“cross training is imperative in the development of the youth athlete, particularly at the elite level. strengthening the core is a solid base to build a foundation on, while building the other muscle groups in pairs. it is far easier to work with a player who has already come prepared to work during practice by having participated continually (and diligently) in their cross training .” – adina hayton, director of operations, hockey2, llc—home of the az Bobcats aaa Program

Dr. hank Radda is the provost at grand canyon University. For more information on gcU’s honors Institute, email [email protected]. You can also learn more about gcU’s honors program by visiting gcu.edu/honors-program.

As yet another school year approaches, students of all ages have choices to make about their academic future.

For those academically motivated students looking for an additional challenge, an honors program can be an excellent choice – designed to push the student’s boundaries of the critical thought process.

Whether your student is interested in their middle or high school honors program, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, adding a challenging class, or diving into any type of advanced curriculum – it’s undenia-ble that “honors” is a brand of rigor that offers many benefits such as:

SmaLLER cLaSS SIzES. The challenging nature and competitive access to these programs naturally leads to smaller class sizes. When paired with structured capacity caps, in order to facilitate increased participation and discussion, classes often house fewer students than a typical classroom.

These events are also an excellent way for students to increase their exposure to key teachers or faculty, which can strengthen the bonds of mentorship or networking.Challenge your young learner to go beyond just “school” this year by exploring advanced curricu-lum or honors options. For the ambitious, curious or goal-orientated student who is seeking to make an impact in their community and world, it can be just the program they need to help them stay academically engaged and reach their goals. What is the best thing about Xteme Gym? The best thing about Xtreme Gymnastics is the coaches and the overall environment of the gym as a whole. Everyone is always supportive, knowledgeable, and most of all motivating.

What is your favorite event? My favorite event by far is rings, without them I don’t know if I’d love gymnastics half as much as I do. I love the

feeling of absolute control over my body and what it’s doing, and still rings is the

event where all of that comes together in harmony.

Tell our readers why you chose to get into gymnastics? I wanted to get into great shape and be part of a team while having the extra agility edge then others that I could use in all sports etc.

What event do you excel in? Floor is my top event, followed by floor, is vault, and rings.

Have you won any awards? Yes I have. This past

season I won Arizona States for level 9 men’s floor

and rings.

What is the most exciting thing about being involved in gymnastics with your three brothers? The best part is that I get to spend lots of time

with them, watch them train and see where

they are at in gymnastics.

What event is your favorite? Least favorite? My favorite event is high bar

along with vault. My least favorite is pommel horse and parallel bars. I like high bar /vault because I get to do/learn big tricks. Pommel horse is very hard and takes a long time to get better.

Parallel bars are hard and there are not that many tricks you can learn.

ashton6th grader at Foothills academy in scottsdale

What level are you competing at right now? I am competing at a level 5.

Where do you see your future with gymnastics? I don’t know exactly but I would like to get a college scholarship.

What is your favorite thing about Xtreme Gym? My favorite thing about Xtreme gym is the coaches.

What is the hardest thing that you have had to learn? The hardest thing I have had to learn

from gymnastics is overcoming the scariness of being up so

high and learning hard tricks.

How often are you at the gym? 16 hours a week. It is hard to get enough sleep and get my schoolwork done, but it’s worth it to me. Z

soPhia develops her own appQ. tell our readers what app you developed.a. It is called SuperTutor and it is an app that helps you with your math facts. It helps you practice addition, subtraction, multiplication & division using numbers 1 through 12.

Q. how did you come up with the idea to do this/What type of help, if any, did you have to create this app?a. A few years ago my grandfather had to make an app for a class he was taking. It was a very simple app, yet I thought it would help a lot of kids practice their math facts. My grandfather asked me what changes he thought he could make to improve it. It took a lot of time meeting together and making changes, but then it started to develop into something big.

Q. What was the most challenging part of creating an app?a. Making decisions because you can only have so much content in your app.

Q. Where can our readers find more information about how to purchase your app?a. Go to the Amazon app store and then find the category for educational games. Look for SuperTutor. The app is free!

Q. you just graduated from madison meadows, tell us about your speech you got to make at the graduation. a. For my graduation ceremony from 8th grade at Madison Meadows I gave a speech about the future.

Q. tell our readers about your recent spelling Bee competition.a. When I was at the State Spelling Bee, I was extremely nervous and anxious. When I lost on the word “claimant”, I was really disappointed because I knew the word. Knowing the word, but still getting it wrong, made the loss worse.

Q. you recently placed 2nd in an essay competition, tell us about what your topic was and what it means to you.

a. Yes, I did get 2nd in the statewide Anti-Defamation League essay competition about moral courage. I wrote about Chiune

Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat who issued thousands of visas to Lithuanian Jews to be sent to Japan during World War II. I also wrote about the duo of Rajan Hoole and Kopalasingham Sritharan, two Sri Lankan human rights activists and defenders who documented atrocities committed on both sides of the Sri Lankan Civil War. These are very important topics to me. The first being, that I am Sri Lankan and have many family members who were involved in or directly experienced the effects and impact of the war. I was very happy to have gotten second place.

Q. tell us about your recent accomplishments.a. I won the Half-Arabian Country Pleasure JOTR 14 and under Championship at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. I also won Saddle Seat Equitation 14 and under. I also won the Half-Arabian Country Pleasure JTR (Junior to Ride) Reserve Championship.

Q. tell our readers about your accident. a. I was riding a new purebred Arabian horse, Beg for Mercy, at a horse show in Santa Barbara. Mercy didn’t get along with many riders, but he seemed to like my riding style.  Then, like a flip of a switch, He pushed me into the wall, so I corrected him. What happened next was a nightmare in slow motion.  He gave a small rear first; I then adjusted myself

just before his second rear, which left me half way off the saddle.  Then, with even less warning he reared a third time and this time, I slid off.  With me on the ground and his front-end in the air, he lost his footing in the muddy arena and dropped down on top of me.  I broke my pelvis in eight places and spent the summer in bed.   The day I was told I could ride again, I saddled-up Duke.  I was so excited to be back in the saddle.

Q. What are you learning so far?a. This week is all game design. I’m learning how to design levels and characters using backgrounds, platforms and making sure things are active. Last week I was in Ohio on vacation but the week before that we did the engineering of energy. I built a water wheel and a windmill. In the afternoon we built Lego Robotix and had a battle. It was awesome!

Q. What do you like best about the camp?a. I like that I have made friends at the camp and learned so much. I really want to learn more about programming and game design. Maybe I can learn to program mods for Minecraft later this summer. My friend’s name are Abhinav and Anokh and the teachers are Mr. Ron, Mr. Jeff and Mr. Brady. They all make camp a lot of fun.

Isabella was a very bright girl, but suffered from severe dyslexia, which significantly impacted her reading skills. Her parents wanted to find a solution to help boost her reading comprehension and increase her confidence when they discovered Brightmont Academy. Isabella began attending the Brightmont Academy Deer Valley campus when she was entering the sixth grade last year.

“When Isabella came to us, we knew that she was incredibly bright, and our goal was to efficiently address her reading comprehension and writing skills,” said Campus Director Dr. Judith Zenna-Valgento. The experience with Brightmont Academy worked for Isabella as she just concluded her sixth grade year, reading well above grade level. Not only is she succeeding at school, but her confidence level has soared. “Isabella is a delightful, diligent and optimistic individual who has achieved great success at Brightmont,” Dr. Valgento said. “We could not be more pleased to celebrate her success.” isabella currently attends Brightmont’s deer valley campus

Q. tell us about yourself and what it was like to be a part of the West-mec cosmetology program. a. I started the program during my junior year of high school and graduated both high school and Cosmetology at the same time. The West-MEC Cosmetology program was a great experience because it taught me everything I needed to know about getting started in the cosmetology industry. The time I spent on the “clinic” or salon floor was my favorite because we got to work on actual clients and experiment on our mannequins. The program provides students with the basics and then encourages students to expand and grow into whatever they want to be as a stylist.

Q. When you are not at school, what do you enjoy doing? a. I really enjoy doing a lot of creative things. I love to draw, paint, write, read-- stuff like that. I’m also involved in my church. Brittney esserTaLkS gYmnaSTIcS at arizona Sunrays

At what level are you currently practicing gymnastics? I competed Xcel Platinum last year and am currently training Xcel Diamond this year.

Do you compete? If so, have you won any awards/trophies? In which event? Yes, I compete. I’ve won 3 trophies and over 90 medals. I’ve gotten medals for all events, including all around.

What event is your favorite? Least favorite? Vault is my favorite. I’m good at running and I have a lot of power. I don’t really have a least favorite. Of course, some days are better than others, but for the most part, I like all the events.

How long have you been in gymnastics? How long have you been at Arizona Sunrays? I’ve been in gymnastics (and at Sunrays) for five and a half years. Ever since my first lesson, I’ve always loved it! I had a friend who did gymnastics at Sunrays, and that’s what got me into it.

Tell us about one of your coaches? What makes him/her a great coach? My coaches, Matt and Amanda, are the best. They motivate me and they always tell me what I need to hear, even if I don’t want to hear it. They are very understanding and they have a great sense of humor, which makes practice fun. I’ve known them for a while and I’m really close to them. I couldn’t ask for better coaches.

If you had any superpower what would you have and what things would you do with this superpower? If I could have any superpower, I would love to be able to fly. I would use it to get everywhere, and to get to practice on time. I’d use it to improve my gymnastics and try a bunch of new things! Z

Brittney is currently a junior at Pinnacle Peak

high school

How did you get into acting? I started dancing when I was three and loved performing in front of an audience so, I thought it would be fun to audition for some dancing roles in theater.

What is your favorite role you have been cast in? My favorite role was Twin 2, a lost boy, in Peter Pan. My best friend, Mimi Yonover, was Twin 1 so that made it really fun.

How many shows have you been in at Desert Stages Theater? Six shows (not including summer camp productions).

Which plays have you done and do you have a favorite? Seussical the Musical, The Little Mermaid, Butterfly’s Day, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Aladdin Jr. Butterfly’s Day was my favorite show. I really love all of them.

How much time do you spend preparing for a role each day? I usually practice two to four hours a day dancing, learning songs and going over lines outside of rehearsal.

What would you say to other young kids that want to get into acting at Desert Stages? I would say definitely “Do it!” You won’t regret it. I started out doing summer camp at DST and I loved it, I made a ton of friends and loved the counselors.

What are some of the things you love about live theater? #1 Performing. It is so much fun to watch the whole show come together with the costumes, the choreography and seeing the set being built all before opening night.

Have you ever been unhappy about a role you were cast for? No. Never. Z
