Thankfully, mill workers detected both fires early and were able to extinguish the lanterns before they caused a more severe fire incident. The device resembles a small hot air bal- loon, fuelled by a candle or solid fuel flame. When released the lanterns can fly to great heights and drift with the wind. It is sup- posed to stay airborne until the heat source burns out, but the lanterns can’t be con- trolled once released and may drift into trees, building rooftops, fields of dry grass and other combustible materials. The Fire Chief is urging residents to simply not use them.
