Security paper is a paper that incorporates features that can act to identify orauthenticate a document as original, e.g. watermarks or invisible fibers in paper, orfeatures that demonstrate tamper evidence when fraud is attempted, e.g., toremove or alter print such as amounts or signatures on a cheque. The securitypaper market size is estimated to grow to USD 16.37 billion by 2021, at a CAGrof 6.0% from 2016. The base year considered for the study is 2015, and the marketsize is projected from 2016 to 2021.

Cheque paper that is used with software that prints not just the usual payee, amount and date but also the headings, lines, payor, bank and mICr encoding.Postage stamp paper is the foundation or substrate of the postage stamp to whichthe ink for the stamp's design is applied to one side and the adhesive is applied tothe other. The paper is not only the foundation of the stamp but it has also beenincorporated into the stamp's design, has provided security against fraud and hasaided in the automation of the postal delivery system.

There are two main ways of producing watermarks in paper; the dandy rollprocess, and the more complex cylinder mould process. Dandy roll can be definedas a cylinder of wire gauze pressed on moist pulp before it starts through the rollersof a papermaking device and resulting in the production of a watermark. Also calleddandy roller.

Holograms are a bit like photographs that never die. They're sort of"photographic ghosts", they look like three-dimensional photos that have somehowgot trapped inside glass, plastic, or metal. Holograms made by individuals areusually exposed on very high resolution photographic film coated with a silverhalide emulsion. Holograms made for mass production are exposed on a glassplate pretreated with iron oxide and then coated with photoresist. The photoresistmaterial will chemically react to the specific wavelength of light that will be used tocreate the hologram. Today, the most common use of holograms is in consumerproducts and advertising materials. Holograms can be created without visible light.Ultraviolet, x-ray, and sound waves can all be used to create them. Until the 1980s,holograms were a slightly wacky scientific idea. Then someone found a way ofprinting them onto metallic film and they became an incredibly important form ofsecurity. Holographic Imaging market size was over USD 300 million in 2016, withgrowth forecast of over 30% CAGr from 2017 to 2024.

rFID tagging is an ID system that uses small radio frequency identificationdevices for identification and tracking purposes. An rFID tagging system includesthe tag itself, a read/write device, and a host system application for data collection, processing, and transmission. An rFID tag (sometimes called an rFIDtransponder ) consists of a chip , some memory and an antenna . rFID smartlabels combine a variety of inlays (each having a unique chip, bonding wire, andantenna) with a variety of printable materials to make them suitable for a widerange of applications in a wide range of environments.

bar codes are printed directly on the paper or plastic objects. bar codetechnology works on optics principles, whereas rFID technology works on theprinciple of rF waves. Since the rFID tags contains memory elements and inbarcodes the information is only printed in some sort of codes so the amount ofinformation which can be stored in rFID is significantly greater than barcodes.

rFID Tags market was valued at $4.66 billion in 2016 and is projected to reach$13.65 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGr of 14.5 % from 2017 to 2024.by type,Passive rFID, generated the highest revenue share of $3.25 billion in 2016,growing at a CAGr of 13.8% in the global rFID market.

The radio frequency identification (rFID) market has long been seen as a hugebusiness. In the early 2000s, Walmart said that it expected to mandate rFID on allof its deliveries. However, the technology wasn’t quite ready yet. Today is adifferent story. rFID has become a force in the retail space, particularly in appareland shoes, with the potential for excellent growth in this market. meanwhile, thereare plenty of other markets - healthcare and automotive, just to name two - whererFID could pick up significant business. All in all, rFID is well positioned for thecoming years.

PaperWorks Industries Installs NewKomori Lithrone GX40

To ensure that a new W&H line fits into a customer'sproduction hall, the machines are replicated to scale in 3D ona computer or tablet. In the construction phase W&Htherefore uses an innovative configuration tool, whichsimulates the real hall conditions of a customer byintegrating 3d data. With just a few clicks, this tool can checkthe fit of a W&H machine in the existing productionenvironment. This reduces travel costs and saves time duringthe project phase, especially as the project can be discussedremotely.A full-grown VAREX II blown film line with the workingwidth 3200 mm, can reach a height of over 15 meters andbecome over 12 meters long and scarcely nine meters wide.So that a plant fits later also really into a production hall, measure must be taken exactly. To ensure this fit, W&H usesa new and innovative configuration tool that can reproduceextrusion lines and hall conditions true to scale in threedimensions. This innovative configuration tool isparticularly flexible in the 3d environment: it directly checksfor possible collisions between the machine and the hall. "Inthe event of collisions indicated by the computerconfigurations, we can react quickly and flexibly reschedulea machine and adapt it accordingly in the constructiondepartment", says Sascha Asenheimer, software developer atW&H.

ModTek orders Dantex PicoColour digitalpressUS-based label manufacturer ModTek has ordered a DantexPicoColour digital press following a virtual demonstrationwithout having physically seen the press live prior to thesale due to pandemic restrictions, both in the US and theUK.Traditionally a flexo print house, ModTek has used digitalprint for a number of years, having upgraded an existingflexo press with a digital print module. Whilst this movehelped to develop market penetration, the durability of thepress, lightfastness and the lack of an opaque white createda number of issues. In addition, throughput of work on flexopresses is routinely hampered by amendments to graphicsand regulatory information on the first few productionrounds. These mid-production changes are costly andirritating to clients.‘With the issues we currently have, the PicoColour ticks allthe right boxes,’ Shawn R. Borman, ModTek’s owner.‘Dantex has proven to be a true partner with us in otherareas and has been very proactive. This excellent customerservice, combined with a reasonably priced press that offerslightfast, durable inks and the ability to fully convert labelsinline, proves to be a winning combination. Also, thePicoColour has a fantastic opaque white.

Austen £10 note – Commercialisation of new technologies drives growth in securityprinting

The unveiling of the latest polymer banknote design by the bank of england on 18 July is testament to theongoing demand for new technologies to continue to build growth in the security printing market.According to exclusive research from Smithers, banknote printing accounts for 35.8% of total value in a globalsecurity print market valued at $27.2 billion in 2017. TheFuture of Global Security Printing to 2022 forecastsstrong growth at 4.8% per annum to generate a total value of $34.3 billion in 2022.As the market develops across the next five years, there will be visible shifts both in end-user demands andcommercial technology which will influence the further penetration of new technologies, like polymer substratebanknotes.

Banknote innovationThe new £10 note featuring 19th centurynovelist british author Jane Austen is thesecond fully issuance note from the bank ofengland printed on a polymer substrate. Itincorporates a range of new security features,as well as improved lifecycle performance tobenefit both the bank and consumers. Thebank of england has already printed 275million of the new notes, and will release theminto circulation in September 2017. ThreeScottish issuing banks will release their newpolymer £10 issuances one year later.Central banks are increasingly moving to moredurable solutions including pure polymer substrates, paper/polymer composites, and superior varnishes andcoatings. Despite their expense, the prolonged lifecycle, due to their being harder to tear, waterproof and moreresistant to folding, soiling and microorganisms; means the transition to polymer can translate into significantsavings for issuing authorities. There are several additional advantages too:

Replicating the polymer substrate convincingly and copying newer security features, like clearwindows through the note present major new challenges for counterfeiters

Improved performance in ATMs and automated sorting operations and causes fewer mechanicaldefects

A lower environmental impact than traditional paper.

The Future of Global Security Printing to 2022 reveals that competition between polymer and other durablematerials will intensify over the next five years, leading to possible price drops.moves of this type are taking place within a wider context, including trends like removal of higher denominationnotes from circulation, either gradually as with the €500 note, or abruptly as with the Indian 500 and 1,000 rupeenotes; and the continuous refinement of security features and introduction of more bold designs.

Less cash societyDespite innovation, banknote production orders are dropping, principally because of the emergence of a less-cash society.modern consumers have many non-cash payment methods at their disposal – payment cards, direct debit, crypto currencies, digital wallets – that are easier and faster to use than cash. online commerce is booming, and peer-to-peer mobile payment methods are rapidly gaining traction. As a result, the ratio of cash to electronic payments is declining. While in most developed countries this simplymeans that the growth rate of cash is lower than that of non-cash, the expectation is that soon the use of anddemand for cash will decline in real terms. The UK Payments Council, for example, predicts that cash volumewill fall by 30% over the next ten years; and some stores in Denmark and the netherlands have already stoppedaccepting cash.

Besides the changing dynamics of payment use, Smithers analysis tracks and quantifies two othermajor shifts within the broader security print market.

The changing face of identityIDs are no longer considered the sole evidence of a person’s identity. Until the early 2000s a paper documentprotected by optical security features and issued by government authorities was the gold standard foridentification. Subsequently it was realised that passports were relatively easy to forge or for imposters to use,

and the need to drastically improve facilitation toprocess rapid growth in air travel, e-passportsincorporating biometrics were introduced. This wasfollowed by e-IDs, electronic driving licences andother electronic credentials. The expansion of digital mobile phone technology indeveloping countries has accelerated the emergenceof digital identification and the electronic delivery ofservices. In sub-Saharan Africa, more than half of thepopulation in some countries is without official ID, butmore than two-thirds of residents in the region have amobile phone subscription. Digitally based mobileplatforms can be used to register for, and access,

legal ID. It remains to be seen whether physical credentials will be leapfrogged altogether or if some form ofdocumentation will still be required. The drivers in the developed world, where virtually all people have at least one and usually multiple forms ofidentification, are different. The key challenge now as the capabilities of digital identity are advancing so rapidlyis to produce regulatory frameworks that ensure companies leading these technological advancements operatein an ecosystem that accounts fully for risk and privacy. There will be pose other new challenges to overcometoo, such as how to safeguard against increasing sophisticated photo manipulation software.once these barriers are overcome, use of physical ID documents may become much less common, and mayonly be employed once, on enrolment. And then operate as a real world anchor, while mobile devices twinnedwith biometrics become the primary identifier. This will also support a trend towards multi-function IDs, wherevarious government functions – travel, driver registration, voter representation and social security areincorporated into a single electronic ID – as has already been advanced by countries like Portugal.

Developing world – Solutions for inclusionFinancial inclusion is the term used for providing financial services to the world’s unbanked population, whichresides primarily in the developing world. About two billion adults globally are unbanked with more than halfresiding in South Asia, east Asia and the Pacific regions. This creates a host of issues for the governments of countries in these regions:

Cash-intensive economies often have a large shadow economy due to the anonymous nature ofbanknotes

The absence of an electronic payment infrastructure can lead to large-scale tax evasion, andthus a lack of federal income

Corruption and bribery is commonplace.

Digitising payments would enable account holders to make the payments in a way that is easier, more affordableand easier to track What is required is a long-term vision including:

Creating an electronic payment infrastructure (ATM, POS)Changing government wage payments and other transfers from cash to electronic bank accountsStimulating account usage through education, promotion and incentives.

The potential long-term impact of financial inclusion on the security printing industry cannot be underestimated.Initially, when cards or mobile phones are used to take cash out of a personal account, the market expands; butthen, when cards are used as the payment medium, demand for banknotes and can be expected to contract.
