all the venues in the leaflet. Breckland-based artists have until 26 August to get in touch with Sam to find out more and to register to take part. Although Breckland will publicise the event by producing and distributing a brochure featuring all participating artists, the onus is on participating artists to promote the Trail and their work. The dates of the Trail are 8 - 16 November 2014. Artists who are interested in taking part should email [email protected] to request a registration form. Tom is retiring and is hoping to spend a lot more time with his camera! To help him on his way the Council presented him with a voucher to spend at the Norwich Camera store WEX. Thank you to all who helped, provided for, or supported our Carbrooke Village Festival, inspite of the weather, we all had a great, community time together and over £1500 was raised between the different organisations taking part. ‘Carbrooke Young Believers worked hard as usual at putting on a lovely play and running the service on Sunday 29th. The weekend ended in much needed sunshine – (although a little late!) and ‘Songs of Praise,’ with our favourite hymns chosen by the congregation. AUGUST: THE BOY TOM I recon when yu are a readin this them old combines will be a’goin. I hev seen one a’goin already (2nd week July) but that were cuttin sum oil seed rape. When thas ready they’ll be a gettin inta the winter barley and arter that the wheat. I hev been asked how farmers know when the corn is ready t’cut. Fustly that ha’a changed colour from green to gold/yella all the way t’the ground, then yu should be able t’rub the grains outa the head by hand und check that the grain is hard by a biting it with yar teeth. Yu ha’a be suffin careful a doin this cos yu can break a tooth; I did several year ago. Afor the com-bine go the farmers test that the moisture level hev dropped down to 16% or lower, any higher than this und they ha’a start the crop old drier up und that’ll cost money. Years ago yu could tell when barley were gettin fit cos when the grains in the head became hard und dry the weight would bend the grain head over und this action would cause the neck to break or crack. On a still warm day yu could stand a’side a field o’barley und hear the necks o’barley a crackin over. There hev bin a’lot in the pearper und on the TV leatly about parents bein fined for takin their younguns outa school durin term time. I were a talkin to my Brother about that tuther day und we recon that would a’cost our Father a lot o’money hed that rule been in when we were at school. Cos we always hed a family holiday afor harvest started we recon that we hardly ever attended the last week o’the summer term. Another thing our Father said was “allus to go away when yu on holiday cos if yun don’t they’ll cum arter yu for suffin”. Once years leater when I were a Farm Foreman I started my holiday on the Saturday morning but did not go away. About 11 o’clock on the Saturday night the Boss rung up sayin there were a cow a calvin with twins und could I go und help the vet get um out. Acoos I went und helped. At about 2am on the Sunday morning while I were still a’helpin I remembered what my Father hed said. I hev been a watchin the World Cup football. I got suffin savage when I saw then play-ers a rolling about pretendin their hurt. I say t’the Missus “ they want t’be kicked by an old Highland Cow, that’ll meake um roll about a’bit”. The trouble is the younguns see um a’doin that und copy um when they play. The Missus und I hev bin to the Hampton Court Flower Show. We hed bin a thingkin about a goin to the Chelsea Flower Show but the Missus recon,if we went, she’d see if she could leave me there with them old Chelsea Pensioners. We hed a good look round at the Hampton Court Show. My hart they must’a spent a rare lot o’time a gettin them gardens & plants ready. I hed a good look but I could unt see a weed any where. They were showing a master crop of vegetables on one o’the outside plots which hant bin attacked by pigeons or slugs. We din’t buy anything cos if we did the Missus would ha wanted t’buy one o’them little barra things to cart the plants around in all day: the only colour they did um in were pink Fare ye well t’gether und du yu keep a’troshin.

From The Editor Firstly for those of you who like your football, wasn’t the World Cup great? Even with England failing to get out of their group (which my dad correctly predicted would happen back in March) the tournament threw up wonderful moments. Germany thoroughly deserved to win and could dominate the world-game for quite a while. The Wayland Players are starting to plan for their next production. Play-Readings are taking place on August 5th and 12th. Coming up in July is the Butterfly Conservation’s ‘Big Butterfly Count’ survey, which takes place between 19th July—10th August.
