PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We the people of St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church bring together diverse giſts and backgrounds to form a growing vibrant community centered in the Eucharist, the source and sign of our unity. In pilgrimage to the Kingdom of God, our mission is to demonstrate God's presence and love through: worshipping together, spreading the Good News, serving others, and enjoying Christ-Centered acvies. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are commied to sharing our me, our talents, and our treasures to fulfill God's will for our parish. AUGUST 2, 2020 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflections on today's Gospel MATTHEW 14:13—21 (Isaiah 55:1-3; Psalms 145; Romans 8:35, 37-39) KEY VERSE: "Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counng women and children" (v. 21). TO KNOW: The long awaited Messiah was expected to be a prophet like Moses (Dt 18:15-18). It was hoped that he would repeat the wonders of the Exodus when Moses fed the people with "manna" in the desert (Ex 16:15). Likewise, the prophet Elisha miraculously fed a hundred people (2 Kgs 4:43-44). All four evangelists tell the story of Jesus and the mulplicaon of the loaves in the desert, which emphasized its importance as foreshadowing the Eucharist. The words "take, bless, break, and give" are sll used in the Eucharisc liturgy today. Jesus gave the bread to the disciples and the disciples gave it to the crowd. Jesus worked through the hands of his followers that day, and he sll does. It is true that the disciples were incapable of feeding so many on their own, but it is also true that the Lord needs people so he can act. Jesus says: "Come to me; bring me whatever you have, no maer how small, and I will use it greatly in my service." In the hands of Jesus, the lile we have is always much. Jesus provided an over- abundance of bread for his hungry people. There were twelve baskets of fragments remaining, which may point beyond the Last Supper to the banquet of the Messiah at the final coming of the kingdom.. TO LOVE: What small steps can I take to help alleviate the problem of world hunger? TO SERVE: Lord Jesus, thank you for being my food for life's journey. 1386 S. AUGUST 2, 2020 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reflections on today's Gospel

MATTHEW 14:13—21 (Isaiah 55:1-3; Psalms 145; Romans 8:35, 37-39)

KEY VERSE: "Those who ate were about five thousand men,

not counting women and children" (v.

All four evangelists tell the story of Jesus and the multiplication of the loaves in the desert, which emphasized its importance as foreshadowing the Eucharist. The words "take, bless, break, and give" are still used in the Eucharistic liturgy today. Jesus gave the bread to the disciples and the disciples gave it to the crowd. Jesus worked through the hands of his followers that day, and he still does. It is true that the disciples were incapable of feeding so many on their own, but it is also true that the Lord needs people so he can act. Jesus says: "Come to me; bring me whatever you have, no matter how small, and I will use it greatly in my service." In the hands of Jesus, the little we have is always much. Jesus provided an over-abundance of bread for his hungry people.

We are so glad you joined us! If you are new to our parish, we would like to invite you to become a member.

The Welcome Booth in the vestibule is open the first full weekend of every month or come by the Parish Office.

Visit our website for a registration form or more information.

During this difficult time in our community, we have served many families that have never needed food pantry assistance before. Our pantry needs have continued to grow with more demand in specific areas. As you can

understand, there is a need for disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and surgical masks and gloves. We are also in need of all toiletry items and general household supplies.

As for the food supply, our most needed item is meat. If you are able to donate any quantities of fresh or frozen meat, direct from grocery store to Saint Raphael pantry, please call the church office to set an appointment so the food pantry will be able to transfer the meat immediately into freezer space. We ask that you do not bring meat from home freezers as this could potentially create a health risk. Thank you for your continued support. For appointment please call 479-756-6711.

STILL OUT OF THE PARISH FOR A FEW MORE WEEKS: Through Tuesday, August 11th late night. As most of you know, my mother, who lives in Hot Springs, has been struggling with dementia for the last 4 years. She still lives at home. She receives the daily care that is needed and my sister who lives close by has been in charge of my mother’s healthcare. To give my sister and her husband a break from their routine, my brother Kevin and I have been filling in while they are on vacation. My brother & I are covering the time between July 13- August 10. I will be there two weeks. Part of that time I will be with my brother and will occupy our time by working around the house on things that need repair, clean-ing or simply to be thrown way. The last 8 days, I will be with my mom by myself. This is an opportunity to spend some time with her and to take care of her as she took care of me over 60 years ago.

After finishing my time with my mom, I will attend the Chrism Mass in Little Rock on the 10th (postponed from April 5th) and then the Diaconate ordination of Alex Smith in Jacksonville on the 11th. Fr Ramos, Fr Jon and I will also attend the priestly ordination of two new diocesan priests on Saturday, August 15th in Little Rock. I will be back in the office on Monday, August 17th. It is also my hope that we can resume a limited daily Mass schedule by then as well. Even though I will be out of town for a good part of 3 weeks, I will be able to respond to emails, texts, and phone calls.

OFFICE APPOINTMENTS: It has come to my attention that many of you believe I do not take appointments, that I am unapproachable, or I am too busy to meet with my parishioners. I assure you; nothing is further than the truth. I do have one exception: Marriage counsel-ing, because long ago I learned as a young priest that is not my area of expertise. I do take appointments especially with parishioners who have concerns or questions. If you desire an appointment, call the office, and speak to Lizzette Castrellon at St Raphael or Paul Scouten at St Joseph. Living in these days of pandemic, it may be via Facetime or Zoom, but you can make an appointment me. You can

always email as well at [email protected] with your concern or questions and I promise I will respond.

V O L U N T E E R S A R E S T I L L N E E D E D Both opportunities are easy and still allow you to attend Mass.

and wants to learn more about the Church, our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation) classes will begin this fall.

if you are interested in the class and we will stay in touch about the nature of classes in 2020-2021.

Gospel Reflection from Alex Smith —Our Summer Seminarian

Jesus is with us always This week is my last week here at the parish, and it is sad to be leaving. I had a great time experiencing the fraternity of priesthood and a glimpse of parish life. However, I am also happy because I am going back home to be ordained as a transitional deacon to the priesthood on Tuesday, August 11th. Then, I go off to finish my final year of school so that hopefully, I can be an ordained priest for the Diocese of Little Rock next May. Man, the time has flown! Throughout my journey, if there is one thing that has kept me grounded is realizing that the good Lord is always with me through it all. In this Wednesday’s Gospel Jn 11:19-27, Saint Martha teaches us the same. Jesus, the Son of God, is with us always.

The Gospel reading displays Martha’s deep faith in Jesus. First, she believes had Jesus been present during Lazarus’ illness, Jesus could have healed him, and her brother would not have died. Secondly, Martha believes that even though her brother has been dead for four days, Jesus can still work a miracle. Martha doesn’t ask directly for her brother to be restored to life but entrusts every-thing entirely to Jesus. She believes in the resurrection on the last day. Martha knows that her brother, who heard the Word of God and believed in the Son, sent by the Father, will rise on that last day. Additionally, Martha believes that those who live in Jesus and believe in Him will never die. Finally, Martha believes that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming in the world. St. Martha is a great example of faith and trust in Jesus. Martha’s faith is what we are called to profess and live as Christians. We pray that God may strengthen our faith in Him and find our way to His glory. As I prepare for ordination, I hope to remember Mar-

tha’s words as I embark on the new chapter of my life. Also, I pray for you all to continue to hear and see Christ in your homes and community. Jesus is always with us. St. Martha intercedes for us.
