“A must-see for anyone on social networks.”

directed bY: Werner Herzog 98 minutes

Oscar®-nominated documentarian Werner Herzog chronicles the virtual world from its origins to its outermost reaches, exploring the digital landscape with the same curiosity and imagination he previously trained on earthly destinations as disparate as the Amazon, the Sahara, the South pole and the Australian outback. Herzog leads viewers on a journey through a series of provocative conversations that reveal the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works—from business to education, space travel to healthcare, and the very heart of how we conduct our personal relationships.

Acclaimed Italian auteur Nanni moretti finds comedy and pathos in the story of margherita, a harried film director (margherita buy, A FIVe StAr LIFe) trying to juggle the demands of her latest movie and a personal life in crisis. the star of her film, a charming but hammy American actor (John turturro) imported for the production, initially presents nothing but headaches and her crew is close to mutiny. Away from the shoot, margherita tries to hold her life together as her beloved mother’s illness progresses, and her teenage daughter grows ever more distant.

this masterwork by Krzysztof Kieslowski is one of the 20th century’s greatest achievements in visual storytelling. Originally made for polish television, DeKALOg focuses on the residents of a housing complex in late-Communist poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas that are at once deeply personal and universally human. the series’ ten hour-long films, drawing from the ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, grapple deftly with complex moral and existential questions concerning life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passage of time.

the recontextualizing of Oscar micheaux’s 1925 silent race film bODY AND SOUL has been brilliantly accomplished by a new music score by composer renèe baker and her Chicago modern Orchestra project. Starring paul robeson, singer and political activist in his first movie role, baker’s score brings to life the societal ills of the time, pushing the envelope forward to the dangers of 2016. many of the contexts of both ages are remarkably similar in light of racial strife and continued struggle for equality and a level playing field for African Americans in America. taking the cue from the continuing story being written everyday in our society, baker and CmOp crafted a score that performs as more than dialogue, more than background—the framework of the movie and its action come to life with the narrative form and marriage with her score.

sAntA sAngre(Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1989, 123mins)

In the 1970s, his legendary films eL tOpO and tHe HOLY mOUNtAIN redefined movies as both art and entertainment while changing the face of cinema forever. And in 1989, vi-sionary writer/director Alejandro Jodorowsky returned with

his modern masterpiece: the story of a young circus performer, the crime of passion that shatters his soul, and the macabre journey back to his armless mother, deaf-mute lover, and murder. It is an odyssey of ecstasy and anguish, belief and blasphemy, beauty and madness.

pOssessiOn (Andrzej Zulawski, 1981, 124mins, 35mm)

Capturing the energy generated when two people whose lives are so intensely fused are forcibly split, pOSSeSSION is an emotional nuclear explosion. If all we were given were its operatic performances by leads Isabelle Adjani and Sam

Neill, its impossible-to-describe music by Andrzej Korzynski, and its hyper-kinetical ballet of camera choreography—all delivered with the force of a long-suppressed traumatic memory—then pOSSeSSION would already be the best film about divorce ever made.
