The subject of the movie is, more or less, the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus. I saw the movie years ago and it accurately, vividly, and gruesomely portrays what the physical experiences of Christ were like when He was delivered up by the Jews to the Romans for crucifixion. At the time of the movies release, there was much negative reaction to the violence depicted in the film. In this regard, one is prompted to ask the question, why should we consider the sufferings of the Christ? First, we should consider the sufferings of the Christ because Jesus was God in the flesh. Without the doctrine of the deity of Christ, the sufferings of Christ would be loveless. When we consider that Jesus was God Himself and took on the form of man to redeem sinful man from the clutches of Satan, we recognize the true love of God. Through sin, man became Gods enemy, but through Christ, man can be Gods friend once again. Jesus said, And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life(John 3:14-16). Paul wrote, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us(Romans 5:8). It was on account of Gods love for His creation that Jesus died on the cross. The sufferings of the Christ cause us to consider Gods love for us. God bless you, and I love you. Kevin Cauley

The Significance of the Sufferings of the Christ (Part 1)

Perhaps you have heard of the movie, The Passion of the Christ directed by Mel Gibson. The subject of the movie is, more or less, the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus. I saw the movie years ago and it accurately, vividly, and gruesomely portrays what the physical experiences of Christ were like when He was delivered up by the Jews to the Romans for crucifixion. At the time of the movie’s release, there was much negative reaction to the violence depicted in the film.

Through sin, man became God’s enemy, but through Christ, man can be God’s friend once again. Jesus said, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:14-16). Paul wrote, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). It was on account of God’s love for His creation that Jesus died on the cross. The sufferings of the Christ cause us to consider God’s love for us.

God bless you, and I love you.

All Things The Indestructible Word

Considered

The psalmist said, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89; cf. 1

Peter 1:23-25).

Someone said, “His words have passed into laws, they have passed into proverbs, they

have passed into consolations, but they have never passed away”. It stands, though

infidel may attack it (Jeremiah 36:22-25).

When Antiochus Epiphanes became ruler in Syria in 175 B.C. he destroyed the Jewish

temple, sold the people of Jerusalem into slavery, and sought to do away with their

sacred writings, forcing Greek culture upon the Jews. This wall all done in an effort to

substitute Zeus worship for the worship of God. Frank E. Hirsch in “Abomination of

Desolation,” wrote, “The observance of all Jewish laws, especially those relating to the

Sabbath and to circumcision, were forbidden under pain of death. The Jewish cult was

set aside in all the cities of Judaea, sacrifices must be brought to the pagan deities.

Representatives of the crown everywhere enforced the edict. Once a month the search

was instituted, and whoever had secreted a copy of the law or had observed the rite of

circumcision was condemned to death. However, God saw to it that efforts to destroy

the sacred writings of the Old Testament failed.

Roman emperor Diocletian decreed death for any person who owned the Bible. After 2

years he boasted, “ I have completely exterminated the Christian writings from the face

of the earth.” In fact, he is said to have erected a monument over the ashes of burned

Bibles. However, when Constantine came to the throne and desired copies of the

Bible, offering a reward to anyone who could deliver one, within 23 hours 50 copies of

God’s word were offered to the emperor.

Voltaire was a notorious French infidel. In 1778, he boasted that within 100 years the

Bible would be no more. Later, the very press that printed the blasphemous prediction

was used to print Bibles, and the house in which he lived was used by the Geneva

Bible Society to store Bible and as a distribution center.

Bob Ingersoll, an American agnostic, once held a Bible up and boasted, “In 15 years I

will have this book in the morgue.” Within 15 years, Ingersoll was in the morgue;

however, the word of God lives on. Wendell Winkler

The congregation rejoiced last Wednesday

evening when Mary Hardage put her Lord

and Savior on in baptism. We welcome Mary

to the Family of God in New Boston.
