AUDIENCE FEEDBACK SURVEY SAM MCNAMARA, ELLIE LOWES, BECKY MARSH QUESTION ONE: The song we have chosen to feature in our music video is around five minutes long. This is much longer than most and will therefore be much more challenging to fill with interesting shots. DO YOU THINK THAT IT WOULD BE WORTH CUTTING DOWN THE SONG? After conducting our audience research the overall response from the other groups is that the song should be significantly shortened to allow for shot variety and consistently interesting shots. This is because a video of around five minutes will require a huge amount of planning and footage and could easily turn into a random montage of irrelevant shots with no strong justification. QUESTION TWO: AFTER INITIALLY LISTENING TO OUR CHOSEN SONG, WHAT IDEAS CAME TO MIND? WHAT IMAGERY, CONCEPTS, NARRATIVES ETC. DOES THE SONG/STYLE SUGGEST? Montages, which link to certain words in the lyrics, were the most common suggestion from the audience feedback. This will require a rigorous and well thought out planning procedure to ensure that the shots do not become irrelevant to the narrative, which we have decided upon. Most of our results implied that a concept music video with elements of a narrative would work most effectively for the song chosen. This is because of the experimental music style alongside the storyline suggested by the lyrics. QUESTION THREE: DO YOU THINK OUR UNDERLYING NARRATIVE IDEA WOULD WORK? The general opinion gained through our audience feedback survey is positive and that our narrative idea would likely lead to a successful music video with interesting visuals. It was also suggested that we would need to work hard to ensure that our narrative was made as clear as possible as this

QUESTION ONE:

The song we have chosen to feature in our music video is around five minutes long.

QUESTION TWO:

AFTER INITIALLY LISTENING TO OUR CHOSEN SONG, WHAT IDEAS CAME TO

MIND? WHAT IMAGERY, CONCEPTS, NARRATIVES ETC. DOES THE

SONG/STYLE SUGGEST?

Montages, which link to certain words in the lyrics, were the most common suggestion from the audience feedback. This will require a rigorous and well thought out planning procedure to ensure that the shots do not become irrelevant to the narrative, which we have decided upon. Most of our results implied that a concept music video with elements of a

narrative would work most effectively for the song chosen. This is because of the experimental music style alongside the storyline suggested by the lyrics.

QUESTION THREE:

DO YOU THINK OUR UNDERLYING NARRATIVE IDEA WOULD WORK?

The general opinion gained through our audience feedback survey is positive and that our narrative idea would likely lead to a successful music video with interesting visuals. It was also suggested that we would need to work hard to ensure that our narrative was made as clear as possible as this is a difficulty due to the conceptual style of the video.

QUESTION FOUR:

HOW CAN WE MAKE OUR NARRATIVE CLEAR AND OBVIOUS THROUGH THE

CONCEPT?

Our feedback suggests that we should use more symbolic object and imagery in order to make our narrative as clear as possible through the concept. One suggestion was to use a mirror, which would smash and reflect light. Secondly to link to our relationship concept, another suggestion was a vase and flowers being smashed to represent the break up of the relationship. Keep the narrative simple to avoid audience confusion.

QUESTION FIVE:

WHAT AREAS/IDEAS OF OUR VIDEO LACKS STRENGTH AND HOW CAN WE

IMPROVE?

Page 2: Audience Feedback Survey - A2 Media Studies

The over all opinions are that our storyline is clear, we as a group do however need to ensure that the narrative remains non-complex. The video should be shorter than the full five-minute song. The video should still explore mature messages and themes and remain meaningful. Ensure shot variety and that the video remains interesting, both visually and conceptually, throughout. Finally, avoid making our video too abstract in terms of the imagery and concept.

QUESTION SIX:

DO YOU THINK THE ENDING MAKES IT CLEAR WHAT HAS HAPPENED?

Avoid making the ending too abstract, allow for narrative conventions to aid the audience in understanding the scene. Ensure clear shots are used. “The ending is brilliant.” – Jess Blades

QUESTION SEVEN:

DO YOU THINK WE SHOULD CUT THE SONG?

Yes, a video longer than three seconds will make it difficult to ensure shot variety is sustained – an interesting, and shorter video would keep the audience engaged. The amount of footage we would need would take a very long time to film.
