Under the agreement, the broadcasters admit no wrongdoing. While the settlement is still subject to approval, a number of individuals and news organizations have weighed-in with their thoughts on the settlement: Future of Music Coalition Executive Dir. Jenny Toomey: “What was once an aberration [payola] became standard industry practice when radio was consolidated. We’re encouraged to see the FCC and the broadcast industry work together to eliminate a practice which undermines the meritocracy that should be the public airwaves.” IvoryTowerz Editor (ivorytowerz.blogspot.com) and American University Professor/Journalism & Communication Rick Rockwell: “What the cold language in the settlements and the business pages...doesn’t tell you is the real crime. These are the companies that killed music radio. This is the answer to why so much junk gets played on the airwaves. But folks mostly don’t care today, unlike the 1950s and 1960s. At that time, radio... was still a strong presence in American homes. Today, folks have moved away from the polluted pool of radio to their iPods, computers, and other sources for music.” (continued on page 6) Jennings Named WGAR PD KZKX/Lincoln, NE PD Brian Jennings has been named PD for Clear Channel sister WGAR/Cleveland, effective April 2. “I’m very proud of KZKX and its decades of leadership in the format,” Jennings says. “WGAR also has the same legendary legacy. I can’t wait to be a part of this killer team.” Jennings’ hire fills the position vacated in October with Meg Stevens’ move to program Clear Channel’s WMZQ/Washington and WPOC/Baltimore. Clear Channel recently announced plans to sell KZKX to Three Eagles of Lincoln as part of its broader initiative to sell hundreds of stations. Lofton Creek Taps Redmond As VP Label and radio vet Joe Redmond has been named VP/Promotion for Lofton Creek, effective Friday (3/16). Redmond’s previous stops include a short run with Cupit Records, three years with Warner Bros. and hitches with Marco Promotion, Imprint and Young-Olsen. Reach him at [email protected]; cell 615- 414-5488. Radio News Programming: KNTY/Sacramento is currently seeking a PD to replace Rick Stewart. Send resumes to GM Larry Lemanski at [email protected]. In addition to PD/afternoon duties at KRYS/Corpus Christi, Big Frank Edwards has taken on PD duties at sister station News/Talk KKTX-AM. KRYS morning co-host Chris O’Brien is now MD.
