This Week at Galt UMC August 24, 2020 A Word from Pastor Mary [email protected] 530-417-6584 Let’s Talk Next Week’s Worship: August 30 Sermon Topic: “Elijah: Exhaustion is Allowed” Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1-13 WooHoo!!! The Central Valley District Union has given us a $10,000 grant for Local Church Renewal! The name of our 2020 Grant Request is “Fishing for Disciples! A Responsive, Interactive Inter(NET) Presence.” We have much to be grateful for in the amount of work that Pastor Joe and Margaret Luginbill have already put into our website. In fact, as it is right now, our GaltUMC.org website has been identified by the Bishop as one of the finest in the Conference. This grant will help us to take it further, so that it will include a Prayer Chapel, a Children’s Corner, a Youth Room, and a portal for Pastoral Care. This pandemic is an opportunity to reach Christian “seekers” who are surfing the internet. I have been reading studies that say there are three things that people are seeking on Church websites right now: transcendent meaning, personal healing, and engagement in a cause to make the world a better place. In short, Galt United Methodist Church! It would be wonderful if we can hire a Galt young person (or two) to engage in revamping our website. Please be in prayer, and if you come up with a name, please let Leesa Klotz or me know. Blessings, Pastor Mary _______________________________________________ There are so many ways to reach out with the love of Jesus Christ to your friends, family, and neighbors: 1) Forward the link for Worship to people on your email list with a note about something that touched you; 2) On Facebook you can post Worship from our Galt United Methodist Church Page onto your own personal page, also with a note about something you liked about it; 3) Have Pastor Mary mail you additional print copies of her sermons that you can give to those you love who need a boost of hope. Encourage the people in your world! _______________________________________________

  • I’ve received many nice get well cards during my surgery recovery time. I appreciate each and every one of them. I’ve looked them

over and have them displayed on my dining room table.

Thanks to each of you. I thank you all for your well wishes. I received one bright and cheery one I would like to share with you. Of course it made me smile!

    - - By Earl ArrantsThis past week Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount that if worry takes hold, then get back to the basics of faithful discipleship: pray, give alms, fast, love your enemy, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In short, hunger and thirst after righteousness. This week we will learn about our Lord’s power to heal, cast out demons, and perform miracles. Please join us live on Wednesdays, or watch the video later in the week. Pastor Mary can post the study on your personal Facebook page if you need her to. How fun that people in addition to Galt UMC are participating in our Bible Study -- there are nearly 300 views each week!

Smileys are recommended for ages 1 to 101. Smileys have been known to induce silliness. Side effects may include laughing, doing cartwheels, and an urge to draw more smileys. Smileys chase away the blues. Last but not least — smileys may become habit-forming.

    Sunshine Food Pantry News

District Superintendent Debra Brady featured our Sunshine Food Pantry during the yearly Central Valley District Meeting this past weekend. She spoke about how inspirational it is

that Faye Gaines and her team have continued to serve the poor in our community in spite of the pandemic, and how necessary it is that we continue doing so. Thank you Team Sunshine!!

  • Pastor Mary’s Conference Leadership

Pastors under appointment in the United Methodist Church are asked to give time to a Conference Committee or Team. Last year Pastor Mary served on the Gathering of the Orders Team, which puts on the yearly retreat for clergy. This year she has been asked by the Office of Congregational Developing to serve on the Discernment Team, a group of 12 individuals who will help train and nurture pastors to plant new communities of faith. This coming week she will complete 9 hours of continuing education to equip her for the work ahead.

Instead of the book on women who have changed the world, Pastor Mary would like to offer her own b o o k C u l t i v a t i n g Courage for our book club to enjoy and discuss together. It

w a s w r i t t e n a s a companion to a retreat that she was leading by the same name. It includes twelve lessons designed to inspire courage in addressing life’s challenges. The books are free. Seven remain – first come, first serve – so let Pastor Mary know if you would like to join us for book club. Once we know who is going to be a part of it we will set up the day and time.

How to Keep Warm in Church **Invite your neighbors and friends, and sit 12 people to a pew. **Wait for an unfamiliar hymn — and then watch the sparks fly! **Rush to the front of the sanctuary. That will warm you up, and you’ll avoid the draft in the back.
