Making Architectural Form with Italo Calvino Pedro Jacobo Instructor: Carol Burhmann

description

The idea behind this public assembly building is a lot like TheHub signature in San Francisco, California. It was designed to fit the needs of various kinds of performing arts. The location of the theater is 939 Mission Street with two performance spaces, a theater and a lecture hall. They showcase a new kind of relationship among the performing arts for collaborative performances. The building features a facility for organizations that support innovative programs for San Francisco's homeless population. This is an innovative building solution that extends the arts West down Mission Street and especially one that showcases the mission of the arts and HUB to the urban public.

In the novel Invisible Cities the Italian writer Italy Calvino describes the city of Zaira as a sponge, soaking up memories. The narrative starts with Marco Polo, a messenger who has visited the city and attempts to describe it to the emperor Kublai Khan. Marco Polo begins by describing the city by its objective properties, “I could tell you how many steps make up the streets rising like stairways and the degree of the arcades’ curves, and what kind of zinc scales cover the roofs; but I know this would be the same as telling you nothing.” The city can’t be defined by these objective properties, but by the experiences and connections people make with these objects. The connections that people make with the city of Zaira are seen as physical and psychological. This is what gives the city substance. The city of Zaira is “a sponge soaking up memo-ries,” and these memories have been categorized as physical because they physically change the city like “the bomb that destroys the guttering.” There are also psychological changes that change the city like “the queen’s nuptial procession.” The wedding takes place in a setting in the city and people define the space differently. The city of Zaira is an objec-tive property defined as space and volume. It is only when there are personal connections with inhabit-ants that the city starts get its name.
