    6. ANALYSIS & DESIGN

    6.1 SYSTEM ANALYSIS

    At the heart of system analysis is a detailed understanding of all

    important facets of business area under investigation. (For this reason, the

    process of acquiring this is often termed the detailed investigation) Analyst,

    working closely with the employees and managers, must study the business

    process to answer these key questions:

    What is being done?

    How is it being done?

    How frequent does it occur?

    How great is the volume of transaction or decisions?

    How well is the task being performed?

    Does a problem exist?

    If a problem exists, how serious is it?

    If a problem exists, what is the underlying cause?

    6.1.1 Feasibility Study

    Feasibility study tells that the steps we are going to take develop the system,

    will be feasible with the following conditions:-

    A) Technical Feasibility: We are going develop this system which

    required to run the well loaded software and Technical equipments,which costly as well as needs good technical maintenance. This

    feasibility can be manned much effectively as in Indian Air Force we

    have Radar and Radio and Electronics trained persons. With little

    training they can look after the maintenance of the systems. The literacy

    of computer planning by the higher formations has also given boost up to

    this feasibility.

    B) Economical Feasibility: The followings are elaborating this

    feasibility:

    All establishments are functioning with the EDP Cell, so to run this

    system we do not need the separate Computer to install and run the

    system.

    In manual System the huge manpower is involved but with in

    implementation of this system the manpower will be nearly half.

    In the manual registers, folders, cabinets, cards lot of money was

    involved but now the money will be saved.

    Finally, it is considered that it is economically very much feasible.

    C) Operational Feasibility: To operate this system no prior permission

    required from any Government Organization, since it is itself a central

    Government Office. Since, this system does not involve any civil

    department or no other civil public is affected. No environment affect

    will take place.

    6.2 SYSTEM DESIGN

    System design provides the understandings and procedural details

    necessary for implementing the system recommended in the system study.Emphasis is on the translating the performance requirements into design

    specifications. The design phase is a transition from a user-oriented

    document (System proposal) to a document oriented to the programmers or

    database personnel.

    System design goes through two phases of development:

    1. Logical Design

    2. Physical Design

    A data flow diagram shows the logical flow of the system. For a

    system it describes the input (source), output (destination), database (data

    stores) and procedures (data flows) all in a format that meets the users

    requirement. When analysis prepares the logical system design, they specify

    the user needs at a level of detail that virtually determines the information

    flow into an out of the system and the required data resources. The logical

    design also specifies input forms and screen layouts.

    The activities following logical design are the procedure followed in

    the physical design e.g., producing programs, software, file and a working

    system. Design specifications instruct the user about what the system should

    do.

    6.3 DATA FLOW DIAGRAM

    Data Flow Diagramming is a means of representing a system at any

    level of detail with a graphic network of symbols showing data flows, data

    stores, data processes, and data sources/destination.

    The data flow diagram is analogous to a road map. It is a network

    model of all possibilities with different detail shown on different hierarchical

    levels. This processes of representing different details level is called

    leveling or partitioning by some data flow diagram advocates. Like a

    road map, there is no starting point or stop point, no time or timing, or steps

    to get somewhere. We just know that the data path must exist because at

    some point it will be needed. A road map shows all existing or planned roads

    because the road is needed.

    Details that is not shown on the different levels of the data flow

    diagram such as volumes, timing, frequency, etc. is shown on supplementary

    diagrams or in the data dictionary. For example, data store contents may be

    shown in the data dictionary.

    Data Flow Diagram (DFD) uses a number of symbols to represent the

    systems. Data Flow Diagram also known as Bubble Chart is used to clarify

    system requirements and identifying the major transformations that will

    become programs in system design. So it is the starting point of the design

    phase that functionally decomposes the requirements specifications down to

    the level of details.

    6.3.1 Terms used in DFD

    Process

    A process transforms data values. The lowest level processes are

    pure functions without side effects. An entire data flow graphics highlevel process.

    Data flows

    A data flow connects the output of an object or process to input of

    another object or process. It represents the intermediate data value

    within a computation. It is represented by an arrow and labeled with a

    description of data, usually its name or type.

    Actors

    An actor is active object that drives the data flow graph by

    producing or consuming values.

    Data store

    A data store is a passive object with in a data flow diagram that

    stores data for later access

    9. TESTING

    Testing is an investigation conducted to provide stakeholders with

    information about the quality of the product or service under test. Testing

    also provides an objective, independent view of the software to allow the

    business to appreciate and understand the risks of implementation. Testing,

    depending on the testing methods employed, can be implemented at any

    time in the development process. However, most of the test effort occurs

    after the requirements have been defined and the coding process has beencompleted. Various testing techniques are:

    Unit Testing

    Integration Testing

    System Testing

    Regression Testing

    Performance Testing

    Acceptance Testing

    9.1 Web Testing

    Making a web site does not end with putting all the media and

    software together. Actually, web site work never ends. When all the design

    is done, you have to test the site first before sending it to the World Wide

    Web for the world to see. There is site management softwarethat can do this

    for you. These software can help reconnect graphics that may have been

    accidentally moved, change the name of a file and re-link it and so many

    other things. Aside from the site management software, you also have to the

    quality of your website. Your site has to be tested, fixed, retested and fully

    documented. If any there is any software running on your website (which

    you most probably will), this has to be tested.

    Some of the things that have to be checked for quality assurance are

    multiple browser compatibility, download time of graphics, Flash

    components, or streaming media, hardware requirements, memory size

    requirements, connection speed of user, and load (number of users your

    website can accommodate). There are many companies now that are

    developing software specifically for quality assurance. But this software is

    expensive.

    Some of the other test types are functional tests (makes sure features

    work), stress tests (site is tested on computers with different hardware

    specifications), regression tests (defines how site will be tested in the next

    phases), boundary analysis (tests the limitations of site such as entering

    information in forms) (Burdman, 1999). Sometimes the best way to test your

    site is by having an actual person go through your site and let him tell you

    the problems he encountered. These people are usually called testers. Some

    of these software run test that simulate testers.

    Significance of the Study

    How important is it to test your website before going live? Site testing

    is essential so that every aspect of your website is functioning, especially

    software. Site testing ensures that there are no broken links, no missing

    graphics, no misspelled words, no bugs in the software, and that download

    time is as specified. There are many software out there that do the site

    testing for you. I will tackle only a few here that were recommended by

    experts. This will give an insight on how the software works and how

    extensive the testing is.

    What is website quality?

    There are thousands of websites launched every year and nothing is worse

    than a poorly operating website. So how websites should be tested? What arethe measures of quality? Here are some of the measures of quality according

    to Miller:

    Timeliness: WebPages have to be upgraded constantly. When it was last

    upgraded? How consistent is it to todays news or information?

    Structural Quality: All the parts of the website have to be working

    well. Are all the links (inside or outside) working? Are all the images

    loading?

    Content: This does not only concern spell checking, proofreading but

    also the consistency of the contents with either all of the other pages or

    with the request of the user, especially with dynamic web pages. Does

    the content of critical pages match what is supposed to be there? Do key

    phrases exist continually in highly changeable pages? Do critical pages

    maintain quality content from version to version?

    Accuracy and Consistency: Are the pages consistent with what the user

    requested? How consistent is the webpage with yesterdays webpage?

    Response Time and Latency: This is most essential with e-commerce

    sites. The response time of the server should be fast after clicking

    SUBMIT. Does the Website server respond to a browser request within

    certain performance parameters? Are there parts of a site that are so slow

    the user discontinues working?

    Performance: This involves performance by load or usage. Is the

    webpage loading in less than eight seconds? Can your system handle

    10,000 transactions per minute?

    Quality of the website is very important for the user. A website with too

    many broken links, defective images, may cost a lot for an e-commerce

    website. Users will quickly leave for a different site if the website is too

    complex and of low quality.
