from tHe Pastor

Dear Friends,

I want to call your attention to the letter from Archbishop Schnurr in this bulletin on pages 7 & 8. In that letter, the Archbishop outlines the church’s historical stance for the dignity of all humanity and the need to address our broken immigration system which dehumanizes our fellow human beings, who, like us, are members of the Body of Christ. The Archbishop calls on us Catholics and people of good will everywhere to tell the Administration and Congress to prioritize the lives and dignities of migrants and “to restore order to our broken immigration system.” In addition, he asks that we accompany these actions with our prayers.

Next week we will be welcoming our annual Mission Appeal speakers as part of the Mission Cooperative Plan from the Archdiocese. This plan provides missionaires and representatives of mission dioceses to speak to parishes within our Archdiocese, explaining the needs in those areas. Speakers representing the Diocese of Puerto Escondido in Mexico will be here next weekend.

Puerto Escondido was established as a diocese in 2014. It is located on the southwest corner of Mexico in the state of Oaxaca. Oaxaca is considered the poorest state of Mexico. The town of Puerto Escondido was founded in 1940. It is a long stretch of white sandy beaches with one of the top surfing beaches in the world. It quickly moves into mountainous terrain. They have a minor seminary—which the MCP supports—with over 25 boys. Many of them come from mountain villages where they speak an indigenous language. They must learn Spanish so that they can go to school. Several years ago we help them purchase a bus so that they could transport the boys back and forth to the federal school.

There are approximately 30 priests each serving one municipality and 20-40 village churches. Transportation in the mountains is often by truck, horse back, or on foot. Sacraments are not celebrated often.

Thank you in advance for your welcome, your prayers and your generousity to support the great work of our missionaries.

God bless,

Fr. Tom

Food from the Heart Collection Bins will be in the gatheirng space August 17 & 18Summertime is hard on families with children who are struggling with food insufficiency. Children are out of school and no longer receive free lunch or breakfast. Our collection also receives less as parishioners are on vacation or busy with summer activities. Please remember the Food from the Heart over the summer. The kids will thank you. Donations can also be brought to the SEM Pantry located in the basement of the IHM “old office” building on our campus. Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 10 am-2pm and Tuesday evening 5:30-7 pm. Many thanks to our volunteers who deliver the collection on the Monday morning after the weekend bins are filled. Help is always needed, just come around 9:15 am. No glass items due to breakage. Volunteers are always welcome at the pantry. Call Charlie Gentry at 513-300-8173 if you or a teen has time to help. Monetary donations are even more helpful and checks can be sent to SEM Pantry 1260 Columbus Ave. Cincinnati OH 45255. Fresh produce from home gardens can also be brought directly to the pantry. Please do not bring on the collection Sunday as it might spoil.

You may have met the Alhamoud family at one of the Mountains to the Sea luncheons, the festival, volunteering at our meal packing event last fall or after Mass at Donuts with the Alhamouds. As you may recall, the Alhamouds had to flee Syria because of the war and spent several years as refugees in Jordan before the State Department brought them to Cincinnati through Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement program. As a result of the upheaval in their lives and the accompanying disruption in the children’s education, we’ve recently learned of an urgent need for tutoring for the two oldest children who have suffered severe gaps in their education. They are currently enrolled in Huntington Learning Center which has assessed their needs and put together a plan to bring them up to their current grade level. If you are interested in assisting the Alhamouds with the tuition for Huntington, please contact Sue Keefe ([email protected]), Therese Hazzard ([email protected]) or Barb Szucsik, ([email protected]) or alternatively, you can send a check directly to Huntington Learning Center (3870 Paxton Ave, Suite E Cincinnati, OH 45209 Attn: Gonzalo) with a note in the memo line “For the Alhamoud Family”. Thank you.

My Dear Friends in Christ:

We are all aware of the tremendous human suffering that continues to be created by our broken immigration system. Our deep, abiding belief in the dignity of every human person and our commitment to serve especially those who are marginalized and oppressed demand that we use our prophetic voice to speak up about the dire situation at our borders, in our communities and across the world.

Below you will find a letter that we would like shared across our Archdiocese. As you can see in the letter, draft letters are available on the Social Action webpage for parishioners to use to contact their elected officials.

The Social Action Office, Catholic Charities of Southwest Ohio and Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley will be sending the letter out through their networks in an attempt to garner additional support.

Thank you for your support of this effort. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit continues to inspire the faithful of our Archdiocese to act with compassion in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Sincerely yours in Christ,Most Reverend Dennis M. SchnurrArchbishop of Cincinnati

My Dear Friends in Christ,

The Catholic Church globally, including this Archdiocese locally, has consistently and outspokenly urged all nations to protect the lives and dignities of migrants and to establish orderly immigration systems. For too long now, the crisis of migrants having to flee dire poverty and appalling violence around the world has sadly not improved. Nor, it seems, has many nations’ ability to respond in a compassionate and orderly fashion. There are so many social concerns that trouble the conscience of the Church right now, such as abortion, gun violence and the state of the environment to name a few. But I write again on this concern of immigration for two main reasons:

First, we are relentlessly experiencing the dehumanizing impact of our own nation’s broken immigration system in many of our parishes, schools, social services, and communities. Each day we see our own families being separated, traumatized children from the border coming to us for help, local refugee communities unable to bring their loved ones out of refugee camps elsewhere, and the lives of our neighbors devastated by human trafficking. For us, the issue is personal.

Secondly, as our country devolves into an increasingly polarized culture, migrants are God’s gift to remind us that we are one body in Christ. As we so tragically saw in El Paso, fear and hatred of immigrants are driving people to indiscriminately kill their neighbors. Our own salvation, however, is steeped in our hearts’ desires to unify humanity in God’s love. And, among other tests in our daily lives, this is being measured by our willingness to respond to the extreme needs of those coming to our nation’s doorstep, like Lazarus crawling to the rich man’s house (Lk 16:19-31) and like the Holy Family seeking shelter from Herod’s persecution (Mt 2:13-23). In every migrant seeking freedom from persecution, can we imagine ourselves in their footsteps? Can we see in them the face of Christ?

For these reasons, I reaffirm our call to all Catholics and people of goodwill to take action. I encourage us again to tell the Administration and Congress to prioritize the lives and dignities of migrants and to restore order to our broken immigration system.

A fundamental challenge of our modern-day immigration system is that there are simply too few legal and orderly paths for migrants to come here to begin with. Over the last several months, policies have been suggested and enacted that, unfortunately, are making the situation even worse. Several efforts aim to drastically restrict our country’s asylum policies, limiting people’s lawful right to seek refuge and protection in our country. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops recently exclaimed, “It is contrary to American and Christian values to attempt to prevent people from migrating here when they are fleeing to save their lives and to find safety for their families.” Another threat that is being discussed in our government is reducing to zero the number of refugees permitted into our country in 2020. Our country has historically welcomed tens of thousands of refugees every year. In fact, since World War II the U.S. has welcomed more refugees than any other country - over two million people have proudly become part of the diverse fabric of American life. In the last 25 years, the refugee ceiling has hovered around 80,000, but in 2017 the number was dropped to 50,000; in 2018 it was dropped to 45,000, and this year it is set at 30,000. Bishop Joe Vasquez, Chair of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Migration, points out that “This recent report, if true, is disturbing and against the principles we have as a nation and a people. The world is in the midst of the greatest humanitarian displacement crisis in almost a century... Eliminating the refugee resettlement program leaves refugees in harm’s way and keeps their families separated across continents.” Rather than ending the program, the U.S. Bishops are urging us to restore the program to its historic norms of an annual resettlement goal of 95,000.” I strongly encourage you to reach out to your elected officials, especially those in the U.S. Congress, and demand that they take comprehensive action to fix our broken immigration system. As Cardinal DiNardo writes, “a just solution to this humanitarian crisis should focus on addressing the root causes that compel families to flee and enacting a humane reform of our immigration system.” The Archdiocese is making available letters which you can sign and send to our elected officials at www.catholiccincinnati.org/socialaction. I also entreat you to pray and to support the ministries of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio (www.ccswoh.org) and Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley (www.cssmv.org), which regularly serve the needs of countless vulnerable populations in our Archdiocese, including migrants and refugees.

Thank you for your openness to this appeal. May our merciful response to make our nation more just both for current U.S. citizens and for those seeking a new life here reflect our eternal desire to be unified in the Body of Christ.

Bring faith to life. Find life in faith.

IMPACTAUGUST, 2019

Do you ever pause to think about faith? It is not uncommon for friends to advise us in moments of trial, “You just have to have faith,” as though saying this will make it so. Yet faith is not something we possess, nor is it to be taken for granted. Having faith in difÞcult times Ñ and the ordinary moments of life for that matter Ñ requires us to trust that God is real and desires a deep, intimate relationship with us. Not only this: we have the promise of the Holy Spirit, who Þlls our hearts with the truth of GodÕs inÞnite love.

Faith is a gift. It is a response to the grace of God, who created us with an inborn hunger to know him. When we respond to this grace, we come to believe in God and give God a meaningful place in our lives.

Many people see faith as a denial of reason. Yet, faith and reason stand together. It is God who created everything that exists; God who is revealed through scientiÞc exploration and in the beauty of the world around us; and God who is present in the mystery of ChristÕs love, poured out in word and sacrament, available for us to receive it with humble hearts.

Assured that God is always present, let us be prepared to take a “leap of faith!” May we live and grow as GodÕs grace-Þlled people, ready to share the inÞnite love of God and the many blessings of our lives, including the gift of faith, as good and faithful stewards. We will not be disappointed!

“Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.”

—St. Augustine

Impact this Month Reßect on your life and faith this month:

¥ Open your mind and heart to GodÕs loving presence and ask the Lord to guide you in this time of reßection.

¥ Look for evidence of God’s love and presence in your life, the Eucharist, Sacrament of Reconciliation, relationships, and the beauty of creation.

¥ Consider the place God has in your life. While we can never fully grasp GodÕs incredible love for us, our faith and trust in God often ebbs and ßows with the ups and downs of daily life. What most challenges your faith? Who or what helps your faith to be strengthened and grow?

¥ Bring faith to life. Look for new ways to nurture faith. Let the inßuence of faith shape your daily decisions, the way you use your time, serve others, and share your many gifts.

¥ Find life in faith. Be attentive to the ways faith makes a difference in your life. Share this good news with others.

¥ Thank God for the gift of faith!

!2 Bring faith to life. Find life in faith.

Do you sometimes feel like you’re hanging on to faith or the Church by a thread? Perhaps

there is a persistent, nagging feeling that you just can’t lose that leaves you wondering if faith really matters. Or, like many, it could be that belonging to a parish or regularly coming to Mass is just not high on your list of priorities. Or is on the list at all. Maybe you are a friend, parent, or grandparent of someone who feels this way.

This month, we celebrate the feasts of Saints Monica and Augustine, who have much to teach us about these things. Like many young people today, Augustine did not see the need for faith or the Church in his younger years. His mother, Monica prayed for and stayed near to him, hoping that some day he would turn toward the Lord. While Augustine focused on his career and social life, he continued to search for something greater that would give his life meaning. Eventually, through the teaching of St. Ambrose and a profound moment of encounter with God, Monica’s prayers were answered. Her son became a man of deep faith, whose life was transformed.

If you struggle with faith or the Church, follow Augustine’s lead and remain open. Talk with others whose faith is strong; ask them to share the role of faith in their lives, and take their witness to heart. If someone close to you feels distant from the Lord or the Church, remember Monica, be present, listen, and pray for him or her. The struggle is real. God is with us through it all.

Often, we need to understand the time in which the gospels were written in order to apply Jesus’ message to our life and time. This month, however, we may feel as though Jesus is speaking directly to us with a timely and challenging message: “where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Lk 12:34)

What do you really treasure? When we read the gospels carefully, we see that it is not having things that is inherently negative. Being greedy is, since “one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Lk 12:15)

Where is your heart? As you think about this, it is important to be honest. Brutally honest. It is easy to say, ÒGod comes Þrst, relationships next, and then other things in

life fall into place,” but when we look at the way we spend our time or money, we may realize that other things have become our priority. Jesus guards us against making the accumulation of things our goal.

While we may think for a time that things lead to happiness and security, we eventually come to see that chasing after the things, the job, or the house inevitably leads to disappointment and disillusionment. Like the man who built larger barns to store all of his harvest, planning to sit back, “eat, drink, and be merry,” we learn to appreciate that being rich is less about material wealth and more about being “rich in what matters to God.”

If our lives are focused on things, we are sure to Þnd ourselves longing for something more. The more for which our heart aches is the love of our Lord and a life Þlled with meaning that is only possible through faith. When we put God Þrst, everything else does fall into place. Freed from the incessant chase after more things, we realize that, as the axiom reminds us, the most important things in life aren’t things at all!

“Our hearts are restless, Lord, until they rest in you.” — St. Augustine
