First, you need to gure out some things aboutyoursel. This step can be as simple as writing downa list o your interests (like video games or rockclimbing), your hopes and dreams (like helping

others), your talents (like writing or math ability),and your weaknesses (i youre squeamish at thesight o blood, or example, you might not want tobe a doctor).

Follow up on this inormal exercise by takingsome ormal assessments to determine yourinterests and abilities. Common assessments

include the Kuder (www.kuder.com), Bridges (www.bridges.org), Career Cruising (www.careercruising.com), and Myers-Briggs (www.myersbriggs.com)tests. These tools give most o our students some

career exploration awareness by the time they hit

eighth or ninth grade.Ask your principal or counselor about the career

assessments available at your school.

Gather inormation about what you can earn in thecareers in which you are interested. Find out whetherthe careers you are considering have a promisingutureare they adding or losing jobs? Check out theeducation youll need to enter those careers.

The chart on pages 1011 presents data on 25possible proessions. Remember, though, that these

are just a sampling o careers available in the cluster.Go to OSCAR, O-NET, or another resource to

investigate other careers.

Create Yor TAP

Once you have a better idea o your interests andabilities, you are ready to plan or high school andbeyond. The Texas Achievement Plan, or TAP, is your

plan or preparing or the career o your choice.First student choose a cluster, not a particular

occupational goal. In the eighth grade a studentmight choose Law and then later become interestedin a narrower eld such as orensic crime or nationalsecurity.

The program o study you chooseand yourplandoes not stop with graduation rom high

school. A student could then pursue a two-year degreeas an x-ray technician or a our-year degree as aradiologist.

You should set up a TAP that takes you throughcareer preparation after high school, revising yourblueprint as needed as you go along. If your careerplans include college study, ask your counselorabout tests required for admission to college,such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.

Many Texas schools oer innovative programs toprepare students or specic career areas. Theseinclude career and technical education (CTE)programs, academies, and magnet schools. Once

youve decided on a career direction, ask yourcounselor about special programs in your area that

may provide related experiences in your chosen career.Samuel Odamah enrolled in the architecture

program at the University o Texas at Arlington,having ound his career calling at Dallass SkylineCareer Development Center, a high school with careerprograms in a number o dierent elds.

Skyline is one o the ew schools in the country

that oer programs in architecture, Odamah says.In some careers, Skyline students could even getproessional certications or licenses right in highschool. It was a great place because you could nd outwhether you really wanted to enter a career.

Odamah says that the career cluster system atSkyline taught him the value o planning or his careerand his lie. We learned about planning ahead, he

says. Those who plan things ahead o time dont haveto catch up. Its just a matter o what a person wantsout o lie. Planning gives you a better platormor success.

Public Saety, Corrections & Securitycluster, or example, includes police

nationally. Everyone is using more andmore technology. Even or 911 dispatchers;their jobs are much more complex than justanswering the phone and notiying the re orpolice departments.

Rather than consisting o a ew coreoccupations such as patrol ocer orreghter, the cluster is becoming home to more specialized jobs.

Forensics, or example, has expanded tremendously thanks toDNA technology, says Sherman. Most agencies have specialunits like crime labs and cyber crime experts. There is a lot morespecialization in law enorcement than there was 20 years ago.

New security technologies and techniques mean that those working

in Law, Public Saety, Corrections & Security need more educationthan ever. I you want to be an attorney, you have to go to law

school, o course, says Coee. But or

law enorcement, re, and emergencypersonnel, dierent jurisdictions

have dierent requirements. Somedepartments require our years ocollege, others two years, and some

just high school. I you arelooking at this cluster, you

shouldnt just look at entry-level requirements, but theeducation needed to getwhere you want to go inthe proession.

Almost every job in Law, Public Saety, Corrections & Security

requires you to pass an exam. Acing these tests can earn you

certications in dierent specialties or can mean a promotion.Some examinations, such as those or reghters, involve physicaltasks, so being in good physical condition is essential.

Women and members o minority groups are in big demand inthe cluster. In a state as diverse as Texas, agencies want the makeupo their communities to be refected in their workorces. Forexample, more and more women have come into reghting in the

last 10 years, says Jake Soteriou, division director or standardsand certication or the Texas Association o Fireghters. Theimage is no longer that o the big brute reman. We have oundthat just about anybody can do this job i he or she is willing towork and learn.

Experts agree that the most important skills or people in the

cluster to have are strong interpersonal and communicationabilities. A person in this area really needs people skills, whetherhe or she is an attorney, in law enorcement, or a reghter,says Coee. They need to be able to deal with people in crisis or

dangerous situations.Soteriou sums up the advice he would give to

a young person considering Law, Public Saety,Corrections & Security: Its very rewardingknowing that you are doing something to help save

lives and property. You may not make a ortune,but you are doing work that helps people. I youare willing to have an open mind and keep learning,

you can move up the ranks. Within the cluster,

there are so many dierent opportunities orcareer advancement.

Communication is a constant in law andpublic saety careers. Reading, writing,and public speaking are integral parts o

daily work in law enorcement, reghting,and legal practice. Sergeant Jim Beck o theAustin Police Department says police ocers,or example, must be able to write well and

recall detailed acts when composing incidentreports. You have to be able to articulate whathappened, what you did, and why, says Beck,

a 12-year veteran.Police ocers and reghters oten interact

with the public, which requires good publicspeaking and social skills. Routine duties inboth elds include giving presentations to

children and adults about re prevention,personal saety, and crime prevention.

Presentation skills are essential or

lawyers presenting cases beore ajudge or jury, but they arent a

requirement or all attorneys.Some civil law attorneysnever end up in court, saysCindy Greenlea, a ormer

attorney and a criminaljustice instructor or the

Denton Independent SchoolDistrict. Greenlea addsthat attorneys practicingcivil, criminal, oradministrative law spend

a lot o time reading, writing, and researchingI practicing criminal law, they also rely oninvestigative skills and must dig through polic

quickest route there.Fireghters in Beaumont who respond to

a hazardous material spill review a chemicalinventory list online rom their trucks to conrmhow best to saely contain and clean up thechemical, says Captain Patrick Grimes, a 27-yearveteran reghter.

Attorneys have access to wireless Internet and

Ive never been bored onesingle day o the 12 years Ive

been here, Beck says. Dailyduties or police ocers canrun the gamut, rom catching dangerousspeeders, to patrolling districts, to meetingwith citizens. Ocers can be called to

respond to a domestic dispute, a tracaccident, or another emergency at any timewhile working their shit, which can rangerom 8 to 12 hours a day. Other positionsin the police department, such as detective,require more oce-bound work.

Fireghters dont battle res every day,Grimes says. They are constantly training

and preparing or the next re or otheremergency. This job requires physicaltness and a thorough understanding othe technical aspects o the multiple toolsreghters use. Medical rescue skills arealso crucial. Since they are oten the rst

responders to an emergency, reghters willassist the injured or sick until an ambulancearrives. Fireghters work long shits, live at a

rehouse when on duty, and cooperate as ateam. Beaumont reghters spend 24 hourson the job ollowed by 48 hours o.

Attorneys schedule and workenvironment depend upon the law theypractice. I you go to work or a large civillaw rm, particularly when you rst start,
