Basic KVMWhat is KVM switching?KVM stands or: Keyboard, Video and Mouse. KVM switching allows you to control multiple computers rom a single keyboard,

monitor, and mouse (Console).

By using a KVM switch, you will save money on redundant hardware, consolidate desk space, and increase perormance by having

multiple computers working as one.

Want to use your speakers, microphone, USB hub and even Ethernet hub along with the KVM switch? ATEN integrates all o these

multimedia unctions into one KVM switch.

With a KVM switch, it is possible to access any computer on the installation rom a single console anytime you want to. This provides

operators with the centralized control o a large number o computers rom a single console.

Advanced KVM1. Managing Multiple Servers

Additional KVM switches can increase the overall capacity o your installation. There are two methods or expanding your KVM switch installation: Cascading and Daisy-chaining.

Cascading

Cascading involves using the KVM port(s) o a parent KVM switch (one that is above a switch linked downrom it) to connect to the user ports o a child KVM switch. With numerous child switches linked down romthe parent, the eect is reminiscent o the way water cascades down a waterall. Cascading adds capacity toa KVM installation, but the parent KVM switch loses at least one KVM port or each cascaded child switch.

Daisy-chaining

Daisy-chaining reers to connecting two KVM switches via dedicated daisy-chain ports. The switches arestrung together in a chain, similar to the way children make chains o daisies by tying the end o one daisy tothe head o another.A daisy-chained installation does not utilize KVM ports and user ports to connect one switch to another asin a cascaded installation, and thereby preserves the number o valuable ports. The port capacity o a daisy-chained installation is the total o all the KVM ports or all o the KVM switches on the chain.

3. Turning Your USB KVM Switch or Computer Sharing Device into a Combo (PS/2-USB) Device

USB port technology has emerged in response to the prolieration o external peripheral devices (keyboards, mice, scanners, digitalcameras, removable drives, etc.), that are increasingly being connected to the latest generation o computers. ATEN already oers severaltypes o KVM switch with USB console ports (or keyboards and mice) to meet this market shit. However, we know that many o ourcustomers want to use a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse or a PS/2 keyboard and USB mouse with their USB KVM Switch.

To satisy our customers, ATEN has developed USB-to-PS/2 converters that allow users to install a PS/2 keyboard and either a PS/2 or USBmouse on their USB KVM Switch or Computer Sharing Device.

Since server room space is limited and the cost of maintenance continues to rise, networkadministrators now more than ever rely upon nding a solution to reduce requirements and costs.

ATEN LCD KVM switches/LCD consoles require only 1U of rack space. This eliminates the needfor a separate monitor requiring at least 5U of space, thus saving valuable space in your serverroom.

6. Accessing and Controlling Servers rom Any Computer

ATEN KVM over IP solutions allow operators to monitor and access computers from remotelocations. They utilize the TCP/IP protocol making connected servers accessible from anycomputer on the LAN or Internet. The Slideaway KVM Switches integrate a rack-mounted keyboard, video,

mouse (KVM) console with an 8- or 16-port KVM switch in housing that

is slightly less than 1U or easy installation and manipulation in 1U o rack

space.

Second Console Port

For urther convenience and fexibility, the Slideaway products also support

an extra external keyboard, monitor, and mouse console.

PS/2 and USB Compatible

Slideaway LCD KVM switches support computers with a PS/2 or USB

interace via optional custom KVM cables adapter modules making them
