MARCH 20, 2011 2ND SUNDAY OF LENT At the Table of God’s Word: Part V in the Parish Liturgy Series The structure of the Mass includes two principal parts: The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Both parts of the Mass form one single act of divine worship. The Church speaks about these two parts of the Mass as two tables of spiritual nourishment. “The Church is nourished spiritually at the twofold table of God’s word and of the Eucharist: from the one it grows in wisdom and from the other in holiness. In the word of God the divine covenant is announced; in the Eucharist the new and everlasting covenant is re- newed. On the one hand the history of salvation is brought to mind by means of human sounds; on the other it is made manifest in the sacramental signs of the liturgy.” (Introduction to the Lectionary, #10) We’ve become familiar with hearing three scripture passages at Sunday’s liturgy. The selection of these readings is one of the greatest benefits of the Second Vatican Council (1962- 1965) which called for opening up more widely the richness of the bible for God’s people to hear. Prior to the Second Vatican Council there were only two scripture passages pro- claimed at Sunday Mass and always in a one year cycle. That means that every year we heard the same scriptures. Today we are blessed with three readings in a three year cycle which gives us a much fuller exposure to the Word of God. Each of the three cycles draws from one of the three evan- gelists as its primary Gospel text. Thus Cycle A draws from Matthew, Cycle B from Mark and Cycle C from Luke. John’s Gospel is used on various feasts and on a number of Sun- days, for example, in the Easter season. The first reading is taken from the Old Testament and was selected because of its message being in harmony with the Gospel. In the Easter Season the first reading is always taken from the Acts of the Apostles because it is the post-resurrection account of the life of the Church. The second reading is taken from the writ- ings (Letters) of an Apostle or the Book of Revelation, de- pending on the season. The second reading is not ordinarily directly related to the Gospel or Old Testament reading but is rather a continuous reading week by week of a particular Letter. After the readings and also after the homily we may take a few moments in silence so that Word of God can sink into our hearts and by the power of the Holy Spirit have an effect on our lives. Another use of scripture in the Liturgy of the Word is the Responsorial Psalm, which is intended to foster a meditation on the Word of God that has been proclaimed. The cantor or psalmist leads the congregation in singing the psalm from the ambo since the psalm is part of scripture and the ambo is the place from which the Word of God is proclaimed. The proclamation of the Gospel is the high point of the Lit- urgy of the Word. We regard the Gospels as the fullness of God’s revelation. The assembly rises to its feet to greet the Lord present in his Word. It is our belief as Catholics that when the scriptures are proclaimed Christ is truly present in the assembly. Our standing, our chanting an Alleluia, using a special Book of the Gospel and sometimes carrying candles and incense in a procession to the ambo are marks of re- spect that highlight the significance of the Gospel proclama- tion. At the Table of God’s Word: Part V in the Parish Liturgy Series

The structure of the Mass includes two principal parts: The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

In the word of God the divine covenant is announced; in the Eucharist the new and everlasting covenant is re-newed. On the one hand the history of salvation is brought to mind by means of human sounds; on the other it is made manifest in the sacramental signs of the liturgy.” (Introduction to the Lectionary, #10)

We’ve become familiar with hearing three scripture passages at Sunday’s liturgy. The selection of these readings is one of the greatest benefits of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) which called for opening up more widely the richness of the bible for God’s people to hear. Prior to the Second Vatican Council there were only two scripture passages pro-claimed at Sunday Mass and always in a one year cycle. That means that every year we heard the same scriptures. Today we are blessed with three readings in a three year cycle

which gives us a much fuller exposure to the Word of God. Each of the three cycles draws from one of the three evan-gelists as its primary Gospel text. The second reading is not ordinarily directly related to the Gospel or Old Testament reading but is rather a continuous reading week by week of a particular Letter.

Trivia Night Thank You Thank you to all who supported St. Mary School Trivia Night & Auc-tion. More than 130 people attended the evening of entertainment, complete with team trivia contests and both live and silent auctions. Harris Kal, a Hollywood personality who starred on Happy Days, Simon and Simon, Disney’s Herbie the Love Bug and in the movie The Babe, was the auctioneer for the evening. Much fun and laughter filled Diantha Hall. Trivia teams answered questions, named that tune and were on their feet clapping, singing and dancing. This evening deliv-ered something fun for everyone. Among the live auction items were a vacation stay in Michigan, a signed Toews Blackhawk Jersey, an hour long plane ride and lunch at Lake Geneva, and a Cubs package for Ron Santo day. There was a wide array of more than 50 silent auction items such as autographed sports memorabilia, a handmade laptop hutch desk, an American Girl Doll with her very own SMA school uniform, a Chicago site seeing event package, a beautiful violin, and milk cookies and a bedtime story to be read by SMA Kindergarten teacher, Ms. M. Plus there were another 40 raffle ticket items to take a chance to win. There was defi-nitely something for everyone. The Trivia Night and Auction is the largest fundraiser of the year for St. Mary School. The total income for the evening almost topped $24,000. While the final net profit numbers are still being calculated, expenses were kept low thanks to the generosity of numerous donors. THANK YOU donors. Proceeds from the event benefit all children who use our school and facilities of St. Mary Parish. We are blessed to provide quality Catholic education and faith formation for the chil-dren of our parish and community. Thank you for your support!

Registration Weekend April 9 & 10, 2011 Do you need to register as a member of St. Mary Parish? Come to the parish office at the far end of the narthex after mass and we’ll help make you an official member of Saint Mary of the Annunciation!

the Gospel goes back to the third century as an-other sign to show the importance of the Gospel. The deacon asks the priest’s blessing as he pre-

pares to proclaim the Gospel. In a new translation for the blessing the priest prays: “May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips that you may proclaim the Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.”

Notice our response when the deacon or priest announces: “A reading from the holy Gospel according to N.” We re-spond, “Glory to you, O Lord.” We recognize the real pres-ence of Christ in our midst in the proclamation of the Gospel and so we greet Christ directly with our acclamation: “Glory to you, O Lord.” This response in the revised missal only differs with the addition of the “O” before “Lord.” While the deacon signs the Gospel book we sign our foreheads, lips and heart praying silently that God’s word will find a home in us. After proclaiming the Gospel the faithful once again re-spond to the living word by acclaiming: “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.” And the deacon or priest kisses the Gospel book saying quietly: “Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away.”

The revision of the Roman Missal does not include any changes in the translation of the scriptures proclaimed at Mass. Revised scripture translations will come at a later time.

We will continue our review of the Liturgy of the Word next week when we look at the Homily, the Creed, and the Gen-eral Intercessions.

(Continued from page 1)

For Reflection and Action Pre-read the appointed scriptures for Sunday’s Mass a day or more before you come to church. Spend a little time thinking and praying over the texts. See if you no-tice a difference in your appreciation of the scriptures when they are proclaimed.

How do you think a regular hearing of the Word of God at Mass can affect your spiritual outlook?

“Change the World in 60 Seconds” by Tom Peterson

Tom Peterson was an award winning national advertis-ing executive, but lukewarm in his faith. Then, in 1997,

he attended a Catholic men’s retreat. While praying before the Blessed Sacrament, he experienced a profound spiritual transforma-tion and a clear vocational calling. God was inviting him to use his talents in television media for a greater good... to evangelize the world..Soon after, Peterson founded CatholicsComeHome.org and VirtueMedia.org, two educational non-profit media apostolates that promote evangelization and the sanctity of life. The sites are helping hundreds or thousand of souls come home to the Catholic Church. In this motivating presentation, Tom shares how just 60 seconds can truly change the world, often one life at a time. Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the

parish to continue the program and offer new material.

Did You Take Your Rice Bowl? This Lent St. Mary Parish will participate in Operation Rice Bowl, a program organized by Catholic Relief Services that has been provid-ing assistance all over the world for more than 30 years.

Each year, Operation Rice Bowl invites us to pray with our families and faith communities; fast in solidarity with those who hunger; learn more about our global community and the challenges of poverty over-seas; and give sacrificial contributions to those in need.

Each Lent, nearly 13,000 faith communities across the United States participate to demonstrate solidarity with the poor around the world. Seventy-five percent of Operation Rice Bowl donations come to CRS to help fund development programs designed to increase food secu-rity around the world. Twenty-five percent of the donations support hunger and poverty alleviation efforts in dioceses within the United States. You’ll find much more information, family activities, prayers, and inspi-ration at the Operation Rice Bowl website: http://orb.crs.org.

With the Help of God On our own we cannot live the life God intends for us. Like Abraham, our lives can produce great fruit only if we follow God in faith. This week, pray for the grace to follow God with stronger faith. Pray also for the gift to see the poor in our midst so that we may assist them, for the fruit of faith is love. Catholic Relief Ser-vices’ Operation Rice Bowl supports programs that help the most vulnerable in communities in Indonesia and around the world.

The Extra Effort Saint Paul says we are all called to a holy life. We may think that Lent is only about fasting from food or abstaining from meat, but no. The Church encourages us to give more time to prayer, to offer personal service to needy people, and to give up something we really like, not something we’ll never miss. The only thing we can’t do is avoid Lent altogether. This would separate us from God and the community of faith, and seriously call our discipleship into question. These additional practices and penances should deepen our awareness of our daily gifts from our all-loving God. Shifting our attention away from ourselves frees us to offer our abilities and resources to God, to God’s church, and to our world. This Lent let’s count our blessings—each and every one—and ask God to conform our hearts even more to the divine will.

Fast from anger and worry, feed on patience. Fast from negative thinking, feast on positive thinking. Fast from bitterness, feed on love and forgiveness. Fast from words that wound, feast on words that heal. Fast from gravity, feast on joy and humor.

Sometimes due to circum-stances in our lives we miss important sacraments. If you are a baptized Catholic who has received first Communion but was un-able to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation this is your chance to participate in catechetical sessions. At the completion of these sessions an adult Confirmation celebra-tion will be on June 1, 2011 at St. Edna’s Catholic Church in Arling-ton Heights. In order to be confirmed on this day you will need to do the following:

• Obtain a recent copy (within 6 months) of your Baptismal certificate from the parish in which you were baptized

• Participate in the preparation classes which consist of prayer, input, discussion and information on the Catholic faith

• A $35.00 participation fee will be charged to cover costs of materials

• Contact your parish representative (pastor, RCIA coordi-nator, deacon)

• Register with Sue Matousek by March 25, 2011 Classes are held in meeting rooms #1 and #2 in the new church and are handicapped accessible.
