Bob West of Ore-gon, in second place with 73.4%, picked up $400.00, while Roger Vogel of California copped third money of $300.00 with 71.8%. High single game of the tournament went to Kuchcinski with 88%, followed closely by Bob West and 4th place finisher Alvin Richardson of Oregon with 86%. The current British Columbia champion, Sid Lash of Burnaby, B. C., took a resepctable 5th place with 62.9% and collected $100.00 for his effort.

Nelson C. Vogel The sudden passing of Nelson C. Vogel of Rte #1, Manito, Illinois, on May

27, has left the Illinois State Association a void that will be hard to replace. "Doc" as he was known to all his fellow pitchers and friends was without a

doubt one of the finest competitive pitchers in the country. He was one who never conceded until the last shoe was pitched and was ranked as a contender for any title that was at stake in any tournament.

He played in almost every major tournament in the country and was a high finisher in most of them. He competed in several World tournaments, the Eastern National, Corn Belt Open, Galesburg National Open, the Illinois State tournament and many others.

He was truly a fine sportsman and a grand person to have as a friend and neighbor. To all of those who have known "Doc", they will miss his genial greeting and smile. To him we say . . . .

Farewell dear friend, Such a life as Thine Has not been lived in vain, But has shed an influence rare, divine On lives that here remain.

He was a member of long standing of the Illinois State Horseshoe Pitchers' Association and the National Association. He also was a member of the Peoria, Illinois Horseshoe Club.

To his loving wife, Margaret, and his two sons, Ronald and Roger and his daughter, Marilee, the sincere sympathy of the Illinois State Association and the National Horseshoe Pitchers' Association with that of the Peoria Horse-shoe club, is extended in the loss of a loving husband and father.

Lewis Thurman Lynn of Elsmere, Kentucky, passed away June 4 after suf-fering a heart attack. He was 49 years old and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to each of them in their sorrow.

He was most active in the local leagues in and around Northern Kentucky for over ten years. He was well liked by his fellow horseshoe pitchers and friends for his great personality and his high respect for the game.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Ralph Fuller VFW Post. He also held membership in the National Horseshoe Pitchers' Association.

New England Director Reports Peter Shepard, Director

It was an extreme pleasure for me to attend the Keene, New Hampshire warm-up where I saw so many familiar faces and viewed the renewed en-thusiasm in horseshoe pitching. My congratulations to the Franklin Horse-shoe Club for sending 14 members to the tournament and the NHPA. A real great job done.

While attending the Connecticut Open held at New Canaan, Connecticut, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ervin Van Dine and discussed many prob-lems of common interest to all horseshoe pitchers. We had perfect weather for the tournament and throughly enjoyed meeting so many of the Massachu-setts players present. Congratulations are in order to the court keepers for doing such an outstanding job in keeping the pits in such fine condition on that particularly hot day. Congratulations to the winner of the Connecticut Open, Norm Rioux, for a job well done. During this past week, 13th of June, the lower classes also played at New Canaan, Connecticut. I wish to thank Mr. Van Dine for giving me the honor of presenting the trophies on this fine day.

If any NHPA member in the state of New Hampshire is interested in help-ing the Derry Recreation Department in enlarging their horseshoe courts it would certainly be appreciated. Mr. Cox, the director of recreation, in Derry, N. H., talked with me recently and advised that any and all help that the NHPA members could give would really be appreciated.

It was an added pleasure for me to stop at the West Side Horseshoe Club in West Springfield, Mass., and meet with your former New England Director, Mr. Ralph Forstrom, and also had the opportunity to meet Mr. Herferd.

I am pleased to announce that the Marlboro VFW Horseshoe Club, located in Marlboro, Mass., is now a member of the NHPA and boasts six beautiful courts that anyone is welcome to use. They are sending 15 members to the Massachusetts Open to be held June 20th and 27th.

It was a pleasure to visit the Quincy Horseshoe Club located in Quincy, Mass., and talk with Russ Sweeney. They have beautiful courts in Quincy which indicates a lot of hard work and dedication by the members of the Quincy club.

I would like to also state at this time how nice it was to meet with Roger Bolduc of the New England Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

Your director will be attending the World Horseshoe Tournaments to be held in Middlesex, New Jersey from July 30th through August 10th., and shall be staying at the Ivory Towers Motel in Greenbrook, New Jersey. Looking forward to meeting any and all NHPA members. It shall be my pleasure to serve you in any capacity required.

West Scampers Through Fathers1 Day Open At Salem, Oregon

A record turnout was on hand for the annual Father's Day Tournament at the Bush Pasture Park Courts in Salem, Oregon. Once again Bob West of Scappoose, Oregon was in peak form as he averaged over 84% to gain top honors. Twenty-two new NHPA members were signed up at the tournament, bringing Oregon's membership to an all-time high of 124. Classes G and H were pitched at the nearby Rickreall courts to alleviate the overcrowding. A good time was had by all and good court conditions led to several "personal bests" as far as tournament averages go.

Ed Holmberg In Successful Defense Of Western Montana Title

Ed Holmberg of Big Timber, Montana, successfully defended his Western Montana title despite losing the final game of the round robin match to Arnie Mosness also of Big Timber. This was the first of eight tournaments to be held in Western Montana. Of particular interest to all Montana pitchers is the fact that the annual Montana state tournament will be held in Billings, Mon-tana over the Labor Day weekend, instead of at Lewistown as previously an-nounced. It is open to all Montana pitchers who have participated in two or more tournaments.

Maylahn Wins Rain Soaked LaPorte, Indiana Open Ralph Maylahn of Wisconsin was in the lead when high winds, thunder

showers and a deluge of rain in the middle of the fifth round washed out the remainder of the LaPorte, Ind. Open. Doc Rookstool of Indiana and Jack Stout were tied for second. Class C was also washed out half way through the schedule.

Located in City Park in the middle of a grove of huge trees the twelve LaPorte courts are letter perfect in their construction, twelve feet apart with double walkways, perfect blue clay making them a horseshoe pitcher's dream come true.

The LaPorte club, headed by Gus Kuk and Del Hough, are in the process of installing lights and a chain link fence and are planning on hosting a couple of big open events each year in the future. This was the courts first formal competition and NHPA President Ralph Dykes said he had never seen better courts or clay.

Ron Tonneson, second year pitcher of the Golden Gate Club, won 7 straight to win Group 2 by three full games over veteran Bruce McVicar, an-other youngster of 75 years, who posted the high percentage in Group 2.

Robin Grimley led an all Santa Clara County Junior Boys group by edging brother Stephen, and won 5 straight games. Marisela Mauricio of the Santa Clara County Club and Northern California Women's champion, led by deci-sive margins in every game to win over Debbi Jensen of Seaside.
