Student runs fourth consecutive marathon in a bid to raise money for Help for Heroes
A student is set to run his fourth half marathon in three
years in the hopes of raising over £3,000 for Help for
Heroes.
Josh Thomson-Smith, 21, who has already ran in the Great
Birmingham run twice before, hopes to raise a large sum of
money for the Help for Heroes charity.
Josh, who studies Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, has spent a lot of his time in
Selly Oak and seen first-hand many soldiers who go into
Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical help.
Josh said: “I’ve seen the biomechanical advances being
made in my department at the university, which has really
made me think about what I can do, which is why I have
decided to run for Help for Heroes.”
Josh has already run three other marathons, including The Bupa Great North Run.
Help for Heroes was founded in 2006 by Bryn Parry OBE and his wife Emma Parry OBE after they
visited soldiers at Selly Oak Hospital (Queen Elizabeth Hospital).
The charity was created to raise money so that soldiers, who were injured while in service, had the
proper facilities to recover and receive treatments for their injuries.
Josh said: “I started running because I wanted to do something myself that could benefit so many others
in so many different ways.
“This charity has helped so many and as it nears its 10 year anniversary I would like to give those we
owe so much to something back.”
Josh’s friend, Eva Mills said: “I’m very proud [of Josh] and his commitments to raising money for good
causes. Help for Heroes is an amazing organisation and deserves every penny. Great man, great cause,
donate.”
Josh Thomson-Smith will run fourth marathon this October.

Fire Services urges women and members of minority communities to join the service
A senior female fire officer encourages females from black, Asian and ethnic minority communities to
become fire fighters.
Area commander, Sarah Warnes, calls for people to apply to become fire fighters on the day where 60
new recruitment posts become available.
Sarah explains how there are few careers around that provide ‘day-to-day’ variety and long-term
development opportunities like working for West Midlands Fire Service.
Warnes added: “We’re expecting thousands of people to apply for these highly sought-after fire-fighter
posts.
“The process is open to men and women, but we’re actively encouraging applications from female
candidates and members of the West Midlands’ minority communities.”
Councillor John Edwards, Chair of West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority, said: “This is a great
opportunity for us to ensure that the people we employ reflect the diverse communities we serve.”
Applicants must live within West Midlands Fire Service catchment area and have GCSE grade C or
above in maths and English.
However, some people were angry at the catchment area and qualifications need to apply for the
position.
Trynone Humphreys, 38, from Erdington, said: “I think it’s wrong that you can’t apply to become a fire
fighter if you live outside the West Midlands and [that you need] maths and English level 2. You didn’t
need that a few years back. And the fact that the application is online, what if we didn’t have a PC or
laptop, nonsense.”
Lance Evans, 42, said: “I think it is discrimination that you have to live in the area and the way the test
is designed and the type of questions are pretty difficult. What chance do dyslexic people, like myself,
have? And people who are switched on when it’s practical to work, and not written? I’m a fire fighter and
good at it, silly questions on paper don’t save lives.”
Applications will take place online via the wmfs.net website for two weeks until the 17th of October.

Major investigation has been launched after a teen dies under suspicious circumstances
Police have launched an investigation after a
teenager died in Erdington, on Friday 7th October.
West Midlands Police were called to The Gardens on
Friday around 8:50pm following reports that a man
was being bundled into a car before the vehicle drove
off.
The police were later called to Hunton Road, five
minutes after the original call, after reports on what
was believed to be a hit-and-run incident involving a
pedestrian.
Along with the police, an ambulance was called, but
on arrival, a 19-year-old male was found dead.
Detective Inspector Warren Hines, from the force's
CID department, said: "The family of the teenager
have been informed of his death and are being supported by specialist officers at this time."
Detectives have linked to two incidents and have launched a major investigation to find those
responsible.
Detective Inspector Warren Hines said: “"I believe there were two vehicles involved in this incident a
blue Mercedes and a silver VW Passat and I would ask that anyone who saw these cars in the area
around The Gardens and Hunton Road to contact me as a matter of urgency.
"The circumstances are still being investigated and I am keeping an open mind into what happened.”
A 22-year-old man who was also assaulted during the disorder was not seriously injured.

Con artist attempts to scam students in Selly Oak
A man has attempted to con a student into giving him
money on Saturday night Selly Oak.
Damon Morris, a masters student at the University of
Birmingham, was stopped by a man who was
described to be in a ‘white jacket’ around 9pm last
night (8th October).
The student claimed that the con artist had made up a
story about being on his stag night and that his ‘crew’
had left him in Birmingham tied up to a lamppost.
Damon said: “It happened yesterday evening on
Bristol Road. The bloke asked me if I knew the area to
lure me in, and made me think he was asking for
directions.
The MA student added: “He showed me a terrible ring that could never be a real engagement ring.
Looked aluminium.
“He wanted money for a bus to near Bristol so he could get married tomorrow. He tried to act ‘pally’ and
suggested he was from near my hometown.
“As soon as I started to try and leave, he asked if I respected the armed forces to try and manipulate me.
That evening Damon posted on ‘Fab N Fresh’ (a Facebook page for University of Birmingham student) to
prevent it from happening to someone.
He said: “I don’t want this to happen to somebody drunk, or someone who’s having a bad day, so I post
this online so people would be wary.”
This isn’t the first time Selly Oak has been home to scammers. Back in 2014 fake courier scams were
stealing hundreds of pounds off of vulnerable pensioners.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We are aware of the situation and at the time are
working hard to find the fraudster. We ask people living in Selly Oak and the surrounding area to be
vigilant at this time, and report anything unusual.”

Student raises over £3,500 for Help for Heroes after running fourth consecutive marathon, despite having injured knee
A student has beaten his charity fundraising target after
completing four consecutive marathons with an injured
knee.
Josh Thomson-Smith, 21, a student at University of
Birmingham, completed his fourth marathon on Sunday 15th
October, to raise money for Help for Heroes charity.
The Mechanical Engineering student had injured one of his
knees in the month leading up to the marathon and was
uncertain if he would be able to run the 10K marathon.
Josh’s mum, Lisa Thomson-Smith, 44, said: “ We didn’t know
if he [Josh] would be able to compete this year given his
injury, but he was given the all clear a week before the
marathon.”
The University of Birmingham student had completed three marathons before this year, including The
Great Birmingham Run in 2015, and The Bupa Great North Run in 2013 and 2014.
The 21-year-old ran the first 6K of the Great Birmingham Run with ease, before feeling an intense pain
in the knee that he had injured playing rugby a month before the marathon.
Josh said: “I was able to run the first 50 minutes, with ease and no pain, until I felt a sharp pain coming
from my knee. Unfortunately, I had no other choice but to jog the rest of the marathon.”
The student was raising money for the Help for Heroes charity, that was founded in 2006 by Bryn Parry
OBE and his wife Emma Parry OBE after they visited soldiers at Selly Oak Hospital (Queen Elizabeth
Hospital).
Josh said: “ I can only thank everyone that donated and supported me on Sunday. It was a great day,
despite having added more pressure to my knee and now being in immense pain, but it’s for charity and
for people who do so much for us. It’s a small token of my gratitude.”
Josh Thomson-Smith finishing his fourth marathon.

Josh’s friend and family were also proud of Josh. Sian Orchard,
40, said: “He is so thoughtless running and raising money for such
an important charity, I can only praise him for his efforts and say
that I’m proud to know him.”

Family pay tribute to son who died over the weekend
The family of a teen who died under unknown circumstances in
Erdington have paid tribute to their son.
Kaydel Williams, 19, was found dead around 8:55pm after police
and the ambulance service were called to reports of a possible hit-
and-run incident on Hunton Road on 7th October.
Despite paramedic best efforts, Kaydel was pronounced dead at
the scene.
A post-mortem has revealed that the teen died from both head and
chest injuries.
Kaydel, who was described as ‘vibrant’ by his family, was in his
final year of college.
The Williams family have paid tribute to the teenager, saying: "Kaydel was a vibrant soul and a
humorous character, who was well mannered, caring and highly regarded by others.
“He was always giving and did it with a smile. Kaydel was a loving individual with such great potential,
a beautiful soul gone too soon.
“He will be missed deeply by family and friends. Always in our hearts and thoughts, we love you.”
Detective Inspector Warren Hines, the senior investigating officer for the case, said: "Our investigations
are progressing but we still need people to come forward with information so that we can establish what
happened to Kaydel.”
Detectives are continuing the investigation to establish the cause of Kaydel’s death and how the teen
had been bundled into a car in The Garden area, 5 minutes away from where Kaydel was found.
Detective Inspector Warren Hines said: "Myself and my team are committed to finding out exactly how
Kaydel received his fatal injuries so it is imperative that people who were in the area of The Gardens
and Hunton Road come forward and tell me what they know.”

He added: "A specialist officer has been supporting Kaydel’s
family and our thoughts remain firmly with them at this
sad time."
Zanna Wade, 19, Kaydel’s friend from college said: “Kaydel,
was taken way too soon and is going to be sadly missed. He
knew so many people and was such a lovely lad - always had
a smile on his face too. I send love out to his family.”
Kaydel William’s friends have also taken to Facebook to
show their respects for the teen.
Detective Inspector Warren Hines added: "I believe that two vehicles were involved in the initial report
of disorder at ‘The Gardens’; a blue Mercedes which has been recovered and a silver VW Passat which
remains outstanding.
"I am keeping an open mind about what happened on Friday night and I am appealing directly to the
people in the cars to do the right thing and come forward.”

New Uber for doctors has launched today in Sutton Coldfield
The UK’s first ever GP visit app, described as the Uber for doctors, has been launched today in Sutton
Coldfield.
GP Delivered Quick (GPDQ) is an app that allows a patient to request a doctor from the comfort of their
own home.
The appointment, on average, lasts 25-minutes and allows for an in-depth consultation and the standard
prescription if needed, in the comfort of the patients own.
The doctor behind the app, Dr Anshumen Bhagat, describes the app as ‘innovative’ and ‘the first of its
kind’.
The North London GP said: "GPDQ is digitising the home visit - it really is that simple.”
Dr Bhagat added: “Patients benefit from speed and flexibility, with the ability to see a doctor when and
where it suits them, booking and tracking their GP through their smartphone.
“The feedback from both our patients and our doctors in London has been fantastic.
“The app, which is being rolled out across Birmingham from today, first launched in London last
December, with "great success".
Now that the app has become a success in London, Dr Bhagat feels that it’s the right time to add more
locations within the UK starting with Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and surrounding areas.
The app allows you to book a GP and receive live updates as to where the GP is and the estimated time
of arrival - just like the ‘Uber’ app.
Prices start at £120 on weekdays and £150 on the weekends.
Jayne Barker, 42, from Sutton Coldfield, said: “I do think this is a great app, but for the rich- how is
anyone from my area meant to be able to afford a visit from the doctors starting at £120. If the app
lowers the price I will use, but until then I just don’t have the money.”
Dr Pattni, from The Manor Practice in Sutton Coldfield told me: “The idea is one of a kind, and it will
alleviate some of the pressure that local GP’s and NHS hospitals currently have. However, this app is
-
12
more for those who have high earning, which means it won’t appeal to a mass market here in Sutton
Coldfield.”
The founder of the app Dr Bhagat describes the app as ‘another option for patients who want to see a
doctor when it suits them’.

A crackdown is underway after prolific beggars refuse help in Birmingham city centre
Six beggars have been banned from the streets in Birmingham’s city centres after refusing to accept help
in a bid to stop them sleeping rough.
All six men have been given criminal behaviour orders (CBOs) after reports of them pestering passer-
byers for cash and acting in a drunk and disorderly way.
Two men, aged between 24 and 42 have been banned from begging anywhere in England and Wales,
while the other four men, aged 32 and 37 have been banned from begging in Birmingham City.
PC Lee Howard, from Birmingham’s West Midlands Police, said: “We continue to provide help to beggars
who may be homeless or battling addiction, with the assistance of local support groups.
The officer added: “[We are working closely] with housing and care provider Midland Heart and
Birmingham City Council, as well as the charity Change Grow Live, which can help break the cycle of
drug and alcohol addiction.
Some of the men have additionally been given ‘positive prohibitions’ added to their criminal behaviour
orders to ensure that they are taking the necessary steps to getting the help and support they need.
‘Positive prohibitions’ includes a requirement of attending drug misuse and alcohol awareness course.
PC Howard said: “We also ensure that as part of Criminal Behaviour Orders there are positive
prohibitions where appropriate so that the most vulnerable people get the help and support they need."
In some cases, stricter conditions have to be enforced in order to prevent intimidation to the general
public and for the safety of the beggars too.
Statistics show that over 3,560 people were sleeping rough at any one time this year (published result
from this February). Homeless Link estimates this to of increased 102% since 2010, which suggests the
issue is not being resolved.
Change Grow Live (CGL), the charity that the West Midlands Police are working closely with to combat
drug and alcohol addiction amongst homeless people; have released figures that suggest more that
13,000 people beat addiction with the help of CGL in the last year.
Chief Executive of CGL, David Biddle added: “We have the vision, the passion, the appetite and scale to
extend the services we offer and to make a bigger impact in society, and that’s what we are going to do.”

CGL aims to reach as many individual suffering with alcohol and drug misuse in Birmingham and
increase health and wellbeing.

Warning to motorists after rise in reports of lit fireworks being thrown at moving vehicles
Motorists are being asked to be vigilant in the coming weeks after a rise in reports of lit fireworks being
thrown at moving vehicles.
West Midlands Police have confirmed a spike in complaints from residents in the Selly Oak area,
reporting that they had seen lit fireworks being thrown towards cars on Saturday evening (29th October
2016).
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman has confirmed today (30th October 2016), that the offenders had
left the location, where they had been reported to be, before the police arrived.
The police have also received reports in the Woeley Castle area of a similar incident. A firework was
allegedly thrown into a moving vehicle. West Midlands Police can confirm that no one was injured.
More reports of lit fireworks being thrown at and from vehicles have been reported in the Northfield,
Kings Norton and the Lifford areas.
Lee Baker, the station commander at Woodgate and Bournbrook community fire stations, said: “West
Midlands Fire Service always advises sensible & safe use of fireworks. We see an increase in anti-social
behaviour & injuries resulting from misuse around this time of year.”
Many resident living in the effected areas have already voiced their opinion on the problem. Wendy
Stafford, 42, said: “The morons have already started then. The mentality of people these days in
Northfield is shocking.”
Stafford isn’t the only aggravated resident, Mandy Baldwin, 45, said: “ I love fireworks, I really do, but
now they are being turned into weapons and used on people. If not regulated there will be more
incidents.”
Baker also adds: “Reports of fireworks being targeted at moving vehicles increases the danger of serious
injury. This impacts on all communities, young & old alike.”
West Midlands Fire Service have asked firework users to be considerate of others and have warned that
inappropriate sale and use of fireworks can lead to legal action against the offenders.
Brigid Jones, Labour councillor for the Selly Oak constituency, commented saying: “Anyone who sees
this type of anti-social behaviour must report it to the authorities immediately so that we can find the
culprits. At this time, West Midland Police are doing all that they can to make sure sellers of fireworks
are complying with the law, and that no one gets hurt.”
