BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY

The Ateneo de Manila University traces its roots in 1859, when the Cityof Manila entrusted to the Spanish Jesuit Fathers the administrationof the Escuela Municipal de Manila, located in the walled city of

    Intramuros.

The Jesuits expanded the Escuela Municipals primary school

curriculum to include a ve-year program leading to a Bachelor of Artsdegree. In keeping with its new academic status, the school was renamedthe Ateneo Municipal de Manila. Among the rst graduates of the Bachelorof Arts program is the Philippines national hero, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal

    (A.B. 1877).

In 1901, when the City withdrew its subsidy to the school and

the Ateneo ofcially became a private institution, it changed its name toAteneo de Manila. In 1921, the American Jesuits of the Maryland-NewYork Province replaced the Spanish Jesuits as teachers and administrators

    of the Ateneo.

The Intramuros re of 1932 completely destroyed the Ateneobuildings, forcing the school to move to a new location on Padre Faura

Street, Ermita. During the battle for the liberation of Manila, the Padre Faura

complex of buildings was razed. Temporary structures were quickly built, and in 1952, the Ateneo moved to its present spacious campus in Loyola

Heights, Quezon City. In 1958, the Society of Jesus in the Philippines wasraised to the status of a full Province. The administration of the Ateneo

passed from the New York Province to the Philippine Province of theSociety of Jesus and shortly after, its rst Filipino Rector/President was

named. With the growth of the Ateneo, the school obtained its charter asa university in 1959.

The spirit of excellence embodied by the Ateneos inspiring

namesake, the Athenaeum in ancient Rome, is reected in its growthinto an active, fully accredited, and much esteemed university with verystrong undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts and sciences, andprofessional programs in management, law, governance, and medicine and

    public health.

Today, the Ateneo de Manila University comprises units of higher

education: the Loyola Schools located on Katipunan Avenue in LoyolaHeights, Quezon City, the Ateneo Professional Schools located in MakatiCity, and the Medical School at Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City. In addition ithas a high school, a middle school, and a grade school.

    A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE

of the Philippines and De La Salle University, formed the consortium

that established the Asian Institute of Management. As a consequence ofthis collaborative effort, the full-time MBA program of the Ateneo wasdiscontinued. The agreement was that AIM was to concentrate on the full-time program.

In 1977, the AGSB moved to H.V. de la Costa Street in SalcedoVillage in Makati City to bring it closer to the clientele that is sought to

serve. The Ateneo Law School and the Ateneo Information TechnologyInstitute joined the AGSB, to become collectively known as the AteneoProfessional Schools (APS).

AGSB. We constantly challenge our students to show leadership, rather

than indifference; to excel, rather than wallowing in mediocrity.

Etcall-roded. In todays world, ethics is easily business and

rationalized on the power, money, and connections. The AGSB endeavorsto integrate, in all its courses and offerings, the ethical dimensions ofmanagement and leadership. Students learn to resolve ethical dilemmasin the workplace through a moral and ethical framework.

Maaers ad leaders for oters. Our graduates are rooted inan authentic Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit education, reective of Ignatianvalues. They seek avenues of serving others in the careers they pursue, deeply aware that to whom much is given, much is expected in return.

PA RT IITHE ATENEO-REGIS MBA PROGRAM

    A. Distinctive Features

    1. Partnership between Ateneo de Manila University

    and Regis University

Ateneo de Manila University and Regis University, arecognized Center for Adult Learning in Denver, Colorado, inthe United States, entered into a Program Development andLicense Agreement in October 1997. Under the agreement, the

two Jesuit institutions, through the Ateneo Graduate School ofBusiness and Regis Universitys International Studies Programand its Graduate School of Business, committed to develop an

MBA program designed specically for adult learners.

    2. Student-Centered Learning

The program is student-centered rather than professor-dependent. Although the professor may still deliver lectures, his facilitation skills are essential to bring out the experiences

of his adult students. For this reason, individuals undergo afaculty assessment process to determine qualication to teachin the Regis program.

    B. The Ateneo-Regis MBA Program Curriculum

    1. General Description

    a. The Ateneo-Regis MBA Program is a non-thesis

program designed for senior managers and executives

whose corporate responsibilities limit their time for

pursuing graduate degrees and are thus compelled to

complete the program as quickly as possible through

accelerated methods. The program is also designed for

senior practitioners whose learning styles and outcomesare achieved through their own direct participation in

learning activities without too much classroom interface.

    b. Each term of the Ateneo-Regis MBA Program lasts

for eight (8) weeks. Each course meets once a week for

four (4) hours from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. The maximum

number of students per class is twenty-ve (25).

    c. The regular load is one (1) subject per term, but a

maximum of two (2) courses is allowed.

    d. The program can be completed in two (2) years and

two (2) terms if one (1) course is taken per term. Iftwo (2) courses are taken per term, the program can be

completed in fourteen (14) months, or one (1) year and

    one (1) term.

    e. The Ateneo-Regis MBA Program consists of the

    following courses:

    Core Course 33 units

    Electives 6 units

    Integrating Course 3 units

    Total 42 units

  • 8/10/2019 Ateneo-regis Mba Program 2010updated

    18/35

    f. Each course has a detailed learning guide (module) for

the entire course, as well as for every class meeting. The

module serves as the road map for both the students and

their professors. Each meeting has a well-dened goaland objective. The reading materials and cases for each

session are provided prior to the start of the classes.

Thus, on the rst day of the class, students are expected

to have read the reading assignments and to be ready for

    discussion.

    2. Proram Deler: Facltato ad StdetParticipation

The curriculum for the Ateneo-Regis MBA Programincludes analytical learning through time intensive coursesdesigned specically for working adults. The design of thecourses recognizes that adults learn most effectively and mostrapidly through a process of self-learning, bringing both lifeand work experiences that can be a learning resource for the

    other students in the class.

Self-learning occurs before class so that each participantcan contribute in a meaningful way to group discussions and be

an effective resource in shared-learning. Shared-learning occursin the classroom, where each participant learns from the lifeand professional experiences of others.

Each adult learner must be a participant, with the secondary

responsibility for the learning of others through sharing. Theprincipal responsibility of the facilitator is to assist in the

learning process, not to teach the technical content of thecourse. The facilitator is a technical expert in the eld and willanswer questions beyond the competence of the participants, but the primary responsibility for learning belongs to the

    15

  • 8/10/2019 Ateneo-regis Mba Program 2010updated

    19/3516

student. Ordinarily, the facilitator will not lecture for extended

    periods of time.

At rst, students may feel they dont have much experiencethey can share in the curricular area. However, as the courseprogresses most students are delighted to discover that theyhave more relevant experiences than they rst thought.

The level of learning to meet the learning objectives of thecourses is quite high. Students will need to think at the creating

and evaluating levels. They operate at the evaluation level whenthey form judgments and assessments by combining their own

medley of experiences and learning with disparate conictingand complex facts. They operate at the creating level when theyoriginate, integrate, and combine ideas into a product plan, orproposal that is new. They will nd that all elements of thesecourses will focus on the learning outcome primarily at thecreating and evaluating level.
