Atmel 8-bit Microcontroller

Description

The Atmel® DALI Master with ATxmega32E5 evaluation kit is a hardware platform to evaluate the Atmel ATxmega32E5 Microcontroller on the implementation for DALI system.

The kit offers a standard DALI Master features which follow the DALI protocol. It enables the Atmel AVR® XMEGA® user to get started using XMEGA peripherals right away and understand how to integrate the XMEGA device in their own design.

For this reference design, the hardware design files (Schematic, BOM, and PCB Gerber) and software source code can be downloaded from Atmel website. The provided hardware documentation can be used with no limitations to manufacture the reference hardware solution for the design.

2. Overview The Atmel DALI Master with ATxmega32E5 evaluation kit is intended to demonstrate the AVR ATxmega32E5 Microcontroller.

3. Sockets and Connectors

3.1 USB Interface The USB interface is dedicated for PC for DALI control. It also supplies the power to the board.

3.2 RS232 Interface (not mounted) The RS232 interface can also control the DALI Master kit. The components in RS232 part are not mounted. User can mount them if needed. The BOM of this part is shown in Table 3-2.

3.3 DALI Bus Power Supply To convenient to build up the DALI system, the DALI Master contains the power supply socket for the DALI bus power supply.

Following the DALI protocol, the DALI bus needs a 16V/500mA DC supply applied on the DALI bus. The 16V DC comes from the adapter, any polarity for the 16V DC will be ok for the DALI bus power supply.

The DALI bus signal are differential signal, the DALI bus power supply cannot share the same ground with the USB input power supply.

In this kit, the on board DALI bus power supply is designed support upto 16 DALI Slaves. If the user needs more, the 16V adapter needs be removed, and an external DALI bus power supply needs be added on the DALI bus.

3.4 DALI Bus Interface The DALI socket is the interface to connect DALI Slaves.

3.5 Port Selection The evaluation kit has two communication interfaces with PC, one is USB and another is RS232, the port selection header gives the option for the two interfaces. Pin 1, 3, 5 of J1 is dedicated for TX and pin 2, 4, 6 for Rx. Two jumpers need placed on the Rx and Tx header to select which interface are enabled.

For example, if user wants using USB port as the communication port to PC, the jumpers need be placed on the lower side of J1: pin3 and pin5 needs be shorted by jumper, pin4 and pin6 needs to be shorted by another jumper.

Note: The RS232 part is not mounted on this kit; it can be mounted by user.

3.6 Programming Header The ATxmega32E5 can be programmed and debugged by connecting an external programming/debugging tool to the PDI header shown in Table 3-4.

4. System Setup The DALI system needs DALI Master, DALI Slaves, DALI bus, DALI bus power supply, USB cable, and PC. The basic DALI system can be setup as Figure 4-1.

5. Firmware

5.1 Default Firmware in ATxmega32E5 The ATxmega32E5 on the DALI Master evaluation kit is pre-programmed a default firmware which acts as a standard DALI Master following the DALI protocol. The code can be updated or re-programmed via PDI interface, the PDI header is described in Table 3-4.

5.2 Firmware in ATSAM4LC2A ATSAM4LC2A acts as a USB to UART Bridge; it transfers the commands between the PC and ATxmega32E5 via USB cable. The firmware can be found in the enclosed package.

The code in ATSAM4LC2A also can be re-programmed via the JTAG, but the JTAG header is not mounted by default, if user needs update the firmware, he has to mount the socket himself.

It is recommended to use the SAM-ICE under Atmel Studio to re-program the ATSAM4LC2A.

6. Software

6.1 USB Driver Installation To use the USB to UART driver which carried on the kit, a USB driver needs be installed in the PC while the USB is connected the first time.

The process below will guide user how to install the USB driver under Windows® XP.

• Step 1 Connect the DALI Master kit to PC via USB cable, the system will found a new hardware.

• Step 2 Then, the system will attempt to install the USB CDC driver, please select the “Install from a list or specific location” item, and “Next”.

• Step 3 Browse the location to folder “…\source\SAM4LC2A Firmware\DALI_MASTER_USB_CDC” and “Next”.

• Step 4 A warning may appear, press “Continue Anyway”.

• Step 5 The driver will start to install. Just wait…

• Step 7 Then, the kit will be ready to use.

6.2 PC Software Installation The PC needs install software before control the DALI system.

To run the PC software, make sure the PC is “Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.0” installed. Considering the Atmel Studio 6.0 will require the Framework 4.0 installed, if the PC has Atmel Studio 6 or above installed, the DALI Master PC software will be free to run. The software can be found in the attached folder “…\source\PCSoftware\Setup\Release”.

6.3 PC Software Configuration Once the DALI Master software is installed, a new program will be found in the installation folder.

Click “OK” to configure the COM port.

It is quite important to select a correct COM port for the DALI Tools. If user does not know which COM port is the right one, he can open the Device Manager to check the Port (COM and LPT) item.

An ASF example COM port will be appeared in the Port list, as shown in the Figure 6-16, the port in the red circle is just the one which DALI Master needs connect with.

Then select the COM20 channel in the window shown below. Leave other items in Figure 6-17 as default.

6.4 PC Software Guide From the “Commands” label, user can select the command type as Broadcast, Muticast (Group Number) or Unicast (Address).

The label “Auto Control” is used for the command list; user can edit the command list to run the DALI commands in batch.

While the DALI system build up, the DALI Master may need addresses the DALI Slaves, the “Addressing” tab gives this function. Press the “Start” while the DALI system are well connected, then the DALI Master will start to address the DALI Slaves. Then, the available DALI Slaves will be listed in the left side.

Then, the user can control the addressed DALI Slave via Short address.
