CommunityLink
Our Church
This is the monthly magazine of our church featuring articles, news, information, stories, and other events for the month.
We are calling it “CommunityLink” because we are a group of churches linked together creating a community and who are commissioned to reach our local communities and
beyond.
Defi ning what we do…
Our purpose statement establishes the parameters for what we do in the life of the church. It becomes something that is living in our church community and is recognised
in everything we do.
The assignment God has given to the church is:
To be a God-honouring Christian Community…
Connecting people to Jesus
Growing people to be like Jesus
Serving people with grace through Jesus
What this means is that everyone will be active in the life of the church helping people fi nd connection with Jesus through sharing the Gospel. We grow so that in everything we
do and say we display a likeness to Jesus, and those who see us - see Jesus. We are called to serve using the gifts given to us by God through His Holy Spirit to promote Jesus and the Kingdom of God.
Jesus Christ is the Head of the church and we are reminded daily through our assignment that He is to be glorifi ed in everything we do.
Here for the First Time?Welcome to our church. It’s great you
made the decision to join us today. We hope that your time with us is enjoyable. We are a church that loves Jesus and believe He is everything to us. You will experience worship that aims to glorify God and hear preaching from the Bible which we believe is perfect truth from God.
Please make yourself known to a host who greeted you at the door as you entered or
one of the pastors. Also take the time to look through the Information Pack and fi ll out the card so we can stay in touch if you decide to make our church your church.

One of the purposes we focus on in our church is “Growing
people to be like Jesus.” This statement indicates the process of change we all go through no matter how long we have been a Christian. Our goal is to be like Jesus.
What helps with this process of change is an openness to revelation. Without revelation there is no catalyst for change.
Revelation is defi ned in this way: “In various ways and at different times God makes a supernatural revelation of himself and His purposes and plans, which is under the guidance of His Spirit.”
Revelation is not confi ned to the events in Scripture as we still today receive revelation from God through His Spirit. All revelation changes our hearts and minds so we can know more about God, His plan and step into change with confi dence that God is beside us.
The proverb mentions what happens when there is no revelation:
“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” Proverbs 29:18
This thought of “people cast off restraint” means they literally do their own thing which usually can be unwise things.
The Bible also tells us that revelation speaks of the end:
“For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.” Habakkuk 2:3
Revelation reveals things to us at an appointed time. This isn’t always an instant process as God reveals revelation to us with the purpose of the preferable future. So when we do receive revelation it will tell of the end, but wait for it as God will bring its fulfi lment in His time.
The Apostle Peter had such a revelation that God used to help him see the bigger picture of His plan for the world. Peter was faithful to the establishment of the early church—He was committed to preaching Jesus to the Jewish people bringing them to a place of repentance and life change.
These people who once persecuted Jesus and the church—now are followers of Jesus. God’s plan extended further than just one group of people to experience the life changing nature of His love.
For Peter to grasp this change of heart and thinking that his ministry is to reach beyond his own people—a revelation was needed and that is what he got.
In Acts 10, Peter was in Joppa staying in the home of Simon the tanner. During his stay while hungry he fell into a trance and saw a vision of a large sheet coming down from heaven. On this sheet was all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds that were forbidden to touch or eat. In this vision there was a voice that said “Peter, kill and eat”. Peter replied “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” The voice spoke again “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” Three times
this happened and then the sheet went back to heaven.
This left Peter confused and wondering what it all meant, as revelation can do as we wait for the appointed time. Cornelius, a centurion also had a vision that requested Peter to come to him and he sent men to bring Peter to him which God also told Peter about.
When Peter arrived to Cornelius’ home and being directed by the Holy Spirit the revelation become clear that God was about to do a new thing and showed Peter that every person is loved by God and accepted in His Kingdom.
In Cornelius’ home this is what happened:
“So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” Acts 10:34-35
From Peter’s revelation we too can receive revelation on how we are to present Jesus to people we are called to reach out.
1. Being a nice person is not enough.
The verse says that “Peter opened his mouth and said.” If we are going to make an impact for the Kingdom of God, just being a nice person is not enough—we need to tell people why they need Jesus.
Peter says it in this way:
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the
6 August 2018
hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1 Peter 3:15-16
Be prepared to give an answer. Preparation is key to helping people understand why they need Jesus. Spend a lot of time preparing your testimony and learning the Scriptures, so you can have confi dence telling people about how amazing Jesus is.
2. If God shows no partiality nor should I.
It is so easy to only talk or spend any time with people who are similar to you or have an appearance that may not make you uncomfortable. Without us really knowing it, but we have the potential to decide who we should share with and not.
God loves everyone and if we are going to be more like Jesus we need to do the same. We might just need to work on the feeling of being uncomfortable so more people can have the opportunity to receive Jesus.
3. God loves everyone—but not everyone is acceptable to God.
Peter was very clear about this revelation saying: “…but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.” The trouble we have of sharing our faith to someone else is the thought of how it will be received.
God loves everyone, but if they don’t love Him and do what is right, God cannot receive them. People will be judged at the end and God decides who is accepted or rejected. But God’s heart is that everyone will change and be accepted by Him.
This is what we must do with the revelation of taking the Gospel to everyone:
To share the Gospel to everyone who will listen. Doing this with boldness and unashamed.
To show no partiality to anyone. God’s loves people and so should we regardless or who they are, what age they may be and what they have done.
To not give up as there is hope for everyone to be included in the Kingdom of God. We should be committed the way God is committed to everyone “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
Let’s be prepared for change and be uncomfortable because there are still too many people around the world who need Jesus. We can’t save everyone, but we can help in the mission to see all people receiving Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

Sewing Project in Siliguri, India
A BIG THANK YOU
Two parcels of needed waterproof fabric and other sewing supplies are heading off to the Bible School in Siliguri, India , this month. The sewing program is doing well, and they especially asked for tailors chalk as the local supply was very poor quality. I take advantage of local specials and sales to bolster the fabrics needed. So your missions giving is always wisely spent.
Thank you so much for your generous missions giving, which provides the young students a practical training outlet to serve the local community, by producing washable, reusable menstrual kits.

I’m pleased to report that our winter crops are fl ourishing in the Community Garden. They are the garlic, cabbages, rainbow chard, spinach, and rocket etc. Another 5 weeks and then ‘bingo’ spring will be upon us. Our crop of pumpkins proved very productive. In all I think we harvested about 40.
This year we have enjoyed having a Year 12 VCAL student Jai, with us. As part of his Community Service subject, Jai has diligently been attending the Garden on a weekly basis. With Kay’s encouragement, and under her direction, Jai established a hay bale garden and within 6 weeks has been able to pick leafy greens to take home and share with his family. It was also pleasing to greet two of his teachers who were keen to come and see what we are involved in. We see this as a great opportunity as an outreach into the Community.
The Day Care Children also attend on most Monday mornings vand are given a small posy of fl owers to take back to the Centre. The highlight of their visits is to pick the strawberries and raspberries.
Our Bunning’s Barbecue held in March of this year cleared $1,400 an amazing effort. We are so grateful to Julie, the Community Activities Offi cer, and to our dear Church friends who helped out on the day.

Waurn Ponds OutreachHello Church,Luke’s here! Some time back I shared my desire to start some sort of outreach into the local community (Not an easy task it turns out). This was possibly going to involve fi xing up the caravan, and then some fundraising was started. Eventually nothing happened for a while. Or so it seemed.Rest assured things have been progressing in the background, albeit slowly, but progress has been made.· We have a name· We have a team· We have a planWith the caravan slipping further and further away from being fi nancially viable, we’ve decided to use a smaller and more versatile trailer. (Example pictured). This will hopefully provide good quality coffee and possibly even be equipped with a BBQ for any outdoor functions the church holds.Ultimately the goal of the trailer and coffee is to start conversations with members of the community and share not only Coffee, but the love of Jesus and his saving grace as well. There is a lot to do still. We need to fi nd a suitable trailer to make functional, create fl yers to hand out, raise funds, and jump through more council red tape than you can poke a stick at!Luckily for us we’re not going in blind. God has been opening some doors for us, and we had a chance to meet with Pr David Owens from WildPath Church in Frankston, who has been doing something similar for a few years now. It was great for us to catch up with him and to learn how he started it, runs it, and how God has guided the direction for him to reach the community. As for the aforementioned name, team and plan, these will all be revealed in due course as we navigate the legal requirements for creating registered community programs etc. But rest assured we are hoping to have something to show you soon.Feel free to ask me if you have any questions, but most of all your prayers would be most welcome as we ask the Lord to lead us in this new endeavour.

Meri Behan
The Meri Behan project has come to an end.
For the last 12 months we have had a group of people committed to $20 a month over the course of that time. This has been a project that has raised $3,510 which has supported the girls’ education while staying in Rahab.
Thank you to everyone who committed to the $20 per month for 12 months. This has been a great effort by the members of our Church, and has had a positive impact on the mission of Rahab Centre for Hope.

We have had an exciting fi rst half of the 2018 year.
One of the highlights has been our celebration of Easter. Each of our Mainly Music families received a copy of the children’s book ‘Surprise! Easter’s HIDDEN treasure’. This book, amongst other things, tells the families, ‘Remembering how Easter happened right before their eyes. And all because God loves us so-yes, that’s the best surprise’. At our Winchelsea Mainly Music the book contained an invitation to an Alpha course our host church was presenting. One of the Mainly Music mums attended and made a decision to become a Christian. This was a great encouragement to the whole team at Winchelsea.
We started our forth Mainly Music at Torquay in the third term of last year. It has continued strongly in the fi rst half of this year. We currently have 100 families registered over our four sites: 28 at Winchelsea, 37 at Waurn Ponds, 10 at Anglesea, and 25 at Torquay Mainly Music.
Mainly Music couldn’t operate at our sites without the great work of our teams. We have 26 team members spread over the four sites. We would like to acknowledge; Rev. Wendy Gravolin, Judy Staples, Jenny Bawker, Sandra Dixon and Cassie McIntyre from the Anglican church and Rebekah Grinter from our church who, with Julie and myself, make up the Winchelsea team. Thanks to Lorna Grinter, Jenny Muller, Flo Ramsay (currently on leave) and Carol
Willman from our church, Aileen Gray from Corio Uniting, Sarah Morgan from Kardinia Sth and Jessie Wang and Grace Sim from the Chinese Church, who make up
the team at our church. Kylie Fuller, Naomi Shirley and Jenny Muller from our church, Margaret Vise, Rosa Cullen from Anglesea Anglican, and Kaye Mackie from Torquay Anglican who make up our team at Anglesea. Julie and myself along with Chris and Lydia Erving, Roger Brown, Elizabeth Keucke and Helen Reed from Torquay Anglican make up our Torquay Team. Once again, I have to give a ‘big’ thank-you to all of the team members for all their hard work.
We would encourage you to keep praying for these outreaches. If you would like to know more about any aspect of this ministry, please ask me.
School Ministry
Once again, we are organising the Christian Vocal Band Iron and Clay to perform in Winchelsea at the Neighbourhood Watch Day in November. This day is organised by the Winchelsea Police and they have used the band for the last few years. They have become a valued part of the Police’s work with the local Primary Schools. This was shown this year by the fact that the police moved the date of the event from October to November to fi t in with when I&C would be available! The ministry of Iron and Clay has allowed us to develop relationships in the community that may lead to further opportunities to serve. Let’s encourage each other to have a ‘Missions Mindset’ as we continue through the rest of 2018.
God bless.

The Gideon Ministry commenced in Australia in 1956, with many
people still retaining their original New Testaments received since that time. Gideons have now distributed in excess of 16.8 million scriptures throughout Australia since 1956.Gideons are active members of evangelical protestant churches and operate as the extended missionary arm of the local Church. We seek through personal example and testimony to lead others to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The object of the Gideons is to win others for the Lord Jesus Christ through:a) Association for serviceb) Personal Witnessingc) Placing God’s Word in the traffi c lanes of everyday life. The Gideons place Bibles in hotel rooms and we regular hear how having a Bible available has enabled people to fi nd God through His Word.New Testaments are placed beside beds in hospitals. We are forever grateful to the management of all hospitals in Geelong that enable us to check and place testaments each year into those medical facilities.Gideons are also actively placing New Testaments in to the hands of secondary school students. Again we are grateful to the Principals of most Private Geelong Schools giving permission for us to hand students a copy of God’s word. Sadly all Government secondary schools in the Geelong region don’t permit distribution of New Testaments to their students. We also provide personal copies of New Testaments to members of the Medical and Nursing profession, Police, Fire brigade and Armed forces.
In the current technology era we also now provide Bible App cards that enable people to down load a copy of God’s word in over 1,000 different languages. If English is not a person’s fi rst language the Bible app also has provision for individuals to hear scripture being spoken in their original language. As the extended missionary arm of the local Churches we can represent you in 201 countries around the world. You can support the Gideon Ministry fi rstly by your prayers as we distribute God’s word into life’s many traffi c lanes.Your fi nancial support is greatly appreciated as all donations received go into the purchase of scripture. Earlier this year Waurn Ponds Community Church – Belmont contributed $1,038 toward the purchase of scripture. We thank you for your generous donations. All administrative costs of the ministry are met by the members only enabling all donations received to purchase scriptures. Did you know one Bible cost approximately $5.00 and has the potential to reach many people in its expected useful life of 5-6 years? New Testaments distributed, cost approximately $1.60 and again these have a potential to impact the lives of up to 5 or 6 members of one family. You can help someone to say ‘yes’ to Jesus by becoming a friend of Gideons. This will enable you to prayer for lives to be changed through this ministry and to give as a fi nancial friend enabling you to receive New Testaments for your personal distribution. It only takes a few moments to sign up and
help someone say ‘yes’ to Jesus. You will be aware of the Gideon card stand which has a permanent position in the Church foyer. Please avail yourselves of the Cards. They are free to all however we would encourage you to send a donation to Gideons when the Cards are used.

Sunday, 1 July saw Burnside Camp in Anglesea come alive with the activity of SCKC Geelong buddies
and staff preparing for the arrival of our campers. Decorations were put up with care in cabins, birthday boxes lovingly wrapped and card written, backpacks fi lled with essentials and quilts chosen to be spread on bunk beds in readiness for the next day.
2018 is the second year that Geelong camp has run, with many of our volunteers returning from 2017. 12 of our 20 campers were also returning from 2017, so we were all very excited for Monday morning, when we got to see them again!
Camp goes by in a blur once the campers arrive with highlights such as a pamper afternoon and candlelit dinner for our girls, rocket building and BBQ for our boys, animal farms, walks to the beach, songs around the campfi re, a birthday party and of course, our Thursday night Have-a-go-show! The change in our campers during the week never ceases to amaze me – from the fi rst tentative steps off the bus to the fearless performances at the Have-a-go-show – they transform before our eyes! This transformation is largely due to the efforts of their buddies who, through their patience,
good humour and dedicated attention show their campers that they are valuable and loved. No matter what.
The end of camp was a little harder this year than last. While we’re always sad to say goodbye to our campers, this year we had 4 of them ‘graduate’, as they’re moving into high school next year and no longer able to attend camp. It was a bittersweet parting because, though we had
to say goodbye for now, at least 2 of the graduating campers want to return to camp as volunteers when they’re old enough and are going to get involved with Church youth groups in the meantime! It just shows how much a week of happy memories can have a lasting infl uence on a child’s life.
A huge thanks to Waurn Ponds Community Church for helping make camp possible! The teddies and other soft toys donated this year were not only a comfort while at camp but are now a beloved way for the children to remember the week.
Thank you again for all your continued support and God bless!

Breakfast Program at Christ ChurchPeople from our church helping this breakfast program held every Sunday morning for the disadvantage
The alarm goes off, it’s 6am…ugh! Roll out of bed, feel the carpet soft under your feet and jump into a
steaming shower. Dry yourself with a fl uffy towel (love that heated towel rail) and ponder what to wear, it is cold outside we’d better rug up. Mmmm I smell coffee, better get the kids up. “Come on guys it’s only one day a month, quick or we’ll be late!” We laugh and scoff down our breakfast. “Don’t forget to clean your teeth, hurry Dad’s already in the car…who’s got the key?” Breathless we pile into the car and head toward town, it’s freezing this morning. It starts to rain, ‘who’s going to open the toilets it wet and creepy?’ Dad of course. We’d better turn on the heater this morning and start up the urn for the cuppas. We set up the tables and start preparing the pans. “That’s my apron. Have you signed us in? What’s the date today for the order sheet? Have you put the sign out? Here they come.” ‘Good morning, what can we get you this morning?’
The train goes past, it’s 6am…ugh! Another sleepless night, I’d better get ready. I’ll hide my stuff behind that bush, man you can’t trust anyone! I wonder who’s going to be there this morning, I’m starving. It’s cold and wet but what can I do, I have to get there before 8:45 or I’ll get nothing. I’d be stuffed without that food, if only I could get out of this mess. My feet are killing me and walking is so slow. I’m embarrassed to talk to those people, I know I look a bit messy and don’t smell the best but I’m so hungry. The sign’s out, others outside with a smoke and a cuppa. Ahhh it’s so warm in here, I’ll get a cuppa and order some breakky. There’s that happy young girl, she knows my name and says, ‘Good morning, what can we get you this morning?’
“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ’I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’” Matthew 25:37-40 (NLT)

Breakfast Program at Grovedale College
Dear Pastor Dave and assembly at Waurn Ponds Community Church,
Waurn Ponds Community Church has been regularly donating towards our breakfast program for a number of years now and for this Grovedale College is so thankful.
Because of your generosity the chaplaincy program has been able to continue to provide students with breakfast once a week, and in previous years this has consisted of toasted sandwiches, fresh fruit and yogurt, juice, and hot chocolate. Due to changes in refurbishments within the college, breakfast is now being served from the Wellbeing room where students have access to cereal, fruit toast and toast and Vegemite, fresh fruit, and yogurt. It also provides a warm place to sit, play games, and socialise in these cooler months.
Again we are so thankful for your generosity which allows us to continue to provide breakfast and ongoing fruit during the week to meet the needs of our students.
May God Bless you richly
Kind RegardsKate PaunovichGrovedale College Chaplain

In July one of the Sundays, we had a combined meeting in Bendigo with the Bendigo Church and the Karen Church and other invited friends to celebrate Ps Taw and his wife Therey’s 10th wedding anniversary, and 2
young girls birthdays, and to pray over the Church and the leadership in Bendigo. The worship and message was delivered in both English and Karen.
We prayed for growth, stability, and for the protection and fruitfulness of the Holy Spirit in their lives of its congregation and leaders.
Heather and I shared with the congregation and other couples from within the community that have been investing into the life of Ps Taw’s family. About 70-80 people came for the meeting and stayed for fellowship lunch.

Our church is well established in the Bannockburn community and is a vibrant congregation, under the leadership of Steve
and Cass Abram who have felt the call to reach into the town to make Christ known to all those who are willing to listen. The church has established a wonderful local vision of praying for the ten towns that are located in the Bannockburn area and we are looking forward to seeing what God can do through the persistence of prayer.

When I was four years old I went to the shopping centre
with my Mum. We went to Kmart, where I really wanted to have a look and play in the toy section. Along the way I found myself captivated by a particular toy. It must have been a G.I.Joe or something like that. I spent some time daydreaming about how cool it would be to own the item. In looking at the row of toys, I had forgotten about where mum was, I turned around expecting to see my mum standing behind me. She wasn’t there!
Not feeling too concerned I begun to look around, Mum wasn’t anywhere nearby. So, I started to walk around the whole store, still couldn’t see her. Panic was starting to build. I ran out of Kmart and started to look in some of the other stores nearby. I still couldn’t fi nd mum.
Tears were starting to well up in my eyes. I realised that I was lost. I ran back into Kmart running around the store, desperate to fi nd my mum. I was too young to live by myself in a Kmart store, even though there was everything a kid needed here; toys, clothes and lollies.
After a while a voice came over the store speaker, if there is a young boy named Steven in the store your mother is at the front counter. I went up the front and there she was. My mum found me.
There is nothing worse than feeling lost. If you feel lost, it doesn’t matter how many people are around, you feel isolated. There are lots of people that feel lost in
life, emotionally and spiritually. And like that 4-year-old boy they are running around searching for the answer, but looking in all the wrong places. When we feel lost, it is easy to feel forgotten. The question is ‘How do we cope when we feel forgotten?’ this feeling is all about perspective, how do we cope with this perspective of ‘feeling’ lost and forgotten?
There are three areas of our life that can give us the feeling of being lost and forgotten. But it must be said that just because we feel that way doesn’t mean that it is the reality. So let us explore these three areas and see what the scriptures tell us.
We can feel lost and forgotten in our community
Isolation is a massive issue in our communities these days. The Jews were dragged off into exile and isolation in the Old Testament. However, we create it for ourselves. We fence ourselves into our own private exile, and we wonder why we feel so alone.
The scriptures tell us that this is not a functional way to live for us:
“so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:5 (NIV)
Maybe you feel like you are isolated. Maybe you feel that you are not connected anywhere, or that you are cut off from people. If you feel like this, the question then is ‘are you where God wants you to be?’ Because sometimes
we are isolated because we have got ourselves outside of God’s will. But even still, if we open ourselves up to God, He can manoeuvre us (just like what He did for Esther in the scriptures) to a useful position even in the isolation.
We can feel lost and forgotten by people
We are all affected by people. We all have expectations on one another and when these expectations aren’t met, we feel let down and abandoned, whether these thoughts are rational or not.
“Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.” Psalm 27:10-11 (NIV)
Do you feel like you have been abandoned by someone in your life? Is it something that you wrestle with?
We can feel lost and forgotten by God. Feeling like your forgotten by God can be so life disorienting. But once again this is a perception thing rather than a reality.
It is so easy to feel abandoned by God when you feel that your prayers aren’t being answered, when you feel nothing when you come to Church, when life feels diffi cult, when bad things are happening, when you feel lost and forgotten in your community, when you feel lost and forgotten by people. but these feeling are never a reality.
Not Forgotten
22 August 2018
Perhaps Jesus is the only one to really know what it is to be truly abandoned, because of what He bore on the cross.
Perhaps you feel like you have been abandoned by God. You sense that He is ignoring you or avoiding your cries to Him. Let me tell you He has not and will not ever forget you. We might at times get cut off and be feel lost and forgotten by people and situations, but God will never forget any of us.
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.” Psalm 139:16-17
Maybe you can understand what it is to feel forgotten or abandoned. How do you overcome the feeling of isolation, abandonment and being forgotten? Let me give you three things:
(1). Be honest and acknowledge your feelings – Admitting it to yourself is so important and the fi rst step to healing.
(2). Be prepared to give up your feelings - Don’t let a victim mentality enable you to wallow in the feelings of being forgotten. Let it go.
(3). Come before God and let Him do a healing work – 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
The good news is that these feelings don’t need to defi ne you, and they defi nitely don’t disqualify you from being used by God. Be encouraged that you are not and will not be forgotten by God.
In faith, hope and love

Our church has had a presence in Geelong for over 60 years with a great history of planting churches and reaching out
in the community with the Gospel. We continue to build on the heritage established over the years with the desire to spread the Gospel further through more church planting and mission overseas and in our local communities. Our congregation is a diverse group of people who have a hunger for prayer and worship. Our aim is that in everything we do in the life of our church we glorify God.
