Runner’sGuide

Your run number and attached timing chipPlease check that your run number is identical to the master number on your covering letter. If it is different please contact the Morrisons Great Manchester Run team at [email protected]. This is your unique number and only you must wear it on the day. DO NOT swap, change or copy this number. Swapping numbers can be dangerous, by selling it onto someone else who may not be properly prepared for the event you could be putting their health at risk.

In order to simplify your running experience we have brought in race number timing chips for 2015. These are already attached to the back of your run number so eliminate the need for attaching and removing chips on your trainer or ankle. Please DO NOT remove this from the Run number as doing so will prevent you getting an accurate time for your run. You don’t need to do anything to activate this chip, just leave it attached and it will automatically scan when you cross the start and finish lines to give you your finishing time.

The colour of your run numberThere are five coloured waves with different start times to ensure that there is enough space for everyone within the start area. You have been allocated to one of these coloured waves based on the estimated running time you gave us on your entry form. Those with faster estimated times will be in the earlier waves and those with slower estimated times in the later waves.

The section on ‘The Start’ on page 39 explains more about your arrival at the start line and what to expect. Fasten your number securely to the front of your vest or t-shirt using four safety pins, one at each corner. It is your responsibility to arrive at the finish with your number intact as you’ll need it to claim your Finishers Pack and for your accurate run time.

Run Number FAQsMy friend/running partner is in a different wave, how can I run with them?Runners can move to a wave with a LATER start time without changing their number; for instance Orange numbers are allowed to join the White wave but White numbers will NOT be allowed to join the Orange wave.

Can I move to an earlier wave?If you feel you should be in an earlier and faster wave, and can prove it with a recent run result, please contact the Morrisons Great Manchester Run team at [email protected].

What if I have a Yellow and White striped number? As well as Orange, White, Blue, Green and Pink waves there will be

some runners in Yellow and White striped numbers who are fast paced club runners. We ask those with Yellow and White striped numbers to use the Orange baggage buses, assembly routes and family reunion area, and assemble close to the start line in the area marked with Yellow and White ‘Fast Paced Runners’ signs.

Getting to the RunTravel and parkingPlease allow yourself plenty of time to get to the start on the morning of the run, and take the time to look at a map and work out your route in advance if you are unfamiliar with the city. Manchester has an excellent public transport system with its internal network of trams and buses, so please consider these options wherever possible.

When to arriveYou’ll be more relaxed if you allow for time to get parked or walk in from your train, tram or bus stop. This will give you time to stretch, use the baggage drop if you want to and take a good look around. There is a lot of waiting space in Princess Street and Albert Square and don’t forget there are big screens outside Manchester Central and within Spinningfields. Remember that the other waves will need time to clear the start area before your assembly opens.

MetrolinkThere will be an enhanced Metrolink service on the day, and trams will run every 12 minutes between 09:30 and 17:00, and every 15 minutes outside of this. The first service runs from Altrincham at 06:53, from Eccles at 07:30, from Bury at 06:49, from East Didsbury at 06:52, from Ashton-U-Lyne

Travelling by carIf you do decide to travel by car please take note of the road closures on the map below before travelling. Most are to the south of the city between Manchester city centre and Old Trafford so if you come in via the north, east or west you can avoid many of these. Please follow these three points if you do decide to travel by car:

1. If you don’t know the city, plan your journey in advance of run day; the map below highlights the main city centre closures but please check greatrun.org for the full road closure list if required.

2. Do not assume you can use your normal routes into the city centre. Please DO NOT rely on satnav devices as these could take you along routes which are closed for the event.

Please be aware that we work very hard with Manchester CityCouncil to provide as much car parking and parking advice aspossible. Unfortunately, anyone who does park illegally may end up with a parking ticket, or even with their car being towed away, so please only park in recognised car parks or use on street parking.

3. Give yourself plenty of travel time on event morning, there will be many other runners coming into the city, so the roads will be busier than an average Sunday morning.

Parking your carThe Morrisons Great Manchester Run starts and finishes in the city centre and there are plenty of car parks to choose from. See the map below for a list of suggested car parks. Please also study the start layouts on pages 38-39 which show where you need to assemble based on the colour of your run number and the best routes of access. Please use this to work out the best way to walk to the start once you’ve parked up or arrived in the city centre. The areas closest to the start and finish are going to be very busy so you could consider parking a little further away and walking in to the start to get those legs moving!

Cycling in ManchesterManchester City Council has invested heavily in facilities to make cycling in Manchester City Centre easier and safer. As such, cycling to the Morrisons Great Manchester Run is certainly a

possibility for those living in and around Manchester city centre. For details of cycle routes, roads with cycling facilities and cycle parks visit www.manchester.gov.uk or www.cycling.tfgm.com.

Great CityGames ManchesterAs well as the Morrisons Great Manchester Run, the city will also be hosting the Great CityGames for the sixth time this year (see page 10). This exciting and innovative event, which hosts international athletics

stars at a purpose-built city centre arena, will take place on Saturday 9 May. Track events will be held on the section of Deansgate from Peter Street to John Dalton Street, as well as a long jump and pole vault competition in Albert Square. Find out more at www.greatcitygames.org

Staying in Manchester? If you want to find out more information about accommodation, eating out and other attractions in Manchester please call the Manchester Visitor Information Centre on 0871 222 8223, or visit www.visitmanchester.com

Run FacilitiesInformation DeskLocated at Manchester Central (follow the signage from the Windmill Street entrance behind the Radisson Hotel), the Information Desk is open from 12:00 to 17:00 on Saturday 9 May and at 08:30 on Sunday 10 May. Please note that one hour before the start is not the time to solve entry, run number or timing chip problems. For such issues please visit our FAQ section at greatrun.org or email the Morrisons Great Manchester Run team at [email protected] in advance.

BaggageWe recommend you arrive in the city changed and ready to run as there are no changing facilities available. If you need to bring any baggage with you this could be left 1) locked out of sight in your car 2) with any friends who are meeting you at the finish or 3) within the baggage storage areas arranged for each coloured wave. Baggage areas can get very busy so if you are looking for a quick getaway after your run please use options 1 or 2 if possible. There are two different baggage areas, one for the Orange and Green waves and one for the Blue, White and Pink waves.

Orange and Green waves can use the baggage buses parked beyond the finish on Hardman Street at Spinningfields. These are open from 09:30 on the day, close to the live

music stage in Spinningfields. The baggage buses will not move: they are positioned near to the finish so if you

want to use them please drop off your bag in good time and make your way to the start. The baggage buses will be divided by run numbers as detailed below. All buses will be clearly marked with signs, and the security staff on each bus will have numbered stamps that they can mark your hand with to help you remember which bus you used.

Blue, White and Pink waves can use the baggage room in Manchester Central, next to the Charity Village. This opens from 09:30 and will be signposted from the Charter Foyer entrance on Windmill Street. The baggage room will have A-Z signs around the room so please leave your bag in the area relating to the first letter of your surname.

If you are depositing bags in either of the baggage stores please do so early to allow you plenty of time to walk up to the start line, which is at least a 10-minute walk away. All baggage facilities will close at 16:00 so please collect all belongings before then. You will need to display your number to the security team to gain access. Please do not leave any valuables – organisers cannot accept any responsibility for the security of these items.

ToiletsTemporary event toilets are available near the start on a number of city streets and in Albert Square – see the maps below for details. There are also permanent public toilets near the Town Hall on Lloyd Street, within Great Northern and inside the Manchester Central Charity Village. Near the finish there are temporary toilets on a number of the side streets off Deansgate. Those near the start are always very busy: we provide hundreds of toilets but try not to wait until the last minute to go. Please note that Manchester city centre has an excellent CCTV system so use the proper toilets provided!

The StartAssembling at the startLook at the back of your run number and you’ll see a reminder listing your arrival and start times. We strongly advise that you arrive early, soak up the atmosphere, stretch those muscles and join in the pre-run warm-up. If you’re early, rather than heading straight to the start, why not visit the Charity Village in Manchester Central?

The start show will be hosted by Great Run regulars Bryan Burnett and Kris Temple. As well as playing great music and hosting a number of special guests they will keep you informed and let you know when assembly is open for your wave.

The maps below show the suggested route that you should use to approach the start area, just follow the coloured arrows on the map for your wave.

Coloured balloon arches will mark the front of each assembly area and marshals will be there to direct you. The start area will be busy but if you follow the colour coded routes and assemble at the times we’ve suggested it should mean that you don’t have to push against the flow.

Please note that there are tram lines in the city near to the start area: thousands of pedestrians walk across these each day so they are perfectly safe but do watch your feet and look both ways before crossing.

Assisted wheelchair entrantsThose taking part in assisted wheelchairs are asked to line up towards the rear of the assembly area relevant to their coloured wave start.

Warm-upThere will be three warm-ups on the day, led by our Great Run fitness guru, Roy Gayle, and Manchester’s own Christina Waring. These will take place in the assembly area, with one at 11:25 for the Orange and White waves, a second at 12:15 for the Blue wave and one at 13:00 for the Green and Pink

waves. Roy and Christina will stay on the stage to give last minute tips and a friendly wave to all you runners as you make your way to the start line.

The CourseThe Morrisons Great Manchester Run features a 10km course which has been officially measured and certified. The start line is on Portland Street near the junction with Oxford Street. Each kilometre will be accurately marked by large signs at the side of the road.

The police and local authorities are very supportive, but please note

that we do have to re-open the roads quickly after the event: if you are still on the course after 15:30 you may find that stewards ask you to finish the run on the footpaths, and we ask that you comply with this instruction.

If you need further assistance, the course team will be on hand to help get you back to the finish. The finish system will remain in operation until all runners have crossed the line on Deansgate so all runners will receive their time and Finishers Pack.

Look out for …If it’s a run with a view you’re looking for, some of the highlights of the course include Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, the award-winning Imperial War Museum and The Lowry.

There is also the exciting moment when you pass the famous cobbles of Coronation Street’s new set. Perhaps the most significant landmark though will be Beetham Tower, the 47-storey skyscraper which almost marks the finish line for you!

What if I need to walk? The Morrisons Great Manchester Run is for everyone, and we acknowledge that some people may need to walk for some or all of the distance. If you think this might apply to you please don’t start in the Orange or White wave, assemble at the back of the wave you are in. Out of courtesy for those around you if you do need to walk please keep to the LEFT of the road to allow runners to pass on your right. This helps those around you get past – you may well be running past them shortly after!

Bands on the Run and Charity Cheering PointsThe course is jam-packed with music and cheering points to offer encouragement and entertainment. The programme for 2015 will feature a number of bands and DJs playing everything from opera to rock and roll.

Hipswing Entertainments present The Fraudsters, an indie covers entertainment phenomenon. Anyone who loves the great rock, alternative and indie bands of the last five decades will love their live performance. They said: “We’ve always wanted to entertain the runners of Manchester and we can’t wait to spur them on with some of our up-beat classics.”

Another highlight will be The Blame, one of Manchester’s finest rock and pop covers bands, playing all over the country at many prestigious events. With a set list full of massive hits the four-piece are looking forward to keeping spirits high on the day.

Clint Boon’s famous ‘Boon Army’ stage will be stationed at 5.5km playing Manchester classics and anything upbeat. We’ll have two ‘walls of sound’ for you, one at 6km near Trafford Quays and one outside Key 103 radio station after 9km, featuring

Key 103’s specially chosen Morrisons Great Manchester Run playlist to drive you along.

If this isn’t enough then the Manchester Evening News Go Zone at 8.5km offers even more music, encouragement and a jelly baby or two for that extra lift!

There are three Charity Cheering Points on the course where supporters of Cancer Research UK will be cheering you on as you pass them at around 1km and then at about 9.5km. At 4km and 7km you’ll see supporters from The Christie and the

Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital will be hosting a third cheering point which you will pass at around 3km and 7.5km.

The entertainment continues when you have finished with Run supporters Manchester Aid to Kosovo hosting the Oast House stage in Spinningfields with sets by Manchester-based Clockwork Radio, acoustic folk duo Finch and the Moon and singer/songwriter Janileigh Cohen, plus DJ sets throughout the afternoon. The stage opens at 11am.

Aqua Pura water and Lucozade Sport LITEAqua Pura water will be available before the run from water points at the north end of Albert Square and on Portland Street near the Portland Tower.

On the 2015 course there will be two Aqua Pura water stations, one at 5km and another just after 7km. Water is available on each side of the road so if you would like to take a bottle, there is no need to rush for the first table you see. We ask that when you do take a bottle of water you don’t drop it on the course with the lid still on. Think of the runners behind you and keep your

bottle with you or throw it carefully on the verge.Remember water is there to drink, not pour over your head, if you’re looking to cool off run through the shower at 6.5km.

Aqua Pura water will also be given out when you cross the finish line on Deansgate, as well as Lucozade Sport LITE inside your Finishers Pack. If it’s a hot day or if you think you might need more than this, then please bring extra water or sports drinks with you.

The most important thing to remember is to drink as much or as little as you do in your training. Hydration is important, but this is a 10k not a marathon. Just because water is available, don’t feel you need to take it. By this point in your training you should know what works for you.

The FinishThe Morrisons Great Manchester Run will finish on Deansgate near the Hilton Hotel and Beetham Tower. After you cross the finish line, marshals will direct you to the Aqua Pura water and Finishers Pack stations. There will be thousands of runners finishing after you so please keep moving along until you have exited the system.

Your Finishers Pack contains your exclusive T-shirt and medal. These packs are for finishers only so please don’t take more than one. The runner-

only finish system ends at the junction of Deansgate and Peter Street. This area must be kept clear to allow runners to exit, so we ask spectators to use the family re-union areas and runners who have finished to not block the gates out of the finish area.

Collecting your baggage and meeting upBeyond this point, runners from different waves will be directed to different zones to collect their baggage (see baggage on page 38) and to meet up with friends and family at the reunion area – see the start/finish layout on pages 38 and 39 for details.

As runners arrive at the end of the finish system each wave of runners will be directed as follows:

Orange and Green waves will be turned left towards Hardman Street to their baggage buses and family reunion in Spinningfields.

White, Blue and Pink waves will be turned right onto Peter Street for their family reunion area and baggage drop within the Charity Village at Manchester Central.

At your reunion point, you should aim to meet under the board that matches the first letter of the runner’s surname. Please bear in mind that the city centre will be very busy so you will need to agree any meeting points in advance – it won’t be possible for everyone to say: “I’ll see you at the finish line!” If you are not using the reunion areas you could also use the car park you are using, the train station you came into, a shop or café, or one of the landmarks in Manchester such as the Town Hall. If you’re linked to one of the official charities, why not arrange to meet up at the Manchester Central Charity Village?

The Manchester Central Charity VillageA number of the official charities will have meet and greet stands in Manchester Central (see map on page 38) on the day. This will be open from 09:30 until 17:00 to welcome home charity runners. Contact your charity to find out if they will be there. Please note that in 2015 the entrance will be via the Charter Foyer, not the main entrance.

This is on the Windmill Street (Radisson Hotel) side of the building.

The charity village is open to all runners, not just those running for a specific cause. Here you will find charity stalls and more information about future Great Run events. If you’re looking for some extra help with your recovery, head to the Massage Zone.

Warm-downSpinningfields will be hosting the warm-

down party from the Oast House at The Avenue Courtyard, with stretching led by Roy Gayle, live bands hosted on the Manchester Aid to Kosovo stage, food and drink offers, and more.

Advice from the medical teamNorth West Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance will be at the start, along the course, at the finish on Deansgate, around the family reunion areas and in front of the Charity Village – if you need attention look out for the green banners that will mark the medical posts.

Our medical response team will include doctors, nurses, paramedics and first aiders. If you do require treatment during the run and they think it’s unwise for you to carry on, they will suggest you retire from the event and, although nobody can be forced to stop,

it is strongly recommended that you heed the medics’ advice.

Weather awarenessPlan what to wear after checking the forecasted weather. If it’s cold you could wear an old training top or a bin bag over your running vest to keep warm at the start, but please note that if you leave any clothing it will be cleared up and recycled by the cleansing team. To check the weather in advance of the day you could use www.bbc.co.uk/weather or www.metoffice.gov.uk

Advice for spectatorsThe startThe start area will be busy but spectators can still watch. All we ask is that you stay off the course and behind the barriers. Some parts of the assembly area are for runners only –

The Great Northern is the perfect place to finish up after the Morrisons Great Manchester Run. Why not grab a well earned drink and bite to eat at our fantastic outlets on the square, or step inside and find a place to relax in one

of our welcoming restaurants or cafes? And with even more luxury leisure and entertainment facilities, homeware and design stores to discover, there has never been a better time to spend the day at the Great Northern.Recycling

At Great Run we recycle wherever possible, and ask our runners to help where they can. Why not take your water bottle home from the day and re-fill and re-use it next time you go running? If you are going to throw it away, please don’t drop it on the ground, look out for one of the recycling bins in the city.

any areas with restricted access will be well signed and marshals will show you where you can stand.

The courseFor a good vantage point to watch your friends and family you could choose Chepstow Street, Great Bridgewater Street or Albion Street near Deansgate Locks. If you want to get a look at the runners in action, why not head out to the halfway area near the Imperial War Museum North and Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground? You can walk over to both of these locations from Salford Quays, which is served by the Eccles Metrolink line and offers good car parks with great shopping and leisure facilities.

Out on the course, please be aware that only those roads used for the run will be closed to traffic so stay on the footpath at all times for your own safety. When crossing the course please do so with caution, and only when the road is not in use by the runners.

The finishThe finish area on Deansgate is open to spectators, but viewing at the finish line itself is limited. A good place to watch runners head out and back is along Chester Road and Bridgewater Viaduct south of the finish. If you do watch from Deansgate please stand behind the barriers and off the roadway at all times.

In the event that viewing areas on Deansgate become full, the marshals will close off access to this area. You can also wait for runners at the relevant family reunion areas in Spinningfields beyond the Peter Street/Quay Street junction (for runners in the Orange and Green waves) and on Peter Street (for runners in the Blue, White and Pink waves).
