WELCOMETO THE ATLANTIC SESSIONS ON THE NORTH COAST 2013

Atlantic Sessions on The North Coast has been gathering a reputation both among performers and music lovers and this year is set to be the best yet! It is a high quality musical feast, which celebrates the vast original talent native to our corner of the world, from electric to acoustic, traditional to contemporary.

Atlantic Sessions has emerged as a permanent feature on the cultural calendar, creating an energetic, vibrant atmosphere in the pubs, hotels and bistros in Portrush and Portstewart, with satellite venues at Portballintrae and The Listening Post (Coleraine). Last year we introduced ‘Café Acoustics’ to some of our local coffee shops and are continuing to build on this element of the Festival.

The FREE Music Trail will feature over 50 live original music gigs at various venues, while ticketed Showcase Events will take place at Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart. The event is set to showcase lots of great well established and up and coming talent from across the country, including some Atlantic Sessions favourites!

Join the award-winning radio broadcaster for a special illustrated talk - with audio tracks and video clips - on three legendary mavericks from Nashville’s 60s and 70s – Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Kinky Friedman. The last time Ralph presented Raised Voices it was a big hit, and we’re delighted he’s coming back to focus on three of Country Music’s most revered outsiders.

From ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ to the electoral race for the Governor of Texas, via the ‘Red Headed Stranger’, Ralph offers a selection of audio tracks, video clips and insights – and asks you to come along with some comments and discussion points of your own.

Join us for an informal session, hosted by Ralph McLean, with great live performances and chat from some of our favourite Atlantic Sessions artists.

The format will be a series of relaxed ‘In the Round’ performances.

AMANDA ST JOHN A vibrant singer / songwriter from Glenariffe, Amanda’s songs are soul, blues and folk influenced and are communicated through powerful, emotive vocals. She has appeared on various radio and television programmes and described by Ralph McLean (BBC Radio Ulster) as “a wonderfully talented songwriter”, Amanda and her band are becoming known for their lively sets which are filled with funky grooves and a high standard of musicality.

AMIDSHIPS Amidships are purveyors of heartfelt atmospheric folk rock, but not in a vein you might expect. They are widely lauded for their captivating live performances and have toured with the likes of Elbow and Frightened Rabbit. BBC Introducing describe them as ‘something special’. If you can imagine Grandaddy and the Pixies having kids via an Arcade Fire surrogate mother, then you’re close to realising what their live show sounds like. Catch them live while you still can!

Having recently released his debut video for the breathtaking “Wrap Your Arms Around Me” (from the film ‘Safe Haven’), this uniquely gifted singer-songwriter is currently working on his debut LP and continues to perform solo shows in Northern Ireland, New York and Nashville.

Dunlop’s poetic vulnerability and the distinct, soulful power of his vocals have led to his songs being featured in numerous television shows and commercials, such as House, Cougar Town, One Tree Hill, Do No Harm and more. His song “How Far This Road Goes” is currently airing in the Discover Northern Ireland commercials.

CIARAN LAVERY Hailing from the small Northern Irish village of Aghagallon, the former ‘Captain Kennedy’ front man has come into his own as a solo artist. Alt-folk troubadour Ciaran Lavery has found a way to channel the quiet despair of isolation into timeless songs of beauty and heartache on his celebrated full-length debut album ‘Not Nearly Dark’. CRAIG McCONKEY After a year spent in London writing and re-learning his craft, Craig McConkey returned to his native Belfast with the release of his hit debut EP “These HIlls They Breathe”. Combining an upbeat, finger-picking guitar style and a charming way with words, he is winning over many admirers in NI and abroad.

FARMER AND THE GUNThe electric folk / blues / country tour-de-force that are Farmer & The Gun have been Atlantic Sessions stalwarts since 2010. Consisting of well known folkster Andrew Farmer on stirring Americana-infused vocals and acoustic, and Nathan McIntyre on electric, lap-steel, mandolin, banjo (and whatever else he can get his hands on), the boys stomping sessions never disappoint!

FARRIERSKnown for emotive and passionate live gigs, Farriers have garnered widespread critical acclaim for the quality and honesty of their music. The band have stripped back their performance for these intimate three-piece shows, and are including newly penned songs that will undoubtedly conjure the imagery of misspent youthful journeys, long forgotten company and heady nights of whiskey fuelled certainty.

IAN O’DOHERTY Since the critically acclaimed release of his debut EP ‘Never In Colour’ in May of this year, Kerry ambient folk rocker Ian O’Doherty has been a consistent feature on the Irish music scene. O’Doherty has been playlisted on RTE Radio One, appeared as a featured artist on the Miriam O’Callaghan morning show and opened sell out shows for Paddy Casey, Gemma Hayes and most recently for Walking On Cars.

JOHN DEERY AND THE HEADS John Deery is a singer-songwriter from Derry-Londonderry, who began singing and writing songs at a young age. After a number of years as a solo artist, John formed ‘John Deery and The Heads’ in 2010. Their eagerly awaited second album ‘Horizon’ was released in 2013, to coincide with the City of Culture celebrations. With laid-back melodies, heartfelt lyrics and a captivating live set, John Deery and The Heads are one of Northern Ireland’s must see bands.

JUNIOR JOHNSON This Irish troubadour brews his own blend of moonshine combining Americana, Folk and Blues. Junior draws his influences from the greats (with hints of George Thorogood and Willie Nelson) and has played all over Ireland and America. In 2012 Junior supported Henry McCullough, Paddy Nash and SOAK. He has also shared the bill with Luminaries, Cashier No.9 and opened for Andy Irvine, when he brought Sweeney’s Men together for only the third time in 40 years.

JOSHUA BURNSIDENorthern Irish experimental folk songwriter and producer, Joshua Burnside is something of a regional anomaly. With a brooding, powerful sound echoing artists of places afar and time long gone, his enthralling craft defies local comparison in striving towards an aesthetic, as much visual as it is sonic. ‘Hands down one of the most-forward thinking folk artists from these shores’ (The Thin Air).

JUSTIN BLACK Originally hailing from Arkansas, singer-songwriter, Justin Black, has made his home here - and we’re very glad of it! With the recent release of new album ‘Faith over Hope’, Justin has been able to showcase his own material to live audiences in his amazing-to-watch eclectic style. With a voice steeped in soul, audiences delight at his ability to skillfully manoeuvre from folk to pop, to modern R&B, with some beat boxing thrown in for good measure.

KAT HEPWORTH New to the NI music scene, Kat Hepworth is a special talent that is well worth a look. Her gentle acoustic ways are a calming balm to any tired soul and a reminder of the dearest things in life, to dream, to travel, to love and to let go. Kat is soon to release her first ever EP, with songs that inspire the heart to adventure and chase the fabric of life.

MARK BLAIR Mark Blair, songwriter with former local sensations ‘The Red Velvetines’, returns with his eclectic mix of Rock n’ Roll and blues. Mark has branched out on his own to share his songs about beauty, anger and redemption. He has adapted his bluesy sound to be contemporary, whilst keeping his roots firmly with the past masters. Mark is influenced by visionaries like The Rolling Stones and more recently Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

NIALL THOMAS Niall Thomas released his debut album “Breathe Easy” in April of this year to critical acclaim. Hot Press have compared Niall`s songwriting to that of Bob Dylan, The Band, Crosby Stills and Nash, while likening his voice to Tim Buckey and Jeff Tweedy. Having received extensive national airplay for his debut single ‘Spillin Diamonds’, Niall will be releasing his next single, the title-track from the album “Breathe Easy”, in November 2013.

PADDY NASH AND THE HAPPY ENCHILADAS Since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album ‘When we were Brave’ in 2010, Creggan man Paddy Nash and his Happy Enchiladas have been performing their unique blend of Folk-Pop-Punk-Country-Blues, which has left audiences revelling in the rich lyrics and big melodies. This year the Band kicked off the City of Culture celebrations in style and they intend to maintain their Cult status as the band who’ll get you thinking and dancing all at the same time.

SARA SWENSON Now finding herself mostly in Northern Ireland, American singer-songwriter, Sara Swenson, brings with her the ethereal folk-pop sensibilities that have been winning over audiences in the US for several years. Comfortable comparisons can be made to artists such as Feist, The Be Good Tanyas, Beth Orton and Sarah McLachlan, yet she brings a uniquely Midwestern softness and heartfelt authenticity that draws in listeners and keeps them there with her.

PAT MCMANUS Master virtuoso of the six strings, former ‘Mama’s Boys’ and ‘Celtus’ guitarist/violinist Pat McManus, heads this powerful three piece Blues/Rock Trio. With furiously energetic bass and phenomenal drums backing up Pat’s incredible guitar skills, the band continues to entertain everywhere they go, playing their brand of Blues/Rock with a hint of the Celtic, and always with the philosophy of giving and having a real good time.

SILENCES ‘Silences’ began as the music project of 22 year old Singer/Songwriter Conchur White from Co. Armagh. His debut EP ‘Murder Your Darlings’ has received excellent reviews - “This is an ultimately beautiful thing. It whisks you away to a place where whiskey and melancholy battle with love and hope, over a warm and welcoming soundtrack, great vocals and lyricsm...I was quite touched when I heard this and we reckon he’s one to watch”. STEF CAMPBELL With a full backing band, Stef has just released her debut double EP ‘Bad Girl Boots/Take Me Home’ and Atlantic Sessions is thrilled to include her EP Launch gig as part of this year’s line up. Described as a “guitar-wielding storyteller”, with “...resonances of Joni Mitchell...” (Rowan Hand), Stef has been playing “...a repertoire of thoughtful acoustic indie folk tunes...” (www.folkandtumble.com) across Ireland, to wide and well-deserved acclaim.

TAU TREE SERPENTSA brand new and exciting band which formed in July 2013, consisting of three established artists from very different backgrounds. Described as having an upbeat, feel good sound and gorgeous harmonies, The Tau Tree Serpents use elements of jazz, blues, country, folk, rockabilly, acoustic grunge, country and pop, which provides them with their memorable style. They are releasing their debut EP in December and are currently planning a European tour at Easter. A must see over the Festival.

THE FULL MOON ORCHESTRA A Riverside Theatre coup and a first appearance for one of Europe’s most talented musical ensembles, which will be performing numbers from its latest cd. The Full Moon Orchestra already has a tremendous following in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The musicians are Frankie Rose Duffy (10-string mandolin and vocals), Jean Didier Van Der Vorst (guitars and backing vocals) and Martine Medol (flute, guitars and vocals). THE WHITE MANSIONS An explosive five piece honky tonkin’ band from Belfast, who are making their debut appearance at the Atlantic Sessions this year. BLOWN TOWN BLUES BANDBased in and around the North Coast, this Band are no strangers to the local music scene, each having played in various bands over many years. Looking for an outlet for the blues is what brought them together and they are currently working hard on original material. So get your dancing shoes on and catch the band live.

DRY HUMOUR A 2 piece act based in Portstewart. Lauramay Reid is a singer-songwriter with a lot of soul and bluesy tones.

Marty Reid plays wonderfully on his acoustic guitar, while simultaneously playing up to three drum pedals, making this act great to watch as well as listen to.

FINNEGAN’S WAKE Mark Johnston is a multi-instrumentalist from Belfast, better known for playing in the Belfast based ‘Blackthorn’ Folk Band. Manny Loughran, county champion accordian player from Carnlough, started his musical career in the Glens based band ‘Bogcotton’. Both now live in the tranquil location of Cushendun and make up the dynamic line-up that is Finnegan’s Wake.

Regular bus services run to Portrush, Portstewart and Coleraine from most areas.

Translink operate a regular bus service (approximately every half hour) between Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart until around 10pm daily. There is also a limited service to venues at Portballintrae and the University of Ulster.
