“Good Things in Small Packages” By the Venerable Carl Walter Wright
“Alleluia. Christ is Risen. The Lord is Risen
indeed. Alleluia!” Dear St. Andrew’s: Spring has sprung. Christ
is risen. And I speak to you from my heart.
I am grateful for the resurrection that is taking
place in our midst. I hope you are not missing the
many signs of life all around us. Most obvious is
the babies: in addition to the three little ones
baptised on Easter Day and the Baldauf children
this month, we now hear the babies cry each
Sunday. It’s like music to our ears; for some of us
remember when there were no babies here. Happily,
we’ve had to resurrect our Child Care program
during worship.
Another sign was the overwhelming success of
our recent Winter Relief ministry to the homeless
men of Anne Arundel County. As usual, we
weren’t sure, at first, if we could find a leader. Not
sure, that is, until David Richardson answered
God’s nudge and ably coordinated this ministry. As
usual, in our planning, we wondered whether we
were going to be able to pull it off because we
appeared to be so few in number. But when the
time came we were blessed with an abundance of
volunteers/ministers, all of whom are members of
our extended St. Andrew’s family! And,
miraculously, out of gratitude, the men gave us a
Christmas cactus and an awesome video of St.
Andrew’s!
Another life-giving sign is our music. We are
so fortunate to have Mrs. Joan Wibbe among us.
Joan is not only an able musician; she is also a
Christian leader who has added much to our
fellowship. Most visible is our wonderful choir.
One St. Andrew’s family member, who hadn’t
attended in several years, was here on Easter Day.
Having grown up in this church she noted many
improvements (e.g. renovated parish hall and
narthex, newly-paved parking lot, beautiful library,
et.al.). But when asked what impressed her the
most she said, without hesitation, the choir! She
was deeply moved by the Wesleyan anthem, “And
Can It Be?”
“And can it be that I should gain and interest in
the Savior’s blood!
Died he for me?-who cause his pain! For me?-
who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be that thou, my
God, shouldst die for me?!”
Or, again, the families: I lose count of the
young families who now frequent this church – at
least a dozen. They add deeper meaning to my
expression, “St. Andrew’s Family!” They are not
the future of St. Andrew’s; they are the present,
actively involved and leading this parish. They are
God’s way of telling us that we are alive. I thank
God for them everyday.
I feel like St. John in saying there are many
other signs God has given us; but I can’t recite them
all in this one little article!
To me what’s most amazing is that all of the
aforementioned accomplishments are
disproportionally large when compared to our
relative small size. By any measure, our
attendance, giving, and ministries far surpass the
expectations “church growth experts” would have
for a family-sized parish (which is what we are).
Yet I shouldn’t be surprised. As is often said, “good
things can come in small packages.”
Remember David, the “runt of the litter,” the
ruddy little shepherd boy? David one day found
himself called to stand up to an enemy of his
people. According to 1 Samuel 17, “…there came
out from the camp of the Philistines a champion
named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits
and a span…he had greaves of bronze upon his
legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his
shoulders…and the shaft of his spear was like a
weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six
hundred shekels of iron…”
This giant looked upon David and saw
only his small size. Goliath had no idea how
experienced David was in facing and slaying
the enemies of his flock (lions, bears). So
Goliath must have been surprised when “David
put his hand in his bag and took out a stone,
and slung it, and struck the Philistine (Goliath)
on his forehead; the stone sank into his
forehead, and he fell on his face to the
ground…(Cont. on pg4)
April, 2016 “Rebuilding God’s Church – Sharing God’s Love – Changing God’s World!” Page 4
“Good Things in Small Packages” (Cont.)
Then David ran and stood over the
Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out
of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his
head with it (1 Samuel 17:49-51).”
To me St. Andrew’s Pasadena is a good
thing in a small package. We are like David,
small but mighty, a people who have weathered
many storms and survived many enemies,
within and without. Consequently, our story is
well-known. Our influence in the Diocese of
Maryland and in the Episcopal Church is
disproportionally large relative to our small
size. A praying parish, we thank God everyday
for the ways in which He uses us to His glory.
God has given us a second chance. But we
still have work to do. We now must ask the
Lord such things as: “Why have you blessed us
so, when we know we don’t deserve it?”
“What would you have us do now?” “What do
we need to change in ourselves so that we may
be more of a blessing to others?” “How can we
love and respect one another?” “How can we
be more involved in the life of Pasadena?”
“How do we live the Gospel?”
As we struggle with those questions,
please be encouraged and continue to praise
God. Like the phoenix we have risen from the
ashes, not because of favourable demographics,
or wealthy donors, or grandiose plans; but
because of God’s grace. The Lord has blessed
our small efforts. So, I exclaim with Paul,
“Glory to God whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more than we can ask or
imagine: Glory to him from generation to
generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus
for ever and ever. Amen! (Paul’s Letter to the
Ephesians 3:20-21)!”
Men of St. Andrew’s News The Men of St. Andrew’s (MOSA) held their annual St. Patrick’s Day “Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner” on Sunday March 13th. It was an unqualified success. We want to give thanks to the crew that prepared the excellent meal and served it to a hungry crowd. John Dunker spearheaded the event with the help of Chuck Wheeler, Rich Crothers, and all the Men of St. Andrews. The church funds and fellowship definitely profited from the event.
Joan & Bill’s
Sunday School Report By Joan Teakle
Our cover photo shows the joy that the Sunday School class had as they resurrected the buried “Alleluia” on Easter Morning. On a warm Sunday at the beginning of Lent the children had made a pilgrimage to the memorial garden and buried our Alleluias. Their act was symbolic of the tradition to forego the use of Alleluia during our season of fasting and reflection. Now that Lent is over we can again say, “Alleluia, Alleluia, Let us go forth in the name of Christ! Thanks be to God, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

“The Bishop is Coming! The Bishop is Coming!” Want to know more about the Episcopal Church? Want to be blessed by the
Bishop? Want to renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? Then join our
Inquirers’ Class. It is customary in our Anglican tradition to present Christians who
would like to be confirmed, or received from another denomination, or have one’s
faith reaffirmed, or simply to be blessed, to the Bishop. Our Assistant Bishop
Chilton Knudsen will be at St. Andrew’s on Sunday June 12th at the 10:00 a.m.
Eucharist. We will have a great Celebration of Ministry that day. The Inquirers’
Class our preparation for that celebration. This class is open to all who are
interested in learning more about he Church. It is geared towards those, regardless
of age, who would like to be confirmed, received, or reaffirmed as Episcopalians.
It will be called “Why We Do What We Do When We Do It!” and will start
following the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist on April 17th. Whether you’re an ole
Episcopalian or a new one you are welcome to attend. We promise it will be about
45-minutes. It will be fun. And there will be no such thing as a dumb question in
this class, unless it is from the Rector! Father Carl
From the Book of Common Prayer: We give you thanks, most gracious God, for the beauty of earth and sky and sea; for the richness of mountains, plains, and rivers; for the songs of birds and the loveliness of flowers. We praise you for these good gifts, and pray that we may safeguard them for our posterity. Grant that we may continue to grow in our grateful enjoyment of your abundant creation, to the honor and glory of your Name, now and for ever. Amen.

Saint Mark the Evangelist
On April 25th the Episcopal Church remembers Saint Mark the Evangelist. Tradition holds that Mark (sometimes called John Mark) was the young man who lost his clothes when Jesus was taken in the garden of Gethsemane (see Mark 14:51). It is also thought by many that the "upper room" where the Last Supper was held was in Mark's parents' home. Mark's mother, whose name was Mary, was a follower of Jesus and a friend of the disciples. The apostle Peter seems to have taken young Mark under his wing. Mark is listed by Paul as one of Peter's followers in the early controversies in the Jerusalem Church. Mark was also a missionary companion to Paul and a lifelong friend of Barnabas. He was in Rome with Peter and Paul, but escaped the Neronian persecution. According to the historian Eusebius, he traveled to Egypt and founded the great Alexandrian Church there. Also, it is believed that he was martyred there by a mob of angry pagans. Mark is generally regarded as the author of the second gospel, which bears his name. It is sometimes called the Gentile Gospel because it seems to be directed more toward a Gentile than a Jewish audience.
Almighty God, we thank you for the gospel of your Son Jesus Christ, committed to his church by the hand of your evangelist Saint Mark; and we pray that, being firmly grounded in its truth, we may be faithful to its teaching both in word and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On May 31st the Episcopal church remembers
The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
According to Luke's Gospel, Mary,
immediately after being told of the forthcoming
birth of Jesus, went to visit her cousin
Elizabeth. Elizabeth was also pregnant and her
child was to be John the Baptist. This famous
visit was important for several reasons. When
Elizabeth saw Mary, the baby leaped in her
womb, not an uncommon experience in
pregnancy but in this case regarded as a
supernatural occurrence, signifying little John's
excitement at the presence of the Savior whom
he was to proclaim. Elizabeth was the first to
recognize Mary as the Mother of the Lord,
exclaiming "Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb!"
The moving and eloquent canticle, Magnificat,
is recorded by Luke at this point: "My soul
magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in
God my Savior" (Luke 1:46-47). It is called the
"Song of Mary" and although it could hardly
have been a stenographer's report of what the
Blessed Mother said at the time, it most surely
reflects her sentiments and the kind of response
she must have expressed.
Father in heaven, by your grace the virgin mother of your incarnate Son was blessed in bearing him, but still more blessed in keeping your word: Grant us who honor the exaltation of her lowliness to follow the example of her devotion to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen. (From “Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2006”)
