OfficersGerry talked about football, the people he knew in Bakersfield(apparently that is just about everyone), and doing things becauseyou love them. He said he was not that hard being honest whenworking for Gil Bishop because if you cheated, Gil would “put youon waivers.”
He said that told him not to use profanityduring his Rotary talk. Gerry said he replied that “there is no G__D___ way he would not swear at Rotary.”
He said as a young man he would read about “anyone who hada jockstrap.”
He knew about Burr Baldwin when he came to Bakersfield in1957 and he knew Harvey Hall when his business was still a dream. He said that Eddie Paine used to play BC football and that Eddiewas “probably the ugliest guy on the team.”
Gerry came to BC for a year and is still here 49 years later. Hesaid he was fortunate to be at BC during the years when there were12,000 or more at every game. Because of this, there was plenty ofmoney back then. Things are different now, and fundraising isneeded. Plenty of people help, including many present today.
He told about his friendship with Buck Owens and when he firstspoke with Buck.
In response to a question, Gerry told about losing to LongBeach CC 21-20. After the game one of the Long Beach playerssaid “we might have won but they beat the living hell out of us.”That says a lot about BC coaching.
Gerry announced that the first game this year, on Sept. 2against Fullerton, will include a 1976 reunion. That year BC woneverything, including a national championship.
He also announced that BC will have a swimming team startingin 2006/07
President Greg closed the meeting with a reminder to sign upfor rolling readers and an announcement that he has ten thoughtsfor 2006, one each week. For this week, thought #10:
The meeting was closed.
