Saturday, July 16, 2016 found a caravan of 13 vehicles with 21 people heading west to their Cairo destination. Making the Sat-urday trek were: Richard & Linda Run-nells; Jerry Ellis; Bill Higgins; Bob & Susan Raffaele; Logan & Maria Birdsong; Walt Prettyman; Chris Dooley; Ed & Annette Woodruff; Dan & Chris Bremer; Rick Hast-ings; Irene D’Amato; Paul & Sue Worth; Terry & Vicki Wilkinson and Geoff Hardy. It was a beautiful day to travel and, believe it or not, we made it through every red light without getting separated!
Inside the museum, members were ooo-ing and aahing at the vast amount of differ-ent type items found on display. There were beautiful antique cars, motorcycles, scooters, bicycles, fire engines and much, much more. There were manikins in pe-riod-correct attire scattered throughout the displays. Hundreds of scale models of all type vehicles. Different pieces of period-correct furniture displayed throughout the exhibits.
Wayne and Rose Ann Hadden, owners, have done an excellent job in assembling, displaying and maintaing the museum. They are constantly on the look out for ad-ditional items to add to their collection. It looks like they will have to add a fifth building to accommodate any more items.
After finishing the museum tour, SGCCC Members ad-journed to Mr. Chick Restau-rant to relax and eat. Mr. Chick is owned by Wayne and Rose Ann and is on the same grounds with the museum. The food was outstanding and enjoyed by all. After completing our meal, we bid the Haddens Good-Bye and headed back to Val-dosta. Eve-ryone was pleased with the day’s event and several said it warranted a return visit.

Minutes President’s Report

August and the Dog Days of Summer -- hot, humid
and dry -- what else could one ask for? I know -- Are
you ready for some football? High school and pre-
season pro starts in early to mid August with the col-
lege season right around the corner. For local fans, this
season will be a little different. Due to restructuring of
the regions, gone are the days of playoff birth place-
ment struggles between Valdosta and Lowndes High --
the Winnersville Classic will take on a new flavor --
gone are the late October games -- now. It is only for
bragging rights as the game is now early in the season.
It will, however, still be a game to look forward to and
to cheer on your favorite team.
All of our monthly cruise-ins were hot but very
enjoyable. They were well attended but I and others
would certainly like to see the numbers increase. Our
first 3rd Saturday Drive and Dine was a big success.
We had a great drive to Cairo to visit the Mr. Chick
Auto and Fire Department museum and to dine at Mr.
Chick. See Logan’s article complete with pictures in
this newsletter.
Up-coming activities for club members and guests
include our monthly meeting scheduled on Tuesday,
August 2nd at Austin’s Steak House from 6 to 8pm.
Our second Saturday of the month cruise-in at Steak
’N Shake will be on August 13th from 5 to 8 pm. The
Third Thursday cruise-in for August will be the 18th
from 5 to 7:30pm at the Dairy Queen on Inner Perime-
ter Rd. These events are open to all car clubs or indi-
viduals that wish to display their vehicles. And our 3rd
Saturday Drive and Dine is scheduled for the 20th --
details to be sent out later. Our Fall Car show is right
around the corner. The show is scheduled for Satur-
day, November 5th at 5 Points -- we all need to concen-
trate our efforts to ensure a successful show.
Keep you your copy of the Driver’s Seat handy to
refresh you memory of up-coming events. Let’s all
have a great month.

Alaska Trip
- Annette Woodruff
Ed and I recently had the wonderful
opportunity to spend two weeks ex-
ploring Alaska. We visited Fairbanks,
Anchorage, Wasilla, Seward, Valdez,
North Pole, and of course, Denali Na-
tional Park.
My son, Will, and his wife Penny, live
in Alaska and planned the whole trip as
a gift to us. This was the first time that
Ed had been to Alaska, but I lived there
before the earthquake hit in 1964. It
was amazing to see how Anchorage had
changed, and to see that my old high
school was still standing.
Fairbanks has many places of interest
that we enjoyed visiting. The last news-
letter had pictures that were taken at
the Fountainhead Antique Auto Mu-
seum. There were cars there that Ed
had never seen. I especially enjoyed
seeing the many authentic, period
dresses.
We visited an Ice Museum in Fair-
banks that had beautiful sculptures
taken from the last International Ice
Sculpting Competition that is held in
March of each year. We were told that
people come from all over the world to
participate in this event. The guide
carved a sculpture of a flower while we
watched. It couldn’t have taken him
more than 10 minutes to complete it. I
was definitely glad that they provided
parkas because they kept it around 20
degrees.
The next day we drove to Chena Hot
Springs and spent the day relaxing in
the inside and outside hot pools. They
were both wonderful. They had a huge
Ice Igloo there that had more beautiful
sculptures and was also about 20 de-
grees. One of the sculptures was a big
curved bar complete with benches that
were covered with fur. And yes, they
also provided parkas.
Denali was our next day-trip. We
had to leave about 4 a.m. to get there
for one of the first morning tour buses.
You can only drive a private vehicle 15
miles into the park to cut down on traf-
fic and litter. The tour we picked went
in 66 miles on the very windy, gravel
road that was an eight-hour roundtrip.
The total length of the road is 92 miles
and would take about 13 hours round-
trip. We saw sheep, caribou, moose,
and bears, and had a fantastic bus driver
that was really more like a tour guide.
She explained everything and stopped
whenever someone spotted any type of
animal. It was a very long and very
wonderful day.
Next came a trip to an above ground
historic gold mine so we could see how
mining was done years ago. We road
the Tanana Valley Railroad to get to the
very large gold dredge, that we could
go inside and explore, and then we got
to pan for gold ourselves. Those little
flakes unbelievable added up to $27.00
worth.
We also stopped by the Alaska pipe-
line that goes 800 miles from Prudhoe
Bay to Valdez. It crosses three moun-
tain ranges and more than 500 rivers
and streams and was completed in 26
months at a cost of $8 billion in 1977.
It was surprising to realize that there
are many places that you can go right
up to the pipeline and touch it. They
have a sign on it warning people not
climb on the pipeline because you might
fall and injure yourself. It is amazing
that they really have to tell people that.
Saturday was the big day that we had
waited several months for. We visited
the Pogo Gold Mine where my son and
his wife work. Once a year they have
family day and welcome the families of
their employees. They actually took us
into the mine and the mill where the
gold is processed. They were both
very cold and noisy. We got to hold
gold bars valued at well over a million
dollars. Ed just couldn’t figure out a
way to bring them home. The mine
Alaska Trip (Continued)
operates 24 hours a day and produces
a million dollars worth of gold every
day. Guess there is still a lot of gold in
those hills!
Monday was another early day. We
went deep-sea fishing out from Seward.
Ed was grinning ear-to-ear after he
caught a halibut weighing about 50
pounds. We are enjoying all the fish
that they caught that day.
After a couple of days in Anchorage,
we drove down to Valdez. There is
not much to the town of Valdez but
the drive there is breath taking. There
are many
beautiful
mountains
and water-
falls. We
also were
able to see
several gla-
ciers in this
area of
Alaska.
We arrived back in the sunny south
very tired, but with many wonderful
memories and pictures to share. It was
a trip of a lifetime.

Summer is a time for vacations, trips, excursions,
cruises and much, much more. But August is here,
and school will be starting very soon. The local
schools are starting up the first week of August and
the colleges get into full swing by mid-month. We
need to be careful commuting as there will be many
school children being transported by buses (they will
be at the bus stops waiting as many of us go to work
in the morning) and there will be many college stu-
dents as drivers and pedestrians around the VSU
campus. So let’s all keep our eyes open for these
young people. They are our future.
There are reports in this issue on a couple of events
our club has been involved in. Thanks to Logan Bird-
song for the pictures and report of the Drive and
Dine to Cairo. Thanks to Dan Glenn for pictures
from the Spirit of the Suwannee Ultimate Care Show.
Annette Woodward provided and article and photos
of the trip she and Ed took to Alaska this summer.
There is not room enough to share all the photos she
provided, but it lseems to have been a wonderful ex-
perience for them.
Becky and I took a two week trip through Georgia,
Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and
Florida this past month. The photo in the cover was
taken in Hope, Arkansas,
across the street from the
Visitor’s Information Center.
Keep those reports coming—
