We will hear from several committees with updates

and great information to keep members involved in

club happenings. They will also answer questions

we have had, but were too embarrassed to ask…such

as:

How do I look up another member’s phone

number ;

My neighbor asked me if Rotary would

donate to their charity – what do I

do?

What is School Shop?

I’d like to help with fundraising – is there

anything besides the auction for this?

My co-worker says she doesn’t live or work

in Eldridge and didn’t think she

could joinNorth Scott Rotary. Is that

true?

This could even be a “Stump Your Fellow

Rotarian” program.

The following will represent their committee on

updates and to answer your many questions:

Community Needs chair Chris Connolly will update

us on the procedure and dates to apply for funding

requests.

Sheila Volrath of our Finance Committee will

update us on the Funds in our Educational

Foundation.

Gene Hoth from our Per Mar Volunteers committee

will give us an update on fundraising opportunities.

Kelly Meyer chair of our Special Olympics

committee will inform us about upcoming Special

Olympics volunteering opportunities.

Lorraine Lynch, Julia Blazevic, and Margo McInnis

from the PR committee will update us on many

aspects of promoting North Scott Rotary and

different ways to let the Quad City community

know what we do to help the community.

Sheila Volrath will also update us on our School

Shop.

Charlie Jones will talk to us about Membership.

Our new and improved website will be

demonstrated live with instructions on how to

log in for member only access.

January 6, 2012 Member: Dick Cole Trip to Turkey

Sixty three members and guests enjoyed Dick Cole’s

pictures and knowledge about the country of Turkey. Dick and Shirley travelled there in March of 2011,

spending about 3 weeks. Dick always takes a lot of pictures and has trouble sorting out just a few to show in

his allotted time for a program. Turkey is surrounded by

3 sea’s, has a population of 80 million people and is over 98 percent Islamic.

Dick attended a Rotary meeting in Turkey, but it was a

very expensive outing. It was between $60-$70, after he arranged transportation and paid for the meal. He was

glad that his driver turned him down to attend, as it

would have been even more.

Turkey is not a third world country as many people think. They fly their flag proudly everywhere you look. There

are a lot of dogs roaming around in Turkey, but they all

have tags in the upper part of their ears. Dick purchased a colorful scarf in Turkey to keep his neck warm. He

received a lot of grief over the scarf, because it was the colors of the losing soccer team in Turkey. It became a

joke among the other travelers and it showed up regularly in the pictures.

In one home where they stayed, the bed was a wooden

pallet. A heater in the room was perched on a pile of

blankets. He showed a new “green” farm machine, which left 7 people unemployed. The ones that do not finish

school will most likely become Sheppard’s (if they are lucky). Dick and Shirley rode in a hot air balloon that was

designed to hold 22 people. The tour group that they use

line up unusual things to do, personal homes to stay in and sometimes they even camp out to save money.

Schinckel, and Melanie Blazevic, daughter of Julia. Also Patrick Olsen, guest of Seth Porter, Bill Rossow, guest of

Kim Wilkins and Paul Holzworth, guest of Bill Tubbs.

These two new members were inducted on Friday: Christine Garrow, Youth Librarian at Scott County Library

& sponsored by Paul Seelau. Also Nathan Kessler, Agricultural Loan Officer with Blackhawk Bank & Trust in

Princeton, IA., sponsored by Pete Wislander.

Carolyn Scheibe gave $20 to the educational fund for the

birth of her new granddaughter, to daughter Lisa in Des Moines. John Maxwell also gave $20 for Kara’s decision

to attend Iowa State University in the fall of 2012. Kelly Meyer was the sergeant and reflected on the loss of 2

special Rotarians this past week and all others that we

have lost around the holidays in the past few years. $70 will go to the educational fund, in memory of George

White and Dorothy White. January birthdays were celebrated and $15 was collected for cake.
