California Standards:

Investigation & Experimentation:Solve problems, explore societal issues

Essential Questions:

What is your “Right to Know” in the workplace and how do you interpret the information provided? What is one chemical hazard (or potential hazard) you are exposed to regularly? How does this chemical affect you? What are the properties of the chemical?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS:Given: Graphic organizers, a chemical compound, and relevant resources

learner will: Reach an informed decision as to the risk of certain compounds encountered in daily life

by: Interpreting current scientific literature and news sources

color coded flow chart on next page

Individual Instruction:• Download the three files from

Edmodo: Info_from_MSDS, Flinn_ethyl_acetate, and Fisher_ethyl_acetate.

• Complete the questions on the Info_from_MSDS worksheet and submit the completed worksheet on Edmodo.

• Read Tuesday’s Achieve 3000 article titled “Flies Bugging Bees,” complete all six steps of the process, and complete the Current Events Summary graphic organizer. Submit this organizer on Edmodo.

• Research your particular compound and complete the Edmodo graphic organizer: due as an exit slip from the station on Edmodo

Direct Instruction:• Sections of the MSDS• Interpreting the MSDS• Project Introduction: Pick a chemical

compound that influences the health and safety of your community in some way. Examples to consider: food additives, additives to plastics, air pollution, contaminants in our water, etc. You will complete a series of data organizers regarding your compound before writing a report that summarizes your findings. You must get your compound choice approved by Dr. Kauffman. Complete a KWL organizer about your chemical compound.

Collaborative Station:• Complete the Edmodo MSDS

Scavenger Hunt and submit your answers there.

• Complete the “What Makes a Good Source” Edmodo activity and read through the information provided there: due as an exit slip from the station on Edmodo.
