Story by WILLIAM SOKOLIC, Courier-Post Staff

Robert Reid knew Monopoly. And he knew Atlantic City. But he never madethe connection between game and city until last year.

As the U.S. Travel Editor for Lonely Planet, Reid saw a story in his enlightenment. With video camera in tow, he visited Atlantic City last month.

“I am always searching for alternative source guidebooks,” Reid said. He createdone before by examining the lyrics in Billy Joel songs.

Monopoly is like that, he said. Indeed, for a look at the pre-casino Atlantic City, the Monopoly board is the best way to go back, Reid said.

“This trip resonated with people. It’s a lot of fun and it counts as work for me. Thereaction to seeing all these places, it was exciting. And the game itself is timeless andesthetically appealing.”

That Parker Brothers is celebrating 75 years of Monopoly is icing on the cake.Reid visited every property on the board. One of the truisms he came away with dur-ing his visit was the relative value of the properties compared to the real streets evenmany years after Charles Darrow invented the game. Boardwalk and Park Place stillrepresent the high point in value, despite the economic downturn. Baltic and Medi-terranean avenues still have comparatively less real estate value. But Reid didn’t dwellon the low rent district in his analysis.Marvin Gardens was one of his favoritestops. “It’s the only property outsideAtlantic City. It’s a great housing commu-nity. They’re like the little houses you puton the board. There’s something charm-ing about the story of Marvin Gardens.”

The community straddles Margateand Ventnor, and is named for the firstthree letters of each city. So MarvinGardens is misspelled in the game, a factParker Brothers acknowledged someyears ago, but elected not to correct. There were disappointments, Reid said.“It’s unfortunate you can’t see the originaltrain station,” he said.Atlantic Avenue was another highlight with its eclectic Princeton Antiques book shopand the pre-casino Baltimore Grill. Atlantic Avenue also houses Dock’s Oyster House,a restaurant dating back to 1897.

Reid stayed at the Irish Pub Inn above the restaurant on St. James Place daysbefore it closed for the season.

“It’s one of the most memorable hotels in the U.S.,” he said. The sea breeze blows in. The décor and furnishings come from local estate sales.

The floors are slanted. It’s a little clunky.“But you get a sense of a different time. It’s a way to experience a different era in At-lantic City. When you go to the places locals talk about, they talk about that inn. I havea soft spot for St. James Place now,” Reid said.

The history of Atlantic City through the eyes of local residents was overwhelming.“It whet my appetite for more, in a way that really surprised me. On one level this touris a gimmick. But the payoff is real. It leads to conversations. Monopoly cuts acrossgenerations. It’s fun, nostalgic. It’s an extra bonus for that area.”Reid thinks the city should do more to highlight the Monopoly connection. A handfulof signs are on the boardwalk, but don’t always speak to actual streets in the game. And he lamented the lack of signs along Martin Luther King Boulevard acknowledg-ing its past as Illinois Avenue.

“I do not expect to be a master after one visit,” Reid said. “It makes me want toknow more. It’s a starting point. Next year, I might come back and see if I can flesh itout. I am not done with this city.”To see the video created by Robert Reid, visitlonelyplanet.com/usa/new-jersey/atlantic-city.

Penn & Teller’s silent magician talks the talk

Harrah’s celebrates 30 years in Atlantic City

Teller talks. For more than 35 years, the diminutive magician-

comic has never uttered a word on stage. While hissilence will speak volumes when he performs withPenn Gillette at Harrah’s this weekend, away from thespotlight, Teller has plenty to say with his voice.Teller’s attraction to silence took root as a teen.

“All I ever heard was dumb stuff when magicianstalked. Like `Here’s a red ball.’ So? Or `Last year Itravelled through India’ and I knew they were nevereast of Cherry Hill,” said Teller.

Teller spent a lot of time watchingpeople to learn how to strip awaytalking.“It’s a cool way to communicate withthe audience,” said Teller, whosesilent, occasionally creepy, magicmixes well with Penn’s clown collegeeducation and juggling expertise.

A classics major in college, Tellertaught school for six years so hisnature is in being verbal and specific,he said. “Take that away and it forcesme to have clarity,” said Teller, whoco-wrote and directed “Play Dead,”which officially opens off-Broadwayin New York next week.

Do not confuse Teller’s approachwith that of a mime, he cautions.“Part of my style is a rebellion againstmime. Mime is made out of fragilesugar.”In Atlantic City, audiences can expecta mix of classic and new pieces blended together.Penn & Teller do one sleight of hand with a miniaturetoy cow. An audience member covers the bit on video.“The audience has a different perspective from theguy on stage so there are interesting turns and twists,”Teller said.

Penn & Teller always do a meet and greet after everyshow, and at Harrah’s it will be no exception. “It’s partof the pleasure we take in doing the show. It’s likepartying with friends after the show,” said Teller.

The duo has often performed in Atlantic City. Infact, in 1989, they filmed “Penn & Teller Get Killed,”a comedy mystery set against the backdrop of anAtlantic City in transition.

“We wanted to set the movie in a place where weactually performed. We were pretending it was a story

set in our real lives as performers. Westarted to play in Atlantic City fromtime to time and we were intriguedwith the contrast between the casinostrip and the older city attached toit,” Teller said.Teller liked the exploration of imageson the Boardwalk late at night, including a chase scene on thewooden way in rolling chairs. These days Penn & Teller can beseen in their long-running showon Showtime. “Penn & Teller:Bull****!” tackles the frauds and fakesbehind such topics as talking to thedead, alien abductions, feng shui, vaccination opposition and bottledwater. And they do it with colorful languageand nudity, neither a factor in theirstage act.“We bring in a little rough languageand sex to the table,” said Teller, who began his show business career

as one third of the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society, which featured Penn and a funny music scholar namedWeir Chrisemer. The act lasted six years and out of itcame the partnership of Penn & Teller. The new act floundered for a few years. “We’re big on

flops. The art of surviving is to expect flops and bedelighted when they’re not,” Teller said.

After playing small clubs, theaters and theRenaissance Fair circuit, Penn & Teller’s off-beat brandof magic and comedy gained national attention whentheir stage show opened off-Broadway in 1985, leadingto appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman,”“Saturday Night Live” and “Miami Vice.” In 1987,their stage show moved to Broadway, the first of twosuccessful runs.

Penn & Teller have written best-selling books -“Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends,” “How to Play with YourFood,” and “How to Play in Traffic.”

A decade ago, the pair settled into a steady, longterm gig at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in LasVegas. “It’s such a luxury to have your own theater withyour own name. And we get to sleep in our own bedsand not go through airport security,” Teller said.

Being in the same location night after night requiresalways generating new material, he said. “It’s our job tocome up with something new and different.”When it comes to new material, the final look oftencomes out of disagreement between the two men, Tellersaid. “I say `That’s stupid.’ Penn says `That won’t work ifwe do it this way.’ Ours is a colorful way of working.”

Despite the comfort zone at the Rio, Penn & Tellerstill hit the road. Would Teller like to add a summerextended stay in Atlantic City to complement Las Vegas?“I’m ready,” he said.

IF YOU GOPenn & Teller perform at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday inThe Concert Venue at Harrah’s, 777 Harrah’s Boulevard.Tickets are $45 to $75 and can be purchased throughTicketmaster at (800) 745-3000, online at ticketmaster.com or at the Harrah’s Box Office, (609) 441-5786.For more information, visit pennandteller.com andwww.playdeadnyc.com.

On Nov. 23, 1980, Harrah’s became the first casino toopen off the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, building on landin the marina district of the resort.

The ownership of the parent company changedhands several times since, but Harrah’s has remainsone of the more stable casinos in the city. Now, threedecades later and with a number of hotel towers added,Harrah’s remains one of the industry leaders, even in asluggish casino economy. Its success has even attractedmarina companions - Borgata and Trump Marina.

“Through thoughtful leadership, prudent investmentand a never-ending quest to understand both themarket and the potential market, Harrah’s hasconsistently remained a top performer in Atlantic City,”said analyst Joseph Weinert, of the Linwood-basedSpectrum Gaming Group. “It has been unafraid tomake bold investments and face the many competitivechallenges, both within the city and in the Mid-Atlanticregion. Along the way, it has earned a well-deservedreputation as a good corporate and community citizen.”

Harrah’s newest hotel tower, The Waterfront, openedin 2008 and brought the room total to more than 2,500.The property also has some 160,000 square feet ofcasino. The project also included the Waterfront Buffetand the successful attraction, The Pool.

“The team works hard to have a well-run operationto get through the challenging times,” said Stanford Le,vice president of marketing for Harrah’s Resort.

The typical customer has not changed much, Lesaid. Just gotten older. Maybe those who came in the1980s are the same who come today, That is why thisanniversary is important for people who have grown

up with the company, hesaid.

“Our core customeris still a slot customer,” Le said. “We still have a largenumber of slots. Table games have grown, but we havenot shifted into a table games model.”

Since October, Harrah’s has held a number of eventsfor top players, from an intimate dinner with EasternDivision president, Don Marrandino, to an upcomingevent with Harrah’s corporate CEO, Gary Loveman.

The celebrations extend to employees as well.Harrah’s has about 120 of its day-one employees stillon the payroll. “They’ve seen the property grow up,” Lesaid.

A few public events are geared toward the 30thanniversary including the $300,000 30th AnniversarySweepstakes. Players can receive one entry for every30 base reward credits earned playing slots and tablegames through Nov. 28.

Activate entries between 6 a.m. on Nov. 24 and 8 p.m.on Nov. 28. The drawing will be on between Noon and10 p.m. that day. Winners have 15 minutes to claim theirprize, or prize will be forfeited.

The casino has also had anniversary giveaways ofsweatshirts and other gifts. The retailers sell specialtyitems for the anniversary, too and Harrah’s restaurantscontinue to have different specials.

Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. is the world’s largestprovider of branded casino entertainment throughoperating subsidiaries.

Since its beginning in Reno, Nevada 70 years ago,Harrah’s has grown through development of newproperties, expansions and acquisitions, and now ownsor manages casino resorts on four continents.

Harrah’s entry into Atlantic City came by way ofHoliday Inns, Inc. Michael Rose, who ran Holiday Inns, announced plans to build two casino-hotels in AtlanticCity, including one on the Boardwalk. As a subsidiary ofHoliday Inns, Harrah’s became the operator of a casinoopened in 1980 on marshland a mile and a half north ofAtlantic City’s boardwalk and named Harrah’s MarinaHotel Casino which had 506 guest rooms.

From a property standpoint, Harrah’s is one of only ahandful of properties in Atlantic City that has reinvestedin their product and reaped the rewards with a propertythat remains relevant and healthy in a very challengingenvironment,’’ said analyst Cory Morowitz of MorowitzGaming Advisors.

In 1984,Harrah’s opened,in partnershipwith developerDonald J.Trump, thetallest buildingon the AtlanticCity boardwalk- the 39-storyHarrah’s TrumpPlaza hotel andcasino. The jointventure, builtby the TrumpOrganization on Trump land but with Harrah’s money, ended in acrimony when the competing Trump’s Castlemade its debut the following year, right across the streetfrom Harrah’s Marina. In 1986, Trump bought Harrah’shalf-share in Trump Plaza.

If you get into singing Joe Cocker’s version of ‘’Witha Little Help From my Friends,” complete with spasticarm movements, Karaoke Night at Trump Plaza’s LiquidBar is the place to be.

Every Wednesday from 8 p.m. to midnight, DJ Mi-

chael James, of 100.7 WZXL, plays host with a selectionof more than 100,000 songs.Cocker is one of the stalwarts requested by regulars,James said, along with a bunch as disparate as EttaJames, Johnny Cash and The Beatles.

“We get requests for just about every kind of musicon Wednesday nights. From Sinatra to Sublime. B-52’sto ‘’Grease’’ music. Doo wop, Motown, disco, classicrock. There is no number one favorite. It varies week toweek,” said James, who plays dance and rock requestsbetween singers so as not to alienate those who do notwant to sing.

Located just inside the Boardwalk entrance, LiquidBar serves $3 draft beers, $4 glasses of wine and $5cocktails during Karaoke night.

For James, Karaoke Night also offers a change of pace. “Ireally enjoy getting out of the radio studio each Wednes-day night to entertain guests. Karaoke at Trump Plaza’sLiquid Bar is like having a bunch of friends come overand joining the party.”

Trump Plaza adds small contests from time to time.“Karaoke at Trump Plaza’s Liquid Bar is a perfect op-portunity to break up the work week and have some funwith friends,” said Tony Sanza, Trump Plaza’s director offood and beverage. “There’s no cover charge, no cost tosing and everyone can enjoy a great night out.”

Let’s get this out in the open. Rick Springfield is not a one trick pony. He’s not de-

fined by his monster smash, “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield has recorded 16 other top 40 hits

in his career and sold 20 million records.

He’s also an author. A songwriter. A cruise host. An actor. A soap star. And he still

kicks it as leader of a live rock band. The band rolls into Borgata’s Music Box Nov. 5.

Springfield promises a muscular band and audience interaction. “We do the hits

and new stuff and we hope to run off stage hot and sweaty at the end,” he said in a

phone interview.

The more recent hits include “What’s Victoria’s Secret” and “Venus in Overdrive,”

the latter the title of Springfield’s last studio rock album. You’re also likely to hear Spring-

field’s version of “Jet,” the hit by Paul McCartney and Wings he recorded live.

“Half the purpose of my show is to play new music. And those songs get a great reaction.

They sound great live. It’s hard to just sit there when I play them,” he said.

The show has no down moments, Springfield promised.

Last year, the Australian born singer released “My Precious Little One,” a collection

of lullabies he created for his own sons when they were children.

Springfield is excited for his third annual Rick Springfield and Friends Cruise on

Carnival Lines Nov. 15 to 20. The cruise will visit Nassau, Half Moon Cay and Grand

Turk.

“It’s an incredible time,” he said. “We do stuff we wouldn’t do on tour. We have

movie night where we make fun of various films.”

He and his friends, Kevin Cronin, of REO Speedwagon, will get up close and per-

sonal with Q and A’s about their careers and songwriting. Former MTV VJ, Mark Good-

man, hosts.

Springfield rose to prominence in the U.S. in 1981 with the release of the catchy,

“Jessie’s Girl.” Like so many young people who grew up in Britain and Australia, The

Beatles and the other British invasion bands shaped his musical future.

But acting was as much a part of his career as singing. He originated the character

of Dr. Noah Drake on the soap “General Hospital” which he played in the early 1980s

and again from late 2005 to 2008.

Don’t look for Noah Drake to return to General Hospital.

“It’s the hardest gig in the acting world. You have to memorize a lot and do it real

fast,” he said.

But he hopes to do more episodes of “Californication,” a Showtime series which

stars David Duchovny. Last year he appeared in four episodes of the series.

In addition, his autobiography, “Late, Late at Night,” reached the New York Times best

seller list. According to his web site, the book “resonates with a witty, wry, self-depre-

cating, brutally honest voice.” He talks about not only his rise in the entertainment

world, his passion for music and his family, but his longtime battle with depression and

thoughts of suicide, the death of his father, and his decision to drop out at the peak of

fame.

He’s also writing scripts for television and his publisher wants more material.

Of all his professional endeavors, writing music is his favorite. “Playing live is my next

favorite thing,” he said.

IF YOU GO:

Rick Springfield plays Borgata’s Music Box Friday. Show time is 9 p.m. Tickets are $50
