five questions about online high School answered

To help parents and students learn more about online schooling, Primavera Online High School answered the top five

questions in this post.

1HOw mucH dOeS Online HigH ScHOOl cOSt?In Arizona, all public charter schools are

tuition free. So long as the school is not private, no tuition will be charged.

2HOw dO i trAnSfer frOm AnOtHer ScHOOl?To switch to any school, you will

need to submit your transcript records, which your previous school should provide for you. From there, the transferring process varies for each school.

3wHAt will my cOurSeS lOOk like? While daily coursework will vary within each school, the majority of online

curriculum is interactive and tailored to the student. Generally, students attend online live teaching sessions where they will learn the material and engage in “classroom” discussions. Many schools will also have online workbooks and lessons for students to read and study independently.

4will i get tO interAct witH clASSmAteS?While this can be a great concern for

students and parents, online students will get just as much socialization as traditional schools. Most online schools hold in-person and have chat rooms monitored by the school for students to connect with classmates in a safe, inviting way.

5HOw will i cOmmunicAte witH my teAcHerS?In Arizona, public charter schools should

have the same qualifications as traditional teachers. Without the turmoil of 30 or more kids in a classroom at once, online teachers are able to provide more one-on-one support to their students through online tutoring sessions, phone calls and emails. Additionally, some online schools will have another feature for students to contact teachers. Z

Q. you participate in Judo tell us about that?A. I started Judo when I was six years old. I like the competition aspect of the sport. I believe that the techniques I learn will help me one day in a real life situation. Judo helped me be more confident. Through Judo I have overcome my fear of performing in front of a crowd.

Q. How do you rank amongst your peers?A. I have been going to local, state, and national competitions. Every time I have gone to competitions I have always placed either first or second place.

Q. what is the hardest thing you have had to learn in Judo?A. Trying to relax and dealing with stress. Participating in tournaments can be stressful, there are a lot of distractions: my parents, the crowd, referees, and coaches are telling me what to do at the same time.

Q. you make honor roll as well, how does this make you feel?A. It makes me feel like I can excel at two things I love; if I practice.

Q. what is the best thing about freedom Academy?A. The best thing about Freedom Academy is my teachers and my friends.

Alysa is an eighth grader at freedom Academy.

Q. you recently won a congressional Award gold medal for your volunteer work. How did you come to receive it? How was washington dc?A. When I was in eighth grade I signed up online to work toward earning the congressional award. To earn the award you have to spend at least two years setting goals and working on voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and go on an exploration/expedition. When I first joined I wasn’t sure if I could do all of the required hours, but I decided to challenge myself and keep on going, one goal at a time. Soon

I earned the bronze, silver and then the gold medal. Going to Washington, DC was a great experience. I got to meet members of Congress and visit the Capitol Building.

Q. you are a very busy Senior! what do you like to do in your spare time?A. Every weekend I volunteer at the Apache Junction Food Bank. I help with unloading the truck and sorting the cooler. I also coach youth basketball and soccer for the parks and recreation department. When I want to relax I watch soccer games on TV - I am a huge Arsenal fan. I also watch every UFC event I can.

a student attending Madison #1 School, Jade DeFonce, is a member of the Veteran’s Pride Battalion in the Phoenix/Glendale area and was a

part of this boot camp training. Leaguer Cadet Apprentice Jade DeFonce was in the Bravo Company at this training. League cadets were trained and tutored by higher ranked teens in the U.S. Sea Cadet Corps (ages 13 to 18) and supervised by adult staff. Bravo Company outshined the other two companies and earned the title Honor Company. One cadet from each company has the opportunity to earn the title Honor Cadet. Cadet Jade DeFonce earned that title from the Honor Company, Bravo Company. Here is what she had to say about her experience:

Q. tell us about the Honor cadet title you received?A. The Honor Cadet title means that I was noticed and recognized. I feel very proud because the competition was stiff. When I got back home there was a big banner on my garage that said “Bravo Zulu, Jade DeFonce, Honor Cadet, VPB is Proud.” Which means “Good job”. VPB is my battalion (Veterans Pride Battalion). I felt very surprised and... WOW!

Jade is an eighth grader at madison #1 School.

Q. you recently won twO national titles in events for the Speech and debate competition, tell us about that?A. When I was selected to represent Arizona at the National Speech and Debate competition in Dallas, Texas, I was extremely honored, but also somewhat daunted: there were over 3,500 competitors attending Nationals this year.

During the award ceremony, as each name was called, my mind kept spinning faster and faster. First top 24,

then top 12, top six. And now, they had just announced the third place winner, meaning I was one of the top two in the country. They proceeded to announce the second place winner and I was more than ready to step forward. But they didn’t call my name. I was completely and totally shocked.

As I went up for my second event, Prose Interpretation, I was astounded to win again. It was only later that I learned that no one at the Middle School level had ever won two categories in the same year in their 90-year history. I could not be thankful to my coaches and teammates. I could not have gotten where I did without them.

diego P. Valencia, a fifth grade student at St. Francis Xavier School,

lived out the school motto of “Kids for Others” by being a kid for others this summer as part of the Mini Vinnies, a new student and family group that supports the St. Francis Xavier Parish’s St. Vincent de Paul chapter. Diego joined the Mini

Vinnies, and when he joined in could not participate in some of the planned projects, so on his own he held a clothing and water drive. He asked his family and friends to donate needed items. He spent all of July collecting these items and had great success. He was able to donate over 25 cases of water, and many boxes of clothes. These items were all donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Way to go Diego!

Q. what is one impact you would like to make being class president? A. One impact I would like to make being the student body president is to make others succeed. When I walk to school every morning I always think how I could make an impact to other students as student body president. I ask myself , “How can I make others reach their goal?” The answer is to keep trying and to practice. It’s like football when you have trouble throwing a football correctly you get frustrated. Well if then you keep practicing you will get it correct one day. That is the impact I would like to make.

Q. tell us about your participation in national Honors Society? A. I was vice president for my seventh grade year. I’m in eighth grade now and I will be trying to be either vice president or president. I have to be a leader for other students. There’s more than just helping, academics, and leading in NJHS. You can change another student’s life at school. You’re able to teach and help that student accomplish more then their goals. You’re able to help unlock more of their talents that they have not discovered yet. That’s what we do in NJHS and that’s what I try to accomplish.

an avid golfer.

Q. you are involved with a lot of sports at Saint thomas the Apostle? tell us about them? which sport is your favorite? why? A. They offer football, basketball, and baseball. We do football in fall, basketball in winter and baseball in

spring. My favorite sport is golf because it just comes natural to me. I started playing two years ago and I just had a natural knack for the game.

Q. tell us about your gold training at clS? A. I have been a camp counselor at Christ Lutheran for two summers and it is really fun.

Q. tell us about one of your favorite teachers? A. One of my favorite teachers in Ms. Janice Junker because even though she may seem tough, she is really good at improving students reading and writing.

Q. did you do anything exciting this summer? A. I went to Italy and Spain with my family and had an amazing time. We went to Rome and it was really cool to see all the old structures that you hear about all the time, like the coliseum.

Jack is an eighth grader at Saint thomas the Apostle.

sometimes, life hands out trials that make it hard to graduate high school. But that hasn’t stopped Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Bell, a senior at Primavera Online

High School who is set to get her diploma this school year.

Lizzie was born with Black Diamond Anemia, a rare blood disorder where the body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells and causes the immune system to fail. In order to have good health, she had to go to the hospital frequently for blood transfusions and doctor’s appointments. As time went on and school became more

demanding, Lizzie found her health was causing her to fall behind in school.

At that point, Lizzie decided to attend Primavera. With a 100 percent online curriculum and just two courses every six weeks, Lizzie was able to better focus on her schooling and still be able to focus on getting better.

After countless hospital visits and many hard days for Lizzie, her health is slowly starting to improve. Through it all, Lizzie said that she’s been grateful to be with a school who has given her personalized support.

“With Primavera...I can really take my time and enjoy it, and learn what I need to be learning without having that pressure of the 45-minute time period that I had with a teacher (at my old school),” said Lizzie.

Jessica began playing competitive ice hockey when she was six years old, by ninth grade the demands of her competitive team ramped up to the point where

following a traditional classroom schedule was becoming increasingly difficult.

Jessica’s mother, Raegan was relieved when she discovered Brightmont Academy in the spring of Jessica’s freshman year and enrolled her for tutoring support. They decided Brightmont Academy would be a better full-time option for Jessica, and she pursued all four years of high

school at the Scottsdale campus, just recently graduating this spring.

Due to the flexibility of the schedule, Jessica was able to play competitive hockey in Canada her last two years of high school, completing all of her schoolwork online and meeting with her teacher via Skype.

“We had an incredibly positive experience at Brightmont Academy,” Raegan said. “The flexibility of the school enabled Jessica to follow her dream to play hockey. She really enjoyed the teachers, the flexibility, and last year she even had a chance to be the captain on her team in Ontario.”

Next year she is playing on a junior women’s team in New Hampshire with the hope of being scouted by college coaches.

chloe was awarded the “Golden Boot” for most goals scored on her school team last season. She is also in National Junior Honor Society, chorus, and won

top math student from her house (gifted program) at Willis Junior High.

Q. what are your favorite subjects in school? do you find it challenging to maintain straight A’s?A. I like math, and social studies. As for the difficulty of maintaining my A’s, well, I guess it’s a challenge. I’m a workaholic by nature, so even if the tasks are daunting,

it’ll stress me out too much and I’ll get them done. However, it can be a challenge to balance school and soccer, although I get it sorted out and get everything done on time.

Q. tell us about your passion for soccer?A. I’ve been playing since I was three. I played on a recreational team until I was about eight or nine, and that was when my parents encouraged me to try out for a club team. I made it onto the top team in my first year trying out, which was pretty terrifying at the time. I only knew two people on the team.

i knew I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was three years old; from this aspiration and love for animals I have spent the majority of my free time either babysitting the pets of

close friends or volunteering at Fallen Feathers, a non-profit wild and exotic bird rescue and rehabilitation center. I have also had the extraordinary opportunity to attend West-MEC at their Northeast campus for Veterinary Science.

This school has allowed me to develop my skills and even assist in creating our first West-MEC Open House where we allowed the public to meet animal rescues and similar organizations in Arizona. I am also part of their HOSA

chapter where I was able to enter in the HOSA State Competitions 2015 in Veterinary Science in which I won second place. This allowed me to compete in the HOSA National Leadership Conference where I won fourth place in the Nation. My life goal is to attend a top university to receive an education that will later allow me to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. I hope to further this degree with the study of large and exotic animals. I derive my inspirations from my steadfast, loving father, the always passionate and giving Jody Kieran, owner of Fallen Feathers, and my awe-inspiring West-MEC teacher, Ms. Adams, who have all helped me immensely in achieving my hopes and dreams.

Q. what is your favorite thing about attending christ church School?A. I like to learn all of the Bible stories, and I think the teachers are nice, and that it’s not too big, so I know everyone!

Q. who has been one of you favorite teachers? why?A. My favorite teacher at Christ Church School is Miss Wilding. She is my science teacher and we learn about the first inventors, we get to do experiments, and have a lot of fun. She is always nice and I love science!

chase succeeds aT the Jones-gordon School

Chase loves to read and write, but most of all, he shows a genuine interest in his school subjects and in his growth as

a student and citizen. His teachers describe him as a joy to have in the classroom, “excited to learn and understand, not just memorize facts and terms.” He is not only a diligent and creative writer, he exudes positivity, drawing in his peers and elevating the classroom atmosphere. His warmth and acceptance of others touches the entire school community.

This impressive young man demonstrates genuine interest in listening to others. His polite and gentle demeanor puts those around him at ease. The school Assistant Director stated, “If I could have 100 students like Chase, I would!”

Q. what would you like readers to know about you?A. This is my third year here at Jones-Gordon school and I really enjoy it. This school has renewed my faith in schools. I came here when the school was known as On-Track Academy. I had a terrible experience at my past school; my health was not at its peak and I was not in the best spot in my life. Coming here renewed my faith.

Q. what about the school renewed your faith?A. The attitudes of the teachers and their wiliness to help. It also helps that they are brilliant. I also benefit from the tailored classes and curriculum.

Q. where do you see yourself after high school?A. I want to go to a university and, long-term, go to law school. I want to be an attorney so I can advocate for special needs children. I’ve been there. It is difficult when you have needs and a school doesn’t provide resources. I want to advocate for others and make a difference.

poGo pass: revoluTioniZinG the Way the valley Saveson entertainment

The Pogo Pass, brought to the Valley in 2012 by Shane Belliston, Mitch Jones, and Scott Hyatt

began with 7 venues, and has quickly expanded to include 17, with an expected 40,000 pass holders by the end of 2015.

The founders brought on reputable venues like The Phoenix Zoo, Sunsplash, The i.d.e.a. Museum, and free admission to DBacks games, ASU athletics, and more. “We want quality venues for our pass holders to enjoy”, says Amy Brinton Pogo Pass Sales Manager.

Brinton, a mother of 4 was hired by Pogo Pass just over a year ago to help promote sales.”The pass quickly pays for it’s self,” says Brinton. “pass holders won’t feel the need to visit every venue on the pass to get their money’s worth.

With 17 venues, and multiple admissions to each, it’s a pass well suited to take any family through an entire year.”

Once purchased, the pass can instantly be printed or can be viewed and scanned from a smart phone at participating venues.
