I am very excited about this year’s Design

and Engineering Show; flip through and see

the wide range of designed products and

engineered solutions. I think you’ll agree

that the synergy between the Design and

Engineering disciplines is very evident.

For our students the ‘project show’

represents the culmination of three or

four years of university. For the School of

Engineering and Applied Science it is a time

to take pride in the year’s accomplishments

and renew and strengthen bonds with

past graduates, representatives of local

industry, government, education and other

organisations.

You are most welcome at our show – please

make the most of it by talking with students

and members of staff who will be pleased

to tell you about our students, programmes,

School and University.

Professor of Mechanical Engineering

SCHOOL OF ENGINEER-ING AND APPLIED SCIENCE

Page 9: Aston Inspired 2011

The School of Engineering & Applied Science

(EAS) has an excellent record of providing

undergraduate programmes that are

designed to meet the ever changing needs

of industry and commerce. Our programmes

are influenced by engineers, designers

and scientists from across a range of

organisations from international companies

such as E.On to small manufacturing

enterprises in Birmingham and the West

Midlands. We are proud of the employment

record of our graduates which is amongst

the highest of all UK universities.

The annual Design Show gives many of our

students the opportunity to showcase the

work they have done. We hope the work

they present will inspire our visitors whether

they are industrialists, schools and colleges,

family and friends or simply those with an

interest in our students.

Design to me is the art of expressing function through form. I enjoy the hands-on and visual aspects, but appreciate the importance of understanding the product’s purpose when generating ideas. The true beauty of a product is revealed in the details.

Each year a team of students from Aston

University takes part in the Formula Student

competition (http://www.formulastudent.

com) run by the Institution of Mechanical

Engineers. This international event held at

Silverstone tests cars almost as much as

it tests engineering and design students!

Starting from scratch in September, we build

a car to run in the competition the following

July.

This year we have seen several innovations

including: a Quality Management System

to help avoid getting in knots; full CAD

implementation; improved suspension

design; a full carbon-fibre monocoque

chassis and a class 2 entry (of design plans).

We are more ready for the event this year

than we have ever been and we are quietly

confident that this car will yield our best

result ever. Why not join us at the event?

SolidCam generated G-Codes which were transmitted from the PC to the CNC machine using TNCremoNT. TNCremoNT is a software package for data transmission between PC and HEIDENHAIN controls. The Heidenhain TNC 310 was then used to machine parts.
