D. Orlando Ledbetter, AJC: Dunn signed a one-year contract extension --- through the 2008 season --- and turned future earnings into a $2.5 million signing bonus. Per league rules, the salary-cap charge for signing bonuses is prorated over the term of the deal. Dunn, coming off a career-best season in carries (280) and yards (1,416), trimmed almost $3 million off his 2006 cap charge by reworking his contract for a second consecutive season. He will earn $2.7 million this season and is scheduled to make $12.45 million over the next three years. Dunn expressed apprehension late last season about his $8.5 million salary-cap charge for 2006, making him a potential salary-cap casualty. However, president and general manager Rich McKay said the team would do what it had to in order to retain its leading rusher and most recognized humanitarian, hinting at the contract adjustment.

Richard Justice, Washington Post: he'd signed a three-year, $2.9 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons. The Redskins wanted him back, but were unwilling to match Atlanta's offer of a $500,000 signing bonus and annual salaries of $500,000, $1 million and $900,000.

Len Pasquarelli, Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Geathers, 34, signed a two-year contract. It is believed the deal is worth substantially less than the contract extension Atlanta had previously offered Geathers. In April, the Falcons proposed adding one year (1996) to Geathers' existing contract and raising his compensation for '95 from $1.2 million to about $1.45 million. The deal he signed on Tuesday includes a signing bonus, and Geathers can reportedly earn about $750,000 - but only by reaching predetermined performance standards.

Dan Pompei, Chicago Sun-Times: Jeff George made hundreds of thousands of dollars last week even though he isn't even on a team. He did it by winning a grievance hearing against the Falcons, who had been trying to withhold four paychecks from George for conduct detrimental to the team. An arbitrator ruled George should collect all but three-fourths of one paycheck, roughly $160,000. So the Falcons now have to pay their former quarterback $695,529 that they had been withholding.

Pat Yasinskas, ESPN: Gonzalez was scheduled to receive a $31,250 bonus for every game he’s been active this season.

Pat Yasinskas, ESPN: Gonzalez will make almost $7 million in 2012, but will only count $5.9 million toward the team’s salary cap… Gonzalez’s base salary for 2012 will be $3.9 million, but he also already earned that $2 million renegotiation bonus. The deal also includes a $1 million bonus if Gonzalez is on the roster on opening day.

Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Gonzalez's extension is actually worth $6.9 million and did not contain a signing bonus. Instead, Gonzalez received a $2 million advance from his 2012 salary, which is prorated evenly over the 2011 and 2012 league years, as is the $31,250 per game roster bonus Gonzalez received for Week 17. Gonzalez will earn a $3.9 million base salary and a $1 million roster bonus in 2012 and has a cap number of $5.916 million in 2012.

D. Orlando Ledbetter, AJC: Gonzalez, who signed a two-year, $14 million contract, will count for $5.25 million on the 2013 salary cap. He’s set to receive a base salary of $3.5 million and he has a bonus of $3.5 million. In 2014, his base salary is $4.0 million with a roster bonus of $3 million if he plans to continue playing. A two-year deal was done in order to spread his bonus money out over two years.

Page 41: Atlanta Cap/Contract Notes - ianwhetstone.com · Web viewVaughn McClure, ESPN: Asamoah signed a five-year deal worth $4.5 million per season with a $4 million signing bonus and a

Pat Yasinskas, ESPN: Although Gonzalez will make $7 million this season, his salary-cap figure will be only $5.25 million. That’s because the Falcons structured the deal with what is known as “OATSB’’ (other amount treated as signing bonus). Gonzalez will receive $3.5 million in base salary and another $3.5 million that will treated as OATSB.

Matt Winkeljohn, Atlanta Journal Constitution: one of the first things new coach Dan Reeves and general manager Harold Richardson did was give Hall a contract that included a $ 1 million signing bonus in April that year… He put up big numbers in '97, registering 109 tackles and 10 1/2 sacks while earning a modest $ 200,000 in base salary… His salary jumped to $ 750,000 last season, and $ 1.15 million this season.

Matt Winkeljohn, Atlanta Journal Constitution: Hall's four-year extension gives him a seven-year deal worth $ 52.5 million, more than any contract in team history. But as with all big NFL contracts, the numbers need interpretation. Including Hall's $ 5.1 million signing bonus, it's likely to end up a four- year, $ 16.5 million, or three-year, $ 10.5 million deal… Hall's cap charges in 2002, '03, '04, and '05 are scheduled at $ 6.7 million, $ 10.7 million, $ 12.7 million and $ 14.7 million.

Matt Winkeljohn, Atlanta Journal Constitution: Hall's cap charge of about $6.73 million can be lowered by $1.5 million to $3 million if he'll restructure his $4.8 million salary. Cutting him would save at least $3 million.

Matt Winkeljohn, Atlanta Journal Constitution: Hall has restructured the final four years of his contract, dramatically reducing salaries of $4.8 million, $7.8 million, $8.8 million and $9.8 million.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Hall went from a base salary of $3.1 million for 2004 to total compensation of $1.75 million. He got a signing bonus of $500,000, a roster bonus of $500,000 (cut from $1 million), and a base salary of $750,000. Those moves dropped his cap charge from $6.37 million to $3.67 million. Hall also addressed the 2005 portion of his contract, dropping his cap from $11.5 million to $6.4 million. His base salary went from $7.4 million to $3 million, and a roster bonus of $2 million was chopped in half.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: reports that the first two years of Bobby Hebert's three-year, $ 10.4 million contract are guaranteed have proven erroneous. There is language in the contract that allows the Falcons to walk away from the final two seasons of the deal next March 1. If they opt not to do that, the second year is guaranteed. Hebert's base salaries, according to the NFL Players Association, are $ 2.7 million this season ($ 1 million of that in a salary advance), $ 3.5 million in '94 and $ 4.2 million in '95.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: Hebert's one-year contract is believed to be worth about $ 1 million, with additional bonuses based on playing time. The original three-year contract Hebert signed last April with the Falcons called for a base salary this year of $ 3.5 million.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: The one-year, $ 750,000 deal came a day before the nine-year veteran, an unrestricted free agent, was scheduled to visit the Detroit Lions… Hebert, 34, will receive a $ 375,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $ 375,000.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: The Falcons weren't the only ones who got some security with a contract that will pay Hebert $ 800,000, half of that as a signing bonus… If the 10-year veteran becomes the starter and Atlanta makes the playoffs, the contract will total $ 3.05 million.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: he signed a one-year contract worth $ 350,000.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night signed fullback Craig Heyward to a two- year contract extension worth at least $ 2 million… The extension will pay Heyward a signing bonus of $ 700,000 and base salaries of $ 600,000 ('95) and $ 700,000 ('96). There are also weigh-in incentives that can add significantly to the contract.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: Heyward agreed to a one-year contract extension (through 1997) Tuesday and the arrangement created about $ 250,000 in salary cap room for the Falcons. Scheduled to earn $ 700,000 in base salary this year, Heyward will have $ 504,000 of that converted to a signing bonus and lower the salary to $ 196,000. Mike Florio, PFT: Jackson received a $250,000 signing bonus and a new $250,000 roster bonus for 2007. The roster bonus is due on September 7; thus, if Jackson is cut before then, he won't get it. At the same time, his base salary was reduced from $1.5 million to $1 million. So, for now, he merely received a $250,000 advance on his 2007 pay. Also, a $2 million roster bonus was added to his 2008 compensation, due on the first day of the league year. It means that either Jackson will get the money, or he'll get a shot at hitting the open market in March. For next season, his base salary was reduced from $1.5 million to $1.0 million. The Falcons also added a year to the deal, with a $2 million roster bonus due on the first day of the 2009 league year, and a $1 million base salary. So, as a practical matter, Jackson extended his commitment by a year and can make an extra $4.5 million in roster bonuses and salary. (There's also a $1.25 million escalator provision, but as we see it the higher his salary goes the greater the likelihood that he gets cut loose.)

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: Kennedy… will report to Suwanee tonight to sign the three-year, $3.018 million contract. According to information obtained through the NFL Players Association, the unique contract will pay Kennedy a signing bonus of $150,000, a reporting bonus of $665,000 and a base salary of $100,000 this season. In 1994, Kennedy will earn a base salary of $956,250, with $500,000 of that gu aranteed. In '95, the base salary rises to $1,147,500.

Len Pasquarelli, AJC: the Falcons made Kennedy, a first-round choice in 1993, a minimum contract tender of $361,000 to retain a right of first refusal on the restricted free agent. But to keep Kennedy beyond June 1, Section 2/Paragraph (i) of the CBA stipulates Atlanta would have to raise that tender to 110 percent of his '95 salary - or about $1.26 million.

Matt Winklejohn, AJC: McClure's is worth $ 775,000 with a $ 25,000 bonus…

Matt Winklejohn, AJC: For Falcons center Todd McClure, today's game could be worth at least $100,000. That's how big a bonus McClure gets if the Falcons end the season with fewer sacks allowed or more yards per carry than they had last season… He's earning a league-minimum salary of $450,000 this year, and he's slated to earn $535,000 next year. That's the NFL minimum for a sixth-year player. If he triggers the clause, he gets $100,000. Then, if he opts to return, his salary escalates to $635,000 next year. Or he could opt for free agency.

D. Orlando Ledbetter, AJC: McClure, a seven-year veteran from LSU, is signed through 2011 with base salaries of $1 million in 2007, followed by $1.3 million, $1.4 million, $1.6 million and $1.7 million. The contract, with a signing bonus and guarantees, is believed to be worth about $10 million.

Aaron Wilson, Scout.com: McClure's one-year deal is worth $990,000, includes $65,000 signing bonus and $150,000 of his $925,000 base salary guaranteed…

Pat Yaskinskas, ESPN: McClure got a $65,000 signing bonus, so his cap figure is $605,000, even though the total cash value of his one-year contract is $990,000.

D. Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta Journal Constitution: Here’s the breakdown on Dunta Robinson six-year contract, which included a $7 million signing bonus: He’s sent to receive base salaries of $5 million in 2010, $5.5 million in 2011, $6 million in 2012, $7 million in 2013, $9 million in 2014 and $9.5 million in 2015. He’s also set to receive a $3 million bonus in the second year of the deal and could also receive another $5 million in option bonuses. His salary cap numbers are $12 million in 2010, $6.5 million in 2011, $7.75 million in 2012, $8.75 million in 2013, $10.75 million in 2014 and $11.25 million in 2015.

Adam Schefter, ESPN: the Atlanta Falcons signed CB Dunta Robinson to a six-year, $57 million contract with $25.5 million in guarantees.

Mike Florio, PFT: The deal initially was reported as paying Robinson $25.5 million guaranteed. A source with access to the numbers, however, tells us that this interpretation of the contract includes as guaranteed money a $3 million non-guaranteed option bonus payable in 2012. Though the option bonus has a non-exercise fee, the Falcons could cut Robinson before the due date of the bonus and avoid the $3 million.

Pat Yasinskas, ESPN: he signed off on some tweaks to his contract that will save the Falcons $1.75 million in cap space this year. Robinson waived a $3 million option bonus that was about to come due and also agreed to lower his base salary for this year by $1 million. But Robinson gets some benefits in return. His new $5 million base salary for this year has been fully guaranteed. The Falcons also increased Robinson’s 2013 base salary to $8 million from $7 million and his 2014 salary was raised from $9 million to $10 million. His base salary for 2015 was increased from $9.5 to $11.5 million.

Pat Yasinskas, ESPN: If Robinson still is on the roster that day, $3 million of his $8 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed. Robinson currently is scheduled to count $9 million against the 2013 salary cap. But the Falcons could free up $6 million in cap space if they waive him before a portion of his base salary becomes guaranteed.

The remaining $1 million comes in the form of per game active roster bonuses ($62,500 per). 2014, the third season of the renegotiated contract, includes a $3.5 million base salary and $1.75 million in roster bonuses. $750,000 is available if Samuel is on the 53-man roster in Week 1 and had 70 percent playing time in 2013 with the other $1 million available in per game active roster bonuses ($62,500 per). Samuel can earn up to $2 million in base salary escalators in 2013 and 2014, which he'd need to hit in order to earn the reported value of $18.5 million.

Pat Yaskinskas, ESPN: Samuel is showing up with a $2.875 cap figure for Atlanta this year. Initially, his figure had shown up as $3.875 million, but the updated breakdown has Philadelphia taking a $1 million hit for pro-rated money this year. Samuel will earn $1.25 million in guaranteed base salary this season. He also has a roster bonus that will pay him $62,500 for each game he is active this season. That means he can earn an extra $1 million, but only $875,000 of that currently is counting against the cap. The other $125,000 does not count against this year’s cap, because it’s listed as a not-likely-to be-earned incentive.

Jenny Vrentas, Newark Star-Ledger: Umenyiora's contract is worth $8.5 million, with $5 million in the first year, and can reach a max value of $12.5 million, the person said.

Joel Corry, NFP: Umenyiora's 2-yr deal w/the Falcons averages $4.25M per yr. $3.75M is fully GTD ($2.5M signing bonus & $1.25M '13 base salary)… Umenyiora's '13 cap number is $3.75M & there's a '14 base salary escalator… Osi makes $5M in '13.

Pat Yasinskas, ESPN: I just got a look at the official numbers on the two-year deal that’s worth $8.5 million. Umenyiora will cost the Falcons $3.75 million against this year’s cap. Umenyiora got a $2.5 million signing bonus and his 2013 base salary will be a guaranteed $1.75 million. He also has a $750,000 roster bonus. In 2014, Umenyiora’s base salary rises to $2.5 million and he has a $1 million roster bonus. Vick received an immediate signing bonus of $7.5 million and will earn roster bonuses of $22.5 million in March of 2005 and of $7 million in March of 2006. That accounts for the $37 million in total guaranteed funds in the deal. It also means that Vick will have an unwieldy salary cap charge of nearly $26 million for 2005. So how will the Falcons deal with that? As is the case with Manning's contract in Indianapolis, the team will convert the roster bonus into a signing bonus, which will allow Atlanta to prorate it. The base salaries for the Vick deal: $600,000 (for 2005), $1.4 million (2006), $6 million (2007), $7 million (2008), $9 million (2009), $10.5 million (2010), $13.5 million (2011), $13 million (2012), $15 million (2013) and $17 million (2014). The deal, in its first six seasons, which is about the maximum length that it figures to run before being dramatically restructured, is worth about $71.5 million.

Pat Yasinkas, ESPN: Weatherspoon only received a $500,000 signing bonus. But he also has a $965,000 roster bonus for this year, and there’s no doubt he’s going to be on the roster. Weatherspoon currently is to earn $3.9 million in base salaries over the course of a contract that could run through 2014. The club holds an option for that final season, and there’s an option bonus that has to be exercised in 2011. Aaron Wilson, PFT: Adam Schefter has confirmed that the deal is done and reports that White has received a six-year, $50 million contract with $18.6 million in guaranteed money. White is due to make a little under $28 million during the first three years of the deal, according to Mike Florio.

D. Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta Journal Constitution: In addition to the $6 million signing bonus, White will receive $6 million in a guaranteed base salary this season. His base salary of $6.6 million for 2010 also is guaranteed, making $18.6 million of the contract guaranteed. In 2011, White has a base salary for $4 million and a team option bonus of $5.3 million. In 2012, his base salary is $5.5 million followed by $5.6 million and $5 million in 2013 and 2014, respectively. There are also $4 million in incentives strewn throughout the deal, like the $960,000 option bonus and a workout bonus of $7,000.

White was set to make $2.28 million before the extension was reached. He held out of camp for eight days and amassed a fine of $127,104.
